The Aircraft Carrier Thread.

Yeah, I got yer sandwich right HEE-AH. :p
REAL Navy ships are painted black and..

Woah, I must have been having a flashback to the good old days. :dizzy:

🤣

Before I totally de-rail my own thread, I should get to work finishing the T-45 update kit. :wiggle:

BTW, for Mike (Sir), would you like to tell the folks how to properly execute a "SIERRA-HOTEL Break"? 😁
The only thing I know for certain is Rule#6, DO NOT screw up the final approach. :dizzy:

With all due respect, shipmate, I know several P-3 / H-3 aviators and DD / CG blackshoes who knew how to sink a sub, as well. Always will be a cat and mouse game!

Trust me, we could have a pretty good discussion on that topic. 😁
The P-3 operators out of Pearl didn't like me too much. :wiggle:

Sbob , thanks for your enhancements to the Razbam TA-4. I’ve always liked the A-4 and I have all 4 Razbam A-4 volumes installed. I’m going to start carrier ops with my military install of FS2004 and your information in this thread will be invaluable. I do have one question about the Razbam A-4 models…are the drop tanks removable or are they hard-coded into the model? Thanks again.

I guess you could re-paint the textures with 0,0,0 black and make them invisible? :unsure:
I haven't tried it with the Skyhawk but I used that trick on some Alphasim B-52 repaints and it was OK.

For the Record, I have absolutely nothing against Submariners; I wear a Military cap and carry a Challenge Coin repping our "State" Submarine,
SSN-788. Plus, the tome Submarine Cuisine is one of my favorite Books! :biggrin-new:

Regarding the Subject at hand, I fly Kaz Ito's Skyhawk; I'm not even sure if the RAZBAM A-4 is still available for sale.

For you Skyhawk fans. :eagerness:

Viper, just download the TA-4 "update kit". :cool: Because its getting tough to find these downloads, you get the complete aircraft.

The T-45 kit will be more conventional. Just swap out the sound folder and make some edits to the aircraft.cfg file. I'll include the complete panel.cfg and any gauges you might need. There are really nice IRIS T-45 repaints out there, so I think its easier to do a copy/paste job.

The best meal I ate underway was a "halfway night" dinner on the Bremerton. Steak, a baked tater, and at the end of the serving line was a bowl full of ice and small cartons of shelf stable FRESH MILK. 😁 Milk and fresh veggies are the first things to go when you get underway. This was back when Parmalat was still a new thing in the states. Our cooks had smuggled the milk aboard (allegedly at midnight) before we left.

Ok thanks very much. I’ll give that a try.

Well, that's half the story. You would also have to use 0,0,0 black on the alpha layer of the same texture.
Let me play around with it. In most cases it works but the parts don't go completely invisible. Its more like watching Predator. You can kind-of tell that something's supposed to be there. :indecisiveness:

You can still download the complete IRIS/DSB T-45 Goshawk, you just have to find it. :unsure:

Look at the top of the page. :wiggle:

I should be uploading the update kits for the T-45 and the T-34B by the end of the weekend.

Sounds like a night RAG CQ goat rope - many comms stitched together and does not give a realistic picture of what it is like - i.e., planes are not this close together, too much chatter

The update kit for the Alphasim T-34C Turbo Mentor is ready to download. :wiggle:

This is a fun little plane to cruise around in. I did mostly cosmetic updates for bigger monitors and higher resolutions plus a spiffy sound folder for single engine turbo props. :loyal:

I wanted to upload the kit for the IRIS/DSB T-45 Goshawk at the same time but there are some small issues I'm still trying to fix.

-The 2D HUD display is sitting too high. I KNOW I fixed this many years ago, I just can't recall how I did it (yet). :dizzy:

-There is a REALLY bizarre texture artifact in the VC that only shows up in non-stock repaints and ONLY at night. I've tried replacing cockpit textures with the default versions and I can't clear it up. Maybe its a texture palette issue with the repaints? Otherwise, I'm out of ideas.

-I'd like to replace the HUD in the 2D and VC views with something better once I fix the other two problems.

Otherwise, its easier now to to do carrier landings at night. :wiggle: It isn't a piece of cake, but its better. If I can't figure it out by the end of this week, I'll call it "good" and upload the kit. These aren't big problems, they are just frustrating.

