Swedish P-51D-5-NA ??

The site you mention was right. I did some digging and came with a few more pics:

the two aircraft, Mary Ann and Peabody's pet right after landing in Sweden

Mary Ann after it was flown to Barkaby near Stockholm by the US military attache in Sweden ( Col Hardison, note name on the side of the aircraft)

2011-12-2909-32-19_0126.jpg

The four flyable and interned Mustangs in Sweden in the autumn of 1944: 43-6461 CS-Q "Hot Pants", 43-6365 GQ-J "Z-Hub", 44-13345 C5-I bar "Mary Ann" and 44-13917 D7-L "You've Had it". All four would later be bought by Sweden and enter service in the Swedish Air Force, as 26002, 26001, 26003 and 26004 respectively.

2011-12-2909-33-40_0127.jpg

26003 kept its camouflage paint as can be seen from this pic, and it was also the only D in the Swedish Air Force without a fin fillet.
It flew with F16, carrying the registration white B at first, followed by white A and back to white B again. It was written off after a ground collision in 1946 and then used as an instructional airframe.

Hope this helps?

Jan,

You are a master...really...
Okay, good leg-work! Very interesting. I'll have to dig in a little deeper now, I'm going to tackle both schemes of 44-13345, makes a good story to boot. Pretty unique being a fillet-less Swede D, purdy too.

The other -5 is curious to me also, it looks like after service as 26004, it was sold to the Dominican Republic. Would be interesting to find some more photos of that one also.

Thanks a lot!

Joseph

Imagine a Mustang in Swedish "splinter type" camo, with full Swedish insignia in the style of the one above? I would look awesome I think!:salute:

OK, 44-13917 D7-L "You've Had it", of the 503rd FS, 339th FG, flown by Lt Franklin D. Talcott landed at Bulltofta on 6 august 1944. He had suffered an oil leak after being hit by flak.
Intertingly, the pilot was observed wearing anti-G trousers, something new for the Swedish Air Force. After reparations, the aircraft was transferred to Barkaby on 7 oktober 1944.
Lt Talcott unfortunately died that same day, while test flying another interned Mustang, P-51B 43-12463 CS-N "Some Joke" at Ljungbyhed.

I found more pic, but this a bit of a mystery:

2011-12-3007-41-43_0132.jpg

You see the name on the nose, and the checkers that seem to correspond to a 339th aircraft. You even see the place where the cartoon on the nose seems to be painted over.
The rest of the aircraft is all wrong though. It has a black triangle on the tail, and overpainted buzz marks that could be KI-T below the wing, that would point to the 55th FS/20th FG. But why does it not have the piano key markings? The caption says the pic was taken at Bromma in 1947, which would mean the aircraft was part of one of the later batches of P-51's delivered to Sweden. My list of Swedish Mustangs mentions only two former 55th FS Mustangs, 44-72390 (which I believe is still around), and 44-72388 KI-A "Bobby".
It will probably remain a mystery....

I have plans to do a few Swedish Mustangs myself, complete with all the swedish stencils, but that will take a while to finish still...

Jan,

Thanks! A few photos I didn't have, the "mystery" mustang is a puzzle. I don't think it's 44-13917..

The faded cartoon on the nose is not in the name place in relation to that cowling panel, as on "You've had it"

The checkers on the mystery ship extend thicker, and past the exhaust opening in the cowling...farther than the original bird.

No hint of D-day stripes having been removed on the mystery 'stang.

Also notice, no holes in the cooling vents, on any shots. (solid panels installed) on 44-13917... They were usually installed for cold-weather... But in the photo of the mystery ship, it has the vented piece installed...AFTER being in cold Sweden?

My guess is that it's a different 'stang, but that for some reason at one point, was painted in similar markings.... This is interesting!

Awesome photos, Jan Kees!

I particularly am impressed by that wonderful cockpit photo! It isn't of a P-51D-5-NA, but rather an early-model P-51D-20-NA (that has been field-modified with the installation of a K-14 gun sight, controls, and throttle (where as it would have originally rolled off the assembly line with an N-9 gun sight and the original ball-grip throttle)). The serial number on the panel looks like 44-64112, which is an early model P-51D-20-NA, and that very aircraft still flies today (quite amazing)! http://www.mustangsmustangs.com/p-51/p51survivors/pages/44-64122.shtml

Interesting, that bit about the cockpit. The picture is from a swedish book on american aircraft that ended up in Sweden during the war, and it is with the item on 44-13917, so I assumed...

As for 44-64112, my data tell me nothing on its start in life, but it came to Sweden probably in march 1947, flew as 26130 with F4, F16 and F21, was converted to a recce aircraft (S26) and was sold to Nicaragua in 1954..

Very informative and dang interesting , the Swedish being obviously impressed with the 51 to buy after the end off the war , I'll check and see if can match the aircraft and any further valiant information here . :salute:

It's amazing how much knowledge you can take in on these Warbirds, thanks to a little enthusiasm, and FSX!

I figured that cockpit for a -20 also, and am still puzzled by the "mystery" mustang...

Here's a few more of 44-13917

And I believe this is her serving for the Dominican Republic, as FAD-1900(1) - not to be confused with a second FAD-1900 which served a couple years later. (However, that doesn't look like the cuffed Hamilton Standard prop, maybe a later model Hamilton?)

OK, I couldn't resist doing a Swedish Mustang myself of course, so here are my first WiP shots of 26108 Blue F "Essie May II" of F16.
I choose this one because of the fun squadron badge and the name, though it seems these did not last very long.
26108 was originally 44-63833 E6-V of the 402nd FS/370 th FG. She went to Israel in 1952, and was scrapped there.

Still very much WiP, I removed all the US stencils and replaced them with the proper swedish ones, but it seems I forgot a few, still looking at that. The roundel on the wings is cut off by the ailerons, so I'll need to work on that too, as well as on F below the nose, and the spinner of course. Still, it looks Swedish already, don't you think?

Looking good Jan!

Will have to be a stable mate!

I'm almost ready to post some screens of "Mary Ann", trying to get her done before moving on in her career.

First WIP shots of "Mary Ann" 44-13345

Good-day,
Okay, first few screens from 44-13345, still playing with a few details. Borrowing John's wing skin from "Frenesi", close enough... conceived a little different Olive Drab for the fuselage, with some extra little nuggets. Should probably get her dirty, but I hate to do it, she's too purdy! Anybody know if there was any kill markings, or if Lt. Burtner's name appeared on the aircraft?

Looks really good, Joseph!

I don't think it had any name or kill marks, just look at the pics higher up.

Meanwhile, my swede progresses slowly as well:

FX14711.jpg

I found a pic of 26108, without a big "F" below the nose, so I left it out, and it showed the walkways continuing below the wings.

Some details, note the swedish stencils, the older model walkways (on both wings) and the yellow fuel caps:
FX14710.jpg

I'm still not 100% happy with the roundels on the wings, so I will a bit more on those, but I'm getting there...
And I don't think there is a model with the 70 gal tanks, no mirror and without the tail warning radar, is there?

Now that is amazing!

Thanks for the historylesson.:salute:
The swedish airforce was quite a mix and match fleet of different aircraft in the beginning.

OK, I think I've got those roundels right this time.
here's a few pics from the other side, personally, I think those Swedish colors look great on the Mustang.
