Team Outhouse RTWR 2012 Practice 1

Baton is free at HI01
(tracking server error)

after landing, Duenna hung for a moment and put up error msg :Cannot end flight, flight not started

(note, Duenna distance is 99.3 MSFS planner showed 100.9nm)

Well, since we have to stop in Australia, at YMJM, and we also have to make two stops below 40 degrees S LAT, it looks like a path to New Zealand makes sense. It doesn't looks like we can make it without exceeding the 550 nm leg length limit, which means we'll use up some wild cards, but at three each per pilot, we're probably in no danger of running out over the vast empty Pacific (or Indian). But if we're going to use them, we may as well get the most out of them. To that end, PLCH is 1200 nm away (more or less) and has a 7000 foot runway. Just thinking out loud, studying the map over coffee.

I like your thinking Paul. I was considering the northern route but as you say we need two below 40° and we can get those in NZ and Tasmania. NSFA in Samoa could be a next option (with a wildcard) then a regular leg to NFTF on Tonga and another wildcard to the NZ coast.

But if I read Dave's rules correctly, a wildcard leg may not exceed 1402 nm... Also, the baton is currelty at HI01, a tiny airport with trees on one end and big dirt berm on the other. Fun getting a 1500 nm range ship out of that one... :)

For me HI01 is like a carrier on the end of runway 5 when taking off. The other side has trees and a small hill.

By my count getting to the islands where we can island hop will cost us two wildcard legs which is not too bad.

True and Rob cunningly dropped it there to make it difficult to fly even a default plane for 25 NM to a bigger airport! :violent:

One option is a regular leg to PHFS on Tern Island then a regular leg to JON Johnston Atoll followed by a wildcard to PCIS on Canton Island (6,000 ft asphalt) then a wilcard to NFTF on Tonga (8,800 ft asphalt) followed by another wildcard to NZ.

Just thinking out loud Dave. I've got to go the hospital here in a little bit and don't have time to start up FS at the moment.

Once you remove the cargo/passengers from a -7B, you'd be surprised at what it can do.

I just did a couple of test flights and I can get the Convair 990 out of HI01 with 33% fuel on board using less than 75% of the runway! That fuel would get us to PLCH even with the 40 kt headwind I just encountered on the test. So it is do-able at the moment but against that headwind I think a jet is in order.

I just did a little test and I could get the RB50 off the ground with a full load of fuel and full compliment of crew. No payload.

That is way more gas than is needed to get there

Just tried it myself in the -7B and with a full fuel load and 500lbs, it rolled off the end of the cliff at 95kts, dropped down about 100ft and started flying.

Might be a good trip for the Howard 500. It's got pretty good range too.

Off to hospital as soon as the grandkids are picked up by their parents.
