An old dream has finally come to life......
G'day All;
Once upon a time
(2008?)... there was this crazy guy from Kanadastan who was so rabid for CFS2 that he almost lived at SOH. He had a dream of producing a Vietnam add-on for CFS2 ... but alas, after 3 years of hard work he found it necessary to shelve the project due to:
a) some technical issues
(more research required) b) lack of free time
(don't ya just hate it when "real" life intrudes into your "virtual" life?) and
c) THE BLOODY FRAME-RATES!
My name is Dirtman and I'm a "recovering" CFS2-aholic. They say that speaking of yourself in the 3rd person is a sign of insanity ... to those who remember me here at SOH; .... yup. I'm still nutz!
I found that the sim I'd created had turned into a complete "frame-rate hog" and was virtually unplayable unless set to a very lowest screen resolution which negated most of the detailed objects & effects
(like SAM smoke trails & F4 exhaust). My PC at that time just didn't have the power that I needed and I was unable to afford something better so I began spending my time learning to repair/build/refurbish/upgrade PC's and have picked up many "tricks" and "accidental discoveries" along the way.
It's now 2017, my life has changed, got plenty of free-time once again and I've built 2 identical "dream" PC's:
AMD FX-8370 Eight-Core Processor, 4334 MHz
Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0 Motherboard
16 GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance RAM
GTX 750 Ti - 2 GB GDDR5
850W Gold PS
Win7 Ultimate x64
I really don't think that frame-rates will be a problem anymore.
I've just spent this morning reading this thread, downloading the packages & having a good look at just what you fellows have created ... I must say that I'm MORE that a "little" impressed !!!
***jaw drops to floor ... saliva drips from chin ... hardening appendage noted in trousers***
I have not begun to install it yet. I've just opened all the .zips and had a good look inside. Looks to me like you guys really have your sh*t together! Your attention to detail is amazing!
I'm looking forward to taking your sim "out for a spin" shortly; but first I've got some questions & some answers....
Questions:
1) I cannot d/l the 1st required item:
Headed to the Tonkin Gulf - the link does not work ... do I need this right now? or is it not yet ready?
2) I didn't see any URIES for USAF, USN & NVA specifically personalized for Vietnam... Dear Gawd; please tell me that you guys aren't just using the stock "cartoon" screens!
- I have made almost a COMPLETE set specifically for VN if you're interested
3) I didn't notice any operational SAM's ... did I miss them or are you not using them yet? If not: They WILL make you "wet your pants" when encountered during a mission.

Re: Burning ISO's to CD - Something you all might find helpful:
Please forget about CD's as they have been obsolete for many many years and try this: Open
ANY .iso with WinRar
1) create a new folder on your desktop
2) right-click the .iso
3) select "open with"
4) select WinRar
5) extract or copy-paste contents to the new folder
6) open the folder - all .iso files are right there
7) locate the "setup.exe" & either "double-click" or right-click & select "Run as Administrator"
8) Bob's yer Uncle ... now go have a beer
Now isn't that easier, faster & cheaper than "dicking-around" with a CD? ... I thought you'd say that!
WinXP SP3
Once upon a time you could d/l this from MS as an .exe file
(316 MB - I have it here) dunno about now.
Install as in step 7 above
If it still won't load then you'll need to install Microsoft NET Framework 1 & 2. I had this problem 11 years ago.
Can't load WinXP on newer PC's
This is because WinXP was designed to run on older "IDE" hard drives. It lacks the drivers to run on newer "SATA" h/d's
You must open the WinXP .iso and add generic SATA drivers.
Then either re-burn the .iso to CD or load it onto a bootable thumb-drive
Consider using the thumb-drive method as it is significantly faster. How fast is significantly faster?
I loaded my new PC with Win7 Ultimate x64 ... it took 9m 50s start to finish .... this includes the TWO REQUIRED REBOOTS -
that's FAST!!!!
I hope yous find my questions and insights useful and
THANK YOU ALL for this fine looking work!
