The OZX Grumman Goose HD Redux Now Released!

I kind of hate to point this out with all the work that has been done and the repaints look great, but even with the v1.20 you still get a warning that you are over weight without even having any passengers.

Is this something that can be corrected?

I didn't download the update.. I've long since re-worked the cfg file for realistic performance, handling and weights... and the AIR file for lift, gear drag and CHT response.

I'll grab it later to see what it looks like.

Are you seeing all the possible loading stations at the 'Fuel and Paylod' screen ? .. corresponding to a post of mine on the 4th page of this thread ? If so.. it's probably just a matter of the empty, and maximun weight definitions.. You'll see them in the [Weight and Balance] paragraph.. they're self-identifying.

I'm away from my main computer right now.. I'll post the weights I used, later tonight.

Yes, we are seeing all the stations, and i removed all the weights that are taken into account by the empty weight figures. You'll still need to balance cargo/pax and fuel though. The 12000 pound tow mentioned by someone in this thread is for the turbo goose only. Both versions of this goose have a maximum tow of 8000 pounds (approx.) I raised the empty weight up to 5496 pounds instead of 4,496 pounds because the float retraction unit adds a thousand pounds to the empty weight.

i didnt change anything with lift or drag because i worked those out using some calculators i found on martindales site.. I trust the numbers..

Glad your enjoying it..
Pam

Ok.. mystery solved..

It was weird.. I downloaded the new package.. and istalled it.. Topped off the tanks and with just the pilots and the other standard loads (lockers, water tank etc)(no passenger or baggage), and sure enough; it was overweight.. So I checked the empty and max weights, and they looked correct..

Then I replaced it with my Goose.. same thing, just full fuel.. and there was enough weight left available for a few passengers and bags.. and I'm thinking.. "Oh crap.. this is gonna be tough to nail down"..

Then ... POOF.. it hit me. You still have the 170 gallon tanks in there. I have 110 gallon tanks..

Either is realistic, in theory.. I just never found data about a Goose with other thah 110 gallon tanks. And with those 110 gallon tanks, and realistic fuel-consumption.. the range matches all published data too. The 170 gallon tanks are from the MS default Goose (and why their max weight is more than 9000 lbs).. and very well could have been the tanks in the one they modeled (though I never found Goose data with them).

It's realistic so long as the pilot knows that he's got extended range tanks.. and if he fills them full.. it's just him and a co-pilot. Any load at all will require less than full tanks..

For anyone interested in changing the cfg for the 110 gallon tanks.. they'll need a modified fuel gauge, and an edit to the panel.cfg to use it. It's a seperate CAB file... which ALSO includes an aispeed indicator in knots .. to match the lovely V-speed placard.. (modified, hi-res clone of the DC3 airspeed indicator.. the original was blurry and ugly)..

::chuckles:: Call me a sadist. I rather like the idea that to get the pax and cargo you gotta lower the fuel. Thats the way it is in real aircraft,so it's a practice i continued here.. :D
Remember, this was never intended as a passenger plane. It was a rich mans toy, so anything additional in there will take away from either the fuel or the pax/cargo..

WELLLL.. it carries passengers in MY world *grin* (BIG grin).. In fact, it was the first aircraft purchased by, "Red Pine ..Serving the Great Lakes Islands since 1959" .. the workhorse that helped them grow into six plane fleet.. They even have a fixed-prop version, that does nothing but ferry passengers to/from Mackinac Island, from St. Ignace,, a whopping 11 mile round-trip.. never getting above pattern altitude.

Seriously though... this beast is something special, now..

THANKS all of you !

The same principle was adopted by A2A with the B377 Pam so don't feel too bad about it. ;)

In real life the B377 could have a full fuel load OR a full pax load BUT NOT both and that was modelled in the A2A version too. It caught me out a few times in the very early alpha testing period when I went trundling down the runway, through the perimeter fence and off on a cross-country road trip and wondering all the while where my lift had gone to! :isadizzy:

Also for the record we never set out to make something that was 'perfect' just something that would approach the real life version better and I think that Pam has done a magnificent job on that.

Brett,
at this point, I thought you were going to say that you would make the changes available as a download or would send them in response to a PM with email address. Would that be possible, please ?
thanks in advance,

Yeah.. I'm going to put some finishing touches on the gauge (get the arcs perfect) and then make up a zip file, that will have that gauge CAB file (Airspeed in knots.. 110 gallon tanks gauge), a panel.cfg file, and an aircraft.cfg file that will have ONLY the tanks changed (Pam's FDEs are fine.. mine might be a little too much for the average simmer)..

I'll email the zip file, to those PM-ing an email address. No instructions or advice... the person will have to know how to replace and add files... and know to make backups.

Thanks for explaining about the tank capacity and why the plane is overweight with full tanks. This is really a great looking and flying plane.

I do wonder why the default Goose had 170 gal tanks and did not show as overweight. What did you change in your model to make it more realistic so that now if you top off the tanks it is overweight. Please understand that I am not complaining, I am just curious!

Rod

I have another question, on Page 1 of this thread there are screen shots of this Goose with floats mounted on the wings, anyway I believe that these screen shots are of this Goose. The version that I downloaded off the OZx site does not have these floats, how do I add them?

Regards,

Rod

Thanks Roger, another couple of questions that are hopefully not to stupid sounding, do you always lower the floats to land on water or is there sometimes that you do not. Are all water landing Goose equipped with floats?

Not Roger but yes to your question. Keeps the airplane from dropping a wing into the water, especially in turns or when at rest.

First off, an amazing job on the Goose! You guys bestowed an incredible "free" gift to the rest of us in the Flight Sim community. :ernae:
I posted the release over at FSE and many pilots over there (especially myself) are enjoying this model. I'm using the new FDEs, water spray, and lighting more so than the HD textures because I have my own little Frankenstein design that I like to fly (would love to have an all-white dds texture to slap my own skin on).

Anyways, my question pertains to the floats…

I noticed that the aircraft remains upright when the floats are up (instead of tipping on its side). Is this due to an adjustment in the files you guys provided? Usually when the floats are up and the realism settings are maxed out, it will tip to one side. The reason I would like the A/C to tip (if possible) is to accomplish taxiing maneuvers like this one:

It’s not a big deal but I was just wondering.

PS: Banana Bob, Thanks for the Prop textures...love the way they look!!!

yeahh. the uprightness is my fault.. it's caused because the stations listings in the blueprints are centered along the longitudinal axis. There really were no options for latitudinal placements, and when i tried the plane crashed on load up. However, the uprightness of it is an illusion. it disappears quickly when you throttle up and hit the rudder or ailerons.
