Taz's New Project

Building a VC

To build a VC is frankly the most taxing part of the whole modeling process, imo. I had the good fortune to see some good pictures of projects when I was starting, so in the hope it helps here are some from my Tempest II project.

The aircraft model is built, it has wings, undercarriage, weapons etc but the cockpit is only a hole under the canopy.

Form a cockpit shell as per Milton's C162 tutorial: this places the thing accurately and to the scale required. I've hidden the canopy meantime so it's not in the way.

Build some "furniture" for this cockpit model, but since this is what's seen in external views in the sim, there's no need to pile on the details - they won't be seen.

Now clone this part of the model, this will be the basis of the VC. Build as much detail into this second cockpit model as you please, as long as you don't reduce CFS3 to a stuttering wreck!

You now have a model with an exterior (fuselage, wings, gear etc), an external cockpit seen in external views in the sim and a detailed cockpit which is only seen in VC mode. The external cockpit is linked to cockpit and the VC is linked to cockpit_virtual0, itself linked to cockpits in the Gmax model.

The eyepoint, linked to cockpit_virtual0 is placed where the pilot's eyepoint is likely to be in the VC part of the model.

Eventually Gmax gets rather sluggish while working with a complex model, so what we tend to do is save the VC as a separate model and work on that in isolation. Before exporting to CFS3, this separate model must be merged back into the main model.

Hope this helps

Thanks

been fighting with it after CFS3 gave me a mission fail error did a fresh install and for some reason things are working still alittle grey on the cockpit but getting a better idea of how it works I did learn the cockpit has to painted with the main model template but the VC can have its own template.got it to work in red but had double everything solved that problem and that is when I learned the inner cockpit has to be painted with the red_t so i am in the process of reworking that now.

Thanks for the help.

Small update

Tom, just when are you going to finish that bloomin' Tempest? :icon_lol: It's looking VERY neat indeed btw!!

Not quite true Taz, you can have multiple texture sheets for any part of the model VC or external. You can also have parts of the model mapped to different sheets. ie if you had a cube you could have 6 different textures, 1 for each face. You don't have to use the naming conventions either, apart from the specular (I think).

?¿?¿?¿

will i tried that and cockpit in the game is grey and it dose not find the texture so i am lost there the vc paint shows up in vc view but the model cockpit is grey no paint at all. so if you can explain this in more detail i am all ears. cause gmax only has 1 map slot not like 3dsmax has more.

You were right figured it out what you think VC coming next.

If the model is textured in gmax but grey in game then either the .dds is not in cfs3 or is named differently from the gmax texture.

I give up

I try and i and i try and nothing makes since in this game now i have two cockpits and junk for a vc cocpit before i could see like i was looking out the plane think it is time to throw the towel in i know when i am beat sorry guys but if i cannot get a cocckpit to work there is no reason in messing with something i don't even play sorry another modeler has left the building.

update after taking my meds and calming down for some reason CFS3 dose not like cockpiit_virtual0 1 to many i's got it working everything is fine except have tweak a few things then it will be released in the freeware section at my site and if you register there please use your name here cause i have been getting hit with alot of spam and silly users name so i just delete them. big 4 members over there. thanks for the help.

Love the pit.:medals: What was that about "precocious talent"?

Hope you can stay the distance, your speed and output is truly impressive :applause::applause:

I like the gauge graphics, good when something starts working as advertised!

If you'd like to help with mapping this 20K+ poly VC Clive, you're a bit late; I've got most of it done... :icon_lol:

I hope so, too! This was a historically important aircraft and I'd love to see it in CFS3. I'll bet all the painters would give us many skins for this great plane, and just maybe Taz could give us a Ca-5 Wirraway modded from it. I believe that the long exhaust was on the Harvard versions, the radome was post-war.

Taz, I hope you persevere and get the cockpit sorted out, looked like a great start. The knowledgeable guys on this forum are always willing to help out, I've seen it so many times. But, number one, look after yourself, and know that you've more fans than you think. You're talented and the Red Baron's plane that you made had to be the most wicked looking a/c ever! :)

Thanks

When you have nothing to do all day I build planes built two of them over the weekend redid the champion lastnight and finished up the changes to day working on the cockpit now should be a very straight forward one the hawker was fun did that one in about a day the one that looks like the texan will redo that one from scratch will salvage some parts from the texan but will do most of it all over again just for giggles the T-6 cockpit is coming along as you noticed the hawker is getting there that champion is about done just have to put it in the pplane and paint it and release it other than that just playing in the hanger of madness and remapping snoopy in his sopwith so that makes like 7 planes i think i am working on at the same time which is fun get bored on one jump to the other that is how i get so much done.
