What good movies have you seen lately?

C9G

If you liked Under the Tuscan Sun that I greatly suggest A Good Year; one of Russell Crowe's least known but best movies.

Never seen it CWO- thanks for the tip, I will go find it on Netflix and add it to my Queue. I love Russell Crowe, so I'm looking forward to seeing it.

not a movie theater movie, but "Taking Chance" floored me, currently on HBO but I like
"X-men origins, Wolverine" as an action flick, "Rocky", "Young Frankenstein","The Magnificent Seven" or if your up to it "The Seven Samurai", "Citizen kane", "The Quiet Man", "Fort Apache", and "The Searchers". So many great movies, so little time (sighs)

From the cheap seats.....

Most recently:

Knight and Day (2010) - VERY FUNNY ... Mission Impossible meets Charlie's Angels - lotsa action & laughs

Iron Man2 (2010) - GREAT ACTION & FUNNY ...Tony Stark is my hero

The Hurt Locker (2009) - Another EOD tour in beautiful downtown Baghdad.

The A Team (2010) - Liam Neeson as Hannibal Smith & pulls it off well!

The Book Of Eli (2010) - post apocalypse vehicle for Denzel Washington

Legion (2010)- post apocalypse with interesting storyline & ending

Gran Torino (2008) - GREAT - Eastwood's role is like an geriatric version of "Dirty Harry"

G.I. Joe - The Rise of Cobra (2009) - GREAT ACTION ... plus it's the first time I've EVER seen Marlon Wayans go an entire movie WITHOUT smoking pot!!! ... he's actually pretty good in this flick!

I haven't been to a theatre in many years ...
All these via "Bit-torrent" .... yes ... I'm a "free-tard"

Funny this thread should come up now; I've been thinning out the piles of VHS films I've acquired over the years and rewatching some films I haven't seen for a while.

Diva - A 1981 French film about, wait for it, music piracy. Remember, this is before Napster and the internet. A LOT of MTV video directors who later went on to feature films ripped off this film's visual aesthetic, but without any of the substance. The story: A world famous opera singer refuses to be recorded, insisting she must be heard live...

Look for a truly glorious version of Ebben? Ne andro lontana, from Catalani's "La Wally" at the beginning.

Once Upon a Time in America - A 1984 film by Sergio Leone starring Robert DeNiro, and James Woods as two childhood friends who become gangsters. There's also a very solid performance by a very young Jennifer Connelly. The important thing to remember here is that there's an edited version of this movie that was releeased in the 80s for American audiences which is an abomination, an excressance. It's no longer in production but you may find several floating around on eBay or in bargain bins. Avoid this version like the plague it is, and get the original long version that debuted at Cannes. You can find it at Blockbuster, BestBuy, or probably your local public library. This is not a film for children; while I loved the first two Godfather movies, IMO they represented a very, VERY, V-E-R-Y sanitized version of the Mafia and what it does. The characters in Once Upon a Time in America are racketeers, extortionists, rapists, and contract murderers, and Leone doesn't shy away from that. It clocks in at 229 minutes, including an internission that appears on the DVD version. There's also a very interesting commentary track, which includes the various theories about the storyline; because there are holes in the narrative that don't escape film buffs. I almost forgot the superb Ennio Morricone soundtrack. If you saw Book of Eli, Ray Stevenson is whistling it through the whole movie.

One of my favourite movies of all time and definitely one of De Niro's finest performances.:bump:

Some of the movies I've watched lately?...

The Fairies: Fairy Beach
Barbie Mermaid
Barbie and the 3 Musketeers
Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure

...the joys of being a house husband! :d

Watched "3:10 to Yuma" yesterday. Hadn't seen it. Enjoyed it. Justified ending.

They played the six Star Wars movies over the weekend of the 4th. Watched most of those.

Watched the Matrix series recently. Should have stopped at the first.

Watched one of my favorites "Blade Runner" recently. Enjoyed it for the nth time.

And an old classic the other night, "The Third Man" with Orson Wells.
:ernae:

I forgot about Legend of 1900. Watched that one twice recently....one incredibly great movie. I can't remember the guy's name...the one with the wiggly eyeballs...but he is a really good actor...just doesn't get many leading roles due to his wiggly eyeballs. Has done a number of roles as the creepy, weirdo guy...first time I saw him was on X-Files, one of the early seasons before it got really stoopid.

leone liked long films i guess. look at "once upon a time in the west" it's a great film, but it's the ben hur of cowboy movies. don't watch it if you have somewhere to go. at 165 minutes it is long, but with the all-star castr, it goes by pretty quick

Found the opening aria from Diva on YouTube. Willhemina Wiggins Fernandez is the soprano. What's going on in this particular aria, Ebben? Ne Andro Lontana, is that a young woman's father, who is a compulsive gambler, basically offers her in marriage to someone he owns money. When she refuses to marry the creditor, her father banishes her from his household, and the song is her lament at perhaps never seeing her beloved homeland again. If you'd attended the actual opera, this information would've been in your program. The relationship between the diva and one of her fans, who surreptitiously records her performance, an act which engenders unforeseen consequences.

Chariots of Fire. Not only an inspiring movie, but the filming is from an era when steam still ruled the rails and waves, and steam made several cameo appearances.

The first three Star Wars Movies. Some steam/rail related videos make up the rest of my favorites.

We hardly ever go to the movies, and only do so at Movie Tavern. But, we did go see Toy Story 3 over the Fourth of July weekend. A very good movie for adults and kids alike.

Last movie I saw in theater was Avatar - mediocre story, but amazing visuals/3D. Totally worth it.

Some of my favorites of recent...

(all on Blu Ray)

Up (if this movie doesn't make you tear up, you're not human)
Speed Racer
Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace
The Prestige
Both Transformers movies
The new Star Trek
Planet Earth HD

So many others. :)

Yup, it's me. :) :wavey:

Also - I'm really wanting to see Inception. By all accounts, it's an amazing movie - and I love everything Christopher Nolan has done (Memento, The Prestige, the new Batman movies...).

Just watching "Good Bye, Lenin!" on TV.

If you want to get even the slightest impression of life in East Germany and the reunification time in 1990 watch this sad-funny movie. A bit of the fun might be harder to grasp if you don't have the background knowledge, but the rest should be a-ok. :)

I hope there's a dubbed version of the movie out there, otherwise it's subtitle time...

Every year, without fail, I watch two movies I've always enjoyed. "The Quiet Man" to remind me how beautiful was Maureen O'Hara and how good John Wayne was as John Wayne. The other is "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn, Rosemary Dehavilland, Basil Rathbone and the gang. These films are timeless.

#1 - Avatar
#2 - Serenity

Then a few randoms from my collection...
Quigly Down Under
The Chronicles of Riddick
The Highlander
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
An American Werewolf In London

Oh, and a line from another favorite: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
