I went over to my grandfather's house this evening... He lives one block over from me.... He was looking for a briefcase that he owns that holds all his important information... He just couldn't locate it... So I helped, turned the place upside down... No dice...Couldn't understand it..

Came home... Got a call... It was Grandpa, I said, "You found it?!" He replied "No, I was robbed".... Turns out he noticed four handguns were missing from his bedroom, oddly where the briefcase was...

Someone got into his house, stole this briefcase that contained the deed to the house, car title, will, important documents, and a few grand in cash.... Luckily he has copies of all information... and he only seemed miffed that one of his fav. guns was gone.... Odd thing is, nothing else was touched.....nothing! There is a gun cabinet downstairs with near 15 rifles...not touched....

It's not that he out anything, or gonna miss the $$ (the son of a gun makes 5X a year what I make on retirement alone!!!!!) It's the fact that someone came into his home, and took his things....This is a man who is 86 years old.... A man who flew around 40 combat missions over Europe, someone that dedicated his entire life to keeping our world safe, and someone would do that...I know these stories are not rare anymore, but my God....what I wouldn't give to catch the twerp...

Thats it... just wanted to vent... already wore out the wife's ear....

Your grandfather may not miss the money that was stolen but keeping large amounts of cash at home is not a good idea. It also makes him a potential target for future break-ins.

Things are a bit different across the pond,mate.I had over 20 rifles and 15000 rounds of ammo in my house at one time.Just my personal collection at the time including a FN FAL .You guys can't do that over there is my understanding.:USA-flag:

It's high time for the wild west show again Witt. Good people are going to have to start using the arms they possess against the plethora of out of criminals out there looking for drug money. Legalizing soft drugs might take some non-criminals out of priison, but the bulk of the illegal drug business in my woods are for legal pharmaceuticals like Oxycontin and Methadone. Hardly any marijuana to be found, but plenty of crack and methamphetamine. Powder cocaine is reserved only for the uber rich, the law here will not touch these people.

Another thing,Witt.This bunch probably didn't take the 15 rifles because they were not prepared to cart that much stuff,They will be back....be prepared,they see an easy mark now and will wait a while but most likely will return.Just a heads up.
 
safn1949 makes a very good point. Was there any sign of forced entry ? Any idea of how access was made to the house ?

Probably a good idea to store the rest of his guns elsewhere for a few weeks.

Tell him thanks for doing the tough stuff in the 40's for us.
 
Thanks everybody... He did a substantial amount of hunting when he was in the service in Germany, and later in the mountains in Colorado... I guess they have a muzzle loading season in Colorado??? So he enjoyed that... As for how they gained entry, I really have no idea.... No signs of forced entry at all like I said, he didn't even know he had been robbed! I have been pondering this all day at work... I believe it was someone local.. meaning, someone within the near vacinity... I would bet he was either robbed maybe while napping in another room, or a more likely scenario, while he was mowing the lawn in the back of the house... Regardless they were careless thieves... where the .45 was, was a table full of perscription medicine.... and the other pistols were at the top of a closet...they took the to Colt .45's but left both clips?????? Doesn't make any damn sense... When do criminals make sense I suppose... He contaced the police today.... So he gave him the serial numbers on all four guns. I guess the one .45 was special. Something was done to it that made it worth more... but I can't remember what he said (I'm not a gun-guy!) Sychronized? Something special that made it worth between $1000-$1500.... He seems pretty confident if the individual ever tried to unload the guns in a legal manner, he will be caught.... Fingers crossed.... I wanted that other .45 !!!!!

Toastmaker has a very good idea. You should take custody of the remaining firearms except for the one that your Grandpa wants to shoot the thugs with when they come back.
 
If I didn't have two little ones here in the house with ne I might talk him into letting me have a couple of the rifles.... And I know it is more than possible to have firearms in a houshold with children and be safe... But right now I don't feel safe doing that.. I also told myself if I were ever come into posession of a firearm I would take every class possible on gun safety....
 
Just buy a good gunsafe with kids in the house.And even better,Talk Grand dad into getting one ...right now.Lets see these dirtbags lug that out of the house.

Regardless, I still think it would be a good idea for him to get them off the premises for a little while.

It is kind of the same thing with a situation I had with a friend a little ways back... He had this dog, a Pitbull to be exact... and he was kind of in an in-between time in his life... he was back home living with his folks, and he usually had to take the dog with him when he went places... Now I know that most Pitbulls out there are great pets.... and I am completely against aimlessly killing them like some propose... but I wouldn't let him bring it in the house when he came over.... He could let him run in the yard, but I just didn't want him around my 1 & 2 year old.... I guess I took it as an unneeded risk...Yeah, any dog is an animal at heart, and I hope Im not stereotypying, but those dogs are known for their aggression for a reason..... I guess I thought that was kind of along the same lines...

Upsetting indeed , Wittpilot. From you own words, nothing else was touched. The perpetrator & your
Grandpa know one another, as the thief knew exactly what they were after as well as where it was.

Having had my grandpa taken advantage of, am feeling your frustration.
