Vietnam for CFS2 Beta Release

Wolfman!!!!!!

Welcome back you old crazy man! :applause: Nice screenshots!

Thank You my Brother .. Feels nice to be back !!! :wavey:

Hey .... just who are you callin' "old" ???? Check yer own Birth Certificate ... Grandpa!!!

FYI: It's MY FRIENDS that makes me so crazy ... ya know !!! (and now you know, that I know...that you know.....) :dizzy:

Those screenshots are from the old VN project (2008-ish). I was still using WinXP Pro x86 with a 512 MB AGP card back then.

.... now with the new "super computer" running Win7 x64 & a big fat GTX 750 Ti (2 GB) .. in the same old VN sim .... the screens look so real, they are ... um .... unreal???

I hope to have the new "The Vietnam Air War Project" up & running in a few days .... will post some new ones soon .... in widescreen too!!!
Oh YEAH baby!!!! :redfire:

Dear Sir:
I have inspected the contents of this download and found a very minor problem ... hardly worth mentioning.
I am unable to locate an updated country.cfg to allow these new Uries (aka "VN Screen Pack") to be displayed properly (or even at all)

I have checked the "Country config and mdl.txt to main CFS2 folder" download at "Free Flight Site" but have found it does not work with the new screens.

Should I:

a) Create an updated "country.cfg"; right freakin' now ...

or

b) Wash, wax & detail your Rolls Royce, pickup the dry cleaning, walk the dogs, pickup anniversary gift for Mrs. Dice and prepare your Yacht for sea; first?

Your direction in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

ROTF-LMFAO !!!! :costumed-smiley-034

Houston ... This Apollo 13 ... YOU have a problem

Oh CRAP !!!

While constructing the new VN country.cfg I found a HUGE error: The poo-poo has hit the fan!

Please excuse my original oversight ... been out of CFS2 for several years ... I should have caught this right away ... as it seems I may be one of the few who understands this ... allow me to explain:

When built; CFS2 designated "Allies" (friend) and "Axis" (enemy) in a very specific way:

In the country.cfg:
"Allies" are designated using odd numbers 1=Britain, 3=USA
"Axis" are designated using even numbers 2=Germany, 4=Japan

There is a important reason for this: so don't screw around with it!

In the OBJECTS_DP folder, you'll see the .dp's (damage profiles) for original CFS2 weapons, vehicles & structures etc. they usually (but not always) have an "allegiance=" under the sub-heading of [MISC_DATA] to denote which "friend or enemy" group they belong to.

This way, if you fly as Britain or USA (odd) then objects for Germany or Japan (even) show up as enemies & vise-versa.

So what's my point here you ask? Tell me something new Durt?

Looking at the VN country.cfg, it has USAF=1 (correct) US Navy=2 (wrong) North Vietnam=3 (wrong)

This configuration will not allow the proper function of original CFS2 objects in Vietnam including tanks, truck & toilets!

The explanation below concerns ONLY the ORIGINAL CFS2 object .dp's located in the OBJECTS_DP folder.

If using ANY original CFS2 (Ger., Bri., US, Jpn.) AAA or gun etc. in a VN mission; they will fire at the wrong targets because the "allegiance" numbering system is screwed up.

This will cause ANY original CFS2 weapon designated "allegiance=2 or 4" (German or Japanese) to fire upon a USAF a/c or object (allegiance=1) this is correct.

BUT for the US Navy (allegiance=2) this will cause ANY original CFS2 weapon designated "allegiance=1 or 3" (Britain or USA) to now fire upon it. (wrong)

The problem is US Navy (allegiance=2) is now an "Axis" and the original CFS2 allegiance=2 or 4 (German & Japanese) object weapons now see it as a friend.

Similarly North Vietnam (allegiance=3) is now a friend of the weapons designated "allegiance=1" so Original Brit. or AMER. object weapons will not fire upon it because it's NOT seen as an enemy.
(wrong)

This will NOT affect air to air combat; but will affect AAA & surface targets, including the way they are displayed & designated (red/green) in the target radar screen.

