Super Cub preview

mike_cyul

SOH-CM-2025
As promised in the "Aircraft I would like to see" thread, I've posted a couple of W.I.P. shots of the Super Cub. Not too much to see at this point, it's early days, but it'll give you an idea, plus it'll tell you the versions planned. I'll put more shots up as work progresses.

You can see the panel if you squint at my sig, here below. :)

Really looking forward to this one - the pics look great on your preview site :applause:

Love to see a 180HP version :jump:

For this one pictured, you'll have to settle for 160hp. :)

Most Super Cub pilots seem to think that any more is a waste of money and on top of that you have to carry the extra weight. In one DVD I have, there's a Super Cub with 240hp, and the pilot confesses that it doesn't cruise any faster than a regular Super Cub. I don't think climb is that much better either, once the Borer 82 inch prop is installed (as it is on the one pictured).

Fantastic.
I have been waiting for one of these for ever....
I am an Alaskan (lifer) and as you can imagine, these are very important and much used here.
Thank you for the "sneak"

Mike what is the difference from the Super and the Special Cub?

The Cub Special (not Special Cub) is a PA-11, while the Super Cub is a PA-18.

The PA-11 was essentially a basic J-3 Cub, but with a 95 hp engine (Cubs had 65hp), streamlined 'pressure' cowlings for the engine, thinner struts, and had slightly better instruments (but not by much) which also involved making a new panel on the port cockpit wall to house the magneto and carb and cabin heat sliders. There was also a new metal cover for the throttles, and the cockpit walls were no longer fabric but metal sheets.

The first generation Super Cubs were basically Cub Specials, but with a new and slightly wider fuselage. As the Super Cub developed, it was given progressively more powerful engines (130hp, then 150/160hp), and flaps. The wing was substantially re-designed for the flaps. The rudder and stabiliser/elevators were also re-designed, the elevators now being mass balanced.

That's a rough overview. :)
