To cache, or not to cache... that is the question.

Which pertains to addon scenery.

While adding Ian Elliott's newest scenery, I noticed that there were two options: "Cache this scenery" and "Use this secnery directly."

I'm not sure what either does over the other, or if there is a performance improvement on one option or another.

Anyone know which is the preferred option (and why)?

Thanks in advance.

I would be interested in the answers too. I have never managed to really understand what those options were meaning...

In the early days, when HDD space was limited, you may have chosen not to install all of FS to the HDD.
When you started the sim, it then copied necessary files from the CD.
If you chose to cache these files, they were not removed at the end of the session.

In a modern install, you would have all the files on HDD, and caching becomes irrelevant: all files are read from HDD

I actually encountered a downside to clicking "cache" a while back when temporarily disabling a particular scenery so that a different one for the same area could be evaluated. For what ever reason the cache was still active at least partially which made for some "interesting" looking scenery.
I fiddled around with my new scenery for quite some time until I realized what the problem was.

So i would stay away fom that option.

Cheers
Stefan