Grr.. There's something I already mentioned in this thread but forgot to include in the T-34C update kit. :dizzy:

Open the aircraft.cfg file in Notepad and look for the [electrical] section.

You want to make SURE electric_always_available is set to "1". This is the easiest way to make sure the battery doesn't go dead.

[electrical]
max_battery_voltage = 24
generator_alternator_voltage = 28
max_generator_alternator_amps = 60
electric_always_available = 1
flap_motor = 0, 5, 17
gear_motor = 0, 5, 17
autopilot = 0, 5, 17
avionics_bus = 0, 10, 17
avionics = 1, 5, 17
pitot_heat = 0, 2, 17
additional_system = 0, 20, 17
marker_beacon = 1, 2, 17
gear_warning = 0, 2, 17
fuel_pump = 0, 5, 17
starter1 = 0, 20, 17
light_nav = 0, 5, 17
light_beacon = 0, 5, 17
light_landing = 0, 5, 17
light_taxi = 0, 5, 17
light_strobe = 0, 5, 17
light_panel = 0, 5, 17

So, I want to cover adding some NAS scenery to your sim. :wiggle:

If you're hell-bent on crashing into the fan tail or the island, skip this post BUT there's a reason I keep harping on the training aircraft.
Like the B-52, there's a LOT of flying you need to do using the seat of your pants.

You can memorize procedures and carrier landing patterns until the cows come home, the harsh truth is that there will be a LOT going on in a very short time span when its time for you to catch a wire. I'll cover the special tools you can use (your best buddy, the AOA Indexer) later on, but for now you HAVE to get used to flying and maneuvering at a high AOA and being able to touch down where you intended. Forget the "ideal AOA" for now, concentrate on staying in control when the gear and flaps are out and the nose is pointed up. Can you maintain level flight? Can you maintain a glide slope? How does your aircraft feel just before you stall? This kind of training is done best over land. Aircraft carriers operate on tight schedules, which is why you need the NAS scenery and the close-by NOLFs.

Finding NAS scenery isn't that tough. You could opt for a MAIW "full monty" package including scenery and AI traffic. This is the easiest way to go. Its also the least efficient in terms of your hardware and storage. Still, for modern systems MAIW won't hurt you. What it will do is dominate your your set-up if you allow it. I really like the MAIW packages. Its good scenery and accurate AI traffic. The downside is that (I suspect) MAIW packages are designed for you to taxi to a good viewing spot then shut down and watch the show. Things can (and will) get complicated if you want to take off and fly around in the pattern. Still, I rank the MAIW packages at the top of the list. :eagerness:

You could also search for "SDB" or "Team SDB" and see what turns up. This is older scenery and AI but it works just fine. AVSIM has a good selection of their old payware scenery. The AI traffic can look like refugees from FS2K, but you need to ask yourself if its really that important- as long as you don't crash into it. :unsure: You always have the option of upgrading (mix and match) your older AI traffic to newer MDLs and textures.

Your next option would be searching for stand-alone AFCAD BGLs. You know what base you want, take a minute to do some digging and find its ICAO code. Now you can go to your favorite download site and start digging. AFCADS can be found as "one offs" or in groups. Sometimes its your only option, and they work just fine.

While I harp on using NAS scenery and traffic, you should also have a plan on how you'll use it. After all, at the end of your training you'll be going off to the fleet and your soon-to-be home squadron. Keep some notes on what you installed and where its located, for when its time to dump it all. Or, maybe you'll figure out that being an Instructor on land ain't so bad and you'll want to keep this stuff installed for when you complete your sea tour.

There's one last thing to keep in mind. Every now and then I'll mention that "Life begins at 60 (FPS)". :wiggle:
I'm not being a snob (mostly). You WANT to keep your FPS as high as you can. Outside of hovering in a helo, this is some of the most demanding flying you can do in FS. You want to keep your FPS at 60+ (or as high as your system allows) because you'll need it. :wavey:

My only reason for posting it was just in case someone wanted to have some background ambience playing whilst tooling around in the pattern.
I never vouched for or was aware of its accuracy with regards to the 'chronological' order of correct Carrier comms. :)
