I suspect Aviafrance is to blame here - as far as I can make out, there was no Latham L.2 !
There were two L.1's - F-ATAM and F-ESEJ, referred to as #1 and #2. The engine strutting arrangements were slightly different.
The '11' on nose and rudder was the contest number.
#1 was irreparably damaged by 'helpful' British amateurs whilst beaching, and #2 suffered magneto failure.

M ay I intervene in this learned and interesting discussion....the caption on the pic reads Latham L-1 whilst the

"II" on nose and rudder is the race number...In view of the above is Jacques Moulin's picture of Latham L-2 on Aviafrance to be considered a mistake? "To Posterity the arduous judgement" (to paraphrase Alessandro Manzoni's poem)

Yes, Carlo, everyone makes mistakes - made one myself once !(think it was in 1972....) Aviafrance is a great resource, but not infallible .

Mind you, we are talking French designations here......no wonder they drink absinthe.....
 
I hoped the weed were a good clue: that's all in the taiga!

The illustrious designer has only built two airplanes. No photos exist from the first one and this one is the second in its first form. First flight: 1 July, 1935.

Indeed - it was the mention of 'taiga'. Russia was already ruled out, and obviously some of you had been trawling Aerofiles without success.

That left Canada, and as luck had it, I embarked on a back-to-front search of the Putnam 'Canadian Aircraft since 1909'. There she was !
 
Thanks, Mike, I tried googling for that Canadian plane, but without that luck you had. :encouragement:

Sometimes printed paper seems much more favourable than imaginary bytes :very_drunk:
 
Well I was beginning to think that all those lovely books I bought after retirement had been rendered redundant in this electronic age, but they have their uses !
