TSR2

Indeed it did, proved to be excellent too but a labour government cancelled it because of spiraling costs, it was the most advanced aircraft ever built in it's day and to give you an idea of performance one of these could outrun an English electric lightning on one engine!

Thanks Noddy. Great heads up on this sleek bird.

Reminds me of several planes; Concorde, that American SST Bomber (I forget what its called), and that German WWII recon jet that was a high wing.

Very slick design. Nice.....

I went to Alphasim and none of the plane links work.

Does anyone know where to go for this plane?

Many thanks,

Bill

'Alphasim' is now dead Bill, except for freeware. All products they want to continue selling will be distributed under the 'Virtavia' label. A few of the AS oldies have popped up at SimMarket but so far only one Fs9 aircraft, the rest are all FsX models. Maybe the TSR.2 will be sold through SimMarket , maybe it will be freeware or maybe it will just disappear..

Noddy, I think that the TSR2 listed in the link is older than the FS9 version that I purchased a few years ago. Out of curiosity I tried the FS9 version in FSX and after adjusting the display size setting in the panel config file I managed to get it to fly reasonably well in FSX. Take off is helped by using 1st position flaps. Stalling was not a problem as I kept a reasonable amount of throttle on at all times.

Other problems in FSX Acceleration were as follows:-

1. HUD flickers between normal display and partially opaque display.
Strange one this as I have not seen one that fluctuates like this before.

2. Engines stop but are easily restarted when starting from runway ready to fly.

3. On cutting the throttle on landing the engines spool down and eventually stop before
completing the landing run.

Pretty sure that these problems can be overcome with a bit of time and effort. Too involved with other FS issues at present but if I find some spare time I just may try and fix things.

John N.

Wonderful machine. I remember seeing it at the Farnborough Air Show. Incredible ground following radar technology way ahead of its time, massive power and a competent airframe. If they had left the thing alone, imagine what might have followed...still, back then, they all firmly believed pilotless aircraft was the more sensible investment...

Mr Ito has done a pretty good TSR2 [ on Flightsim's site I believe].

Only for Fs2002 / Fs2004 according to the 'Read me'.

Mal,

The most annoying problem to me is the fluctuating HUD that I mentioned in an earlier post. I have used a Hex editor and found the background bitmap to the appropriate part of the VC containing the HUD, it is located within the model file as I suspected. Unfortunately I don't yet know enough about editing the Hex values so it would just be a matter of trial and error which could be a drawn out process and even then maybe it would not give a solution. It could be as simple as changing the alpha for the bitmap but the problem for me is knowing which entry to change in the hex table. If I get more time and solve it then I will let you know. If in the meantime anyone else has a greater understanding of the hex values and can help then that would be most welcome. I can easily post a screenshot of part of the table. I don't see the other problems being great and know how to sort them but I probably won't be happy unless I can sort out that HUD first. :ernae:

John,
thanks for taking a look at that...I know nothing about hex editing but this model has quite a few other problems in fsx i.e., flight dynamics, engines shutting down afterburners not working properly etc. i think i'll probably take it out and not bother with it. there are too many issues and lots of other wonderful planes to fly (ones without problems) lol

having said all that...this aircraft would make a spectacular addition to FSX if it was brought up to current standards.

Mal,

As I said earlier I am not worried about the other issues as I have fixed these for other FS9 portovers in the past. If necessary I would rebuild or create a new .air file, amend the config file and add different A/B effects or whatever else is necessary. However, that HUD problem is the one that I cannot solve and it detracts so much from the VC view that personally I am not able to tolerate it. I will fiddle with the Hex editor a bit more and if I get lucky and get success then I will progress the other issues. At this moment in time I am not confident that I will solve the HUD issue as I have also been trying to solve a similar problem with the gunsight reticle which appears as a black area in the VC of the Alphasim BAe Lightning T5 when ported to FSX.

I don't know if you use it but Jerry Beckwith's "Air Wrench" is a superb little programme for editing .air files where most of the aircraft's parameters that determine flight characteristics are located. It takes a little bit of time to learn how to use effectively but once you get used to it it is very useful. One of the best utilities that I have ever bought. I saw reference to it in Piglet's models and thought it must be worth a look if he uses it. Again if anyone feels that they can help solve or solve the HUD problem then please post or contact me. :ernae:

Best regards,

John N.