There are 4 ways to fix this but none are easy, quick or fun.

1) Edit the country.cfg to
USAF allegiance=1
NVA allegiance=2
Navy allegiance=3

Best fix BUT - this will require revisions on EVERY mission & campaign.cmg. YIKES!!!!

2) Edit the "allegiance=" on every affected original CFS2 .dp in the OBJECTS_DP folder (aprx. 330 files) to reflect the changes to the new 'allegiance=" numbering system.
This is 2nd best fix - but probably the best choice... Oh Dear Gawd !!!!

3) Do not use ANY original CFS2 ground guns, AAA & objects in Vietnam.
Edit the description.dat plus remove all the orig. CFS2 corresponding object pictures in the INFO folder.
or
4) Edit ONLY the
original object .dp's that could be useful in Vietnam. Remove the rest, edit the description.dat plus remove the no longer used pictures in the INFO folder.

======================================================================================================================

During the beta testing of Vietnam-4-CFS2_v1.5 in 2008, I discovered (to my horror) the "allegiance=" mistake and in v2.0 reverted back to the original even/odd Allies/Axis numbering system; so all original CFS2 objects could be used in missions. It solved more problems than I can currently remember.

================================================================================================================================================

I know that the original "Rolling Thunder" USAF campaign (Alessandro Cimenti 2002) had the same country.cfg setup.

Sorry guys - reality can suck sometimes.
I also told you's in the beginning that I was very detail conscious ..... so don't shoot the messenger ... I'm just doin' my job!!!

I don't care if the Boss catches me ... I'm gonna have a several beers right now...

I sent you one that works, I think

I simply did not add the correct image names to the Config file

Please test and get back with me.

Thanks Dave

PS,
that is why this is a stand alone install,

All object dps have been modified to fit etc. etc.

This will not work unless it is a stand alone install

1st Hop - DaNang

My sim is up & running.
Some screens missing or not displayed - using MY country.cfg ... will try yours.
Then I'll deal with any screens that are missing, MIA or AWOL

DaNang looks VERY GOOD at 1st peek. :encouragement:

This one still doesn't work properly. :dizzy:

You'll be better off if you go back to the original country.cfg until I get it fixed.

Hi Dave,

I've been downloading and installing all the lovely new objects like the huts, jetties, animals, trees, etc. I found a couple of texture problems:

furn_01.bmp and furn_02.bmp should read furn1.bmp and furn2.bmp in order to show correctly;

There are two different tex1A.bmp files. One needs a name change and this change reflected in the corresponding bgl file.

I've made some additional pictures for the INFO folder, as well as converting the bitmaps to jpegs. A few needed name changes in order to correspond to their associated bgl files. The pictures for the banana trees still need doing. I'll send these through in the next day or two.

Thank You Kev,

I will take a look at this and make the corrections ASAP.

Thank you again for the help and info,

Dave

You're welcome Dave - this is a great project.

One more thing - HCrane.bgl is missing from the VietPortCranes package. This is an excellent object which can be used extensively in all theatres.

Kev

Thanks again Kev,

OK , I guess I updated the Page but forgot to upload the New Crane Package...Fixed

Textures on the Furns in DM Tree package also fixed.

I really like your new screens for the info package, I will also upload those later.

I am working on a few more objects so I can finally put the small Port at Xuan Phong to rest.
I swear if I ever have to lay one more railroad track in mission builder I will jump off my roof.
Thank god it is only a one story house.

Always feel free to email me direct, I know you already have it but:

Thanks Dave - I'll email you - I had that address but didn't know who owned it. I have a lot of Daves in my address list.

Dave,

Vietnam isn't really my thing but maybe I can make a small contribution. Do you have any interest in a set of scenery GI's and maybe a few helicopter crew members on the ground? It would be 2D figures from photographs like my other airfield personnel sets.
