Another euphemism for BG is ...'Its raining Cats & Dogs' - I think the english equivalent of 'Il pleut des cordes'...what say you PH? Not good on Italian I'm afraid, so cannot offer an Italian phrase!

I'm equally unable to help in Italian. It wasn't on the menu when I was at school. But as to French, I've enquired of our farming neighbour's twelve year old son - who is the fount of toute ma connaissance française - and he tells me that also I can use:

il pleut à verse
la pluie battante
il tombe des cordes

as well as, wait for it, after all, he is the son of an agriculteur -

il pleut comme un vache qui pisse

which he found immensely amusing, whilst it elicited a disapproving scowl from his mother!

Hello boys and girls!
Awfully sorry for keeping you waiting and herebelow you will find my today's grainy mistery which I'm sure will be solved very quickly:

I find the linguistic debate extremely interesting and thanks to Lefty I've learned quite a few additional verbs for "raining".
Alas in italian we don't have the abundance of expressions they have in Scotland actually the only one that comes to my mind right now is:
"Piove a catinelle"
Though I could add the following in german (which reminds me of having been a "Gastarbeiter" in Frankfurt many many years ago)
"es giesst in Strömen".
Additionally I find very humorous P.H.'s idiom:
"Il pleut comme une vache qui pisse"

Hi Keith

The first (the one with the indigenous ENMASA Tigre G-IVB engine) of a series of 2 aircraft. Have seen it with following designations:
D-750-1 (design, Emil Dewoitine), I-18 (Iberavia which started propject) AVD-12 (AISA, completed the project), XL-10-1 (Spanish AF).
Number 2 was the AVD-12C (XL-10B) with Continental O-470-1 engine.

The Spanish AF ordered the CASA C-127 (Dornier Do.27A-1 instead.

Anyone can tell me what AVD stands for? (please, please !)

This one's been thrashed around in various forums, as you know, Walter, and I suspect nobody really knows where the 'AVD' came from. My best guess would be 'AVioneta' meaning light aircraft in Spanish, and 'D' for Dewoitine, who may or may not have designed it ! Apparently not as good a machine as it looked.
