The Ongoing Mystery Aircraft Thread Part Deux.

Yes those are Gipsy engines...

Please press on if you know this little cruiser. Will be in and out tomorrow.

fasm- not a Dragon. Better go ahead and reveal. This is it's close cousin, a Breda Ba.44.

Open board! :wavey:

I have a description of a Romanian flying boat called Stoika which fits this very closely, but can't find a picture.......

The originals are not romanian but not that far away.
But this one have been built by a major country for tests I presume...

I think it is probably Italian but can't track it down.
There was a lot of copying going on, and Macchis, Donnet-Denhauts, Loehners etc all looked very similar.

This one, however, has a very distinctive strutting arrangement, which is where my mysterious Romanian comes in. Have a read of this and you will see the only differing point is the unbalanced v balanced rudder. Fascinating. Maybe Mr Stoika defected to Italy !

Yes, very close but not Italian. It's not a country that famous for their flying boats... But at this period they sure knows how to build planes...

You're right ! it's a Loening copy (2 built for military test I presume) of the austria-hungarinan Lohner K/Kappa ? which being captured by the italian inspired the Macchi M5...

Does that count as a spot? If so I will take it! :icon_lol: (Lefty did the heavy lifting here). Never did find a Lohner-Loening connection though.

What is this great beast?

I think your great beast is the Sud-Est (SNCASE) Armagnac used as a test-bed for the SNECMA Atar turbojets. For some reason best known to our Gallic friends it was relabelled S.O 2060.

Makes up for recent failures - still smarting at being stumped by floaters..let's see if I can get my own back ......(this is not retouched other than removal of the description on the photo!)

Curious indeed - this machine was one of two belonging to the Bulgarian Navy which were appropriated by l'Aviation Maritime at Varna in 1918.
A Rumpler 6B1 indeed - well spotted sir. :icon29:
