Attached Photo is Paul's Domingue's Duck (repaint) at the cat in prep for a launch. Shift + U then Shift + I doesn't make the shooter squat and give the launch signal. So, that being said, what
key combo's or whatever is needed to cat launch this bird? I can deck launch him from where you see it in photo. Is there a launch entry in the AIRCRAFT.CFG that needs to be added?

You can't cat launch a tail dragger with acceleration. There may be an external program that can do it like Arrestor Cables but the wings will probably rip off. :mixedsmi:

Well, I launched with Piglett's A1H Skyraider. Isn't that considered a tail dragger?

You have to modify the aircraft config. Something like the below lines which I use in my VS TBF.
Sometimes you have to fiddle with the numbers to get it to work right.

Just add this to your config. to get you started.

[launch_assistance]
launch_bar_pivot = 5.41,0.00,-2.0
launch_bar_lug = 10.083333,0.00,-7.50

My bad. I think it won't work with a stationary carrier but will with an AI carrier. Why would you want to cat launch any aircraft that can normally fly off the deck?

I found this site to be very informative.

I came across it when researching how to setup (e.g., trying to understand) the various Vertigo Studios aircraft to land and launch from their CV-6 Enterprise.

Yes, you can launch taildragger aircraft via the Acceleration catapult system - most if not all WWII carrier fighters/attack/bomber aircraft, that I'm aware of, had provisions for catapult launches. As GradyHappyG mentions, you'll need to add a [Launch_Assistance] entry to the aircraft's Aircraft.cfg file to make it work.

A super important item too, that really must be done if you are going to be cat-launching any period aircraft other than a modern heavy military aircraft, is a modification to your FSX.cfg file (if you have Acceleration).

1. Open your FSX.cfg file, and find the section that is titled [REALISM]
2. Underneath that/within this section of the FSX.cfg file, add the line: CatapultForceLimiter=0

This can make an incredible difference. What this does is it unlocks the Acceleration default-set catapult force, which is established for only heavy, modern, military jets. Once this is set at "0", FSX will actually take into consideration the details of the aircraft you have loaded, and only supply the amount of force needed to get the aircraft off the deck with enough speed. When working on the Warbirdsim Navy-modifed P-51D (which comes fully setup for catapult launches, just as the original did), I found that this modification of the FSX.cfg file was especially critical, as it was the difference between the catapult launching the aircraft at 300 mph off the deck, to a much more accurate 130-140 mph. This has also been brought up with aircraft like the Flying Stations carrier based aircraft - Swordfish, Sea Fury, and Wyvern. Even when you are operating lighter jets from carriers, like the T-45, it provides more accurate cat speeds than if left as default.

No offense here and I'm sorry, but cat launching a biplane just looks...so...wrong :d

N.

I don't see anything wrong...

It's just more fun to get shot off the deck than to lumber off the deck. Even in aircraft that can take off on their own most of the time I use the Cat.

Before this post I was wondering if it could be possible to set this up in Acceleration with an AI battleship for the SC-1 model I'm working on or any other seaplane model of the era that was launched this way. If it can be done I was going to ask around for some battleship mesh (maybe one of PutPut's models) and build the fantail cats. Although I don't know if the aircraft could be placed on the fantail cat and made a saved flight like some do on the AI carriers. Just something to think about. :kilroy:

I did this back in FS 2004 using ...was it Lee Swordy's Traffic Tools?....
For my personal use I "created a little runway or airport" on top of a static Battleship's catapult that were between the "Stacks". It had a shadow on the catapult that I did not know how to get rid of.

I think I used the "3-wire" program or something to launch. God the memory is fading fast.
Anyway I've not dabbled with any intensive modifications to any version of MS Flightsim since then.
I did use an Amphibian like Tim's "Piglet" aircraft like in the pics above. :salute:

Good point. I can envisage using a static ship rather then an AI which would simplify to some extent the placing of the aircraft. Then set it in Roger-Wilco-66's Solomon scenery. I'm adding this to my list of things to work on.

I did a model of the USS Idaho a while back that has a model of the Navy P-6 catapult. It is a static model. The catapult has a hard surface (not visible) from which you can catapult any sea plane equipped with Rob Barendregt's rcbco-30 carrier ops gauges. Here is my rendition of the Curtiss SC-1 coming off the catapult. PS: the shadow disappears when the plane is over water.

Best, Paul

I should have known you had already done it. I'm going to have to think long and hard to come up with something you haven't done Paul. :mix-smi:

That's easy; I'm having a h--- of a time trying to get comfy with gmax!!

View attachment 88465I do have a AI Carriers version of Paul`s Idaho, I`ve been meaning to see if I can enable an Acceleration catapult. The difficulty is in
1)getting on the cat
2)staying on the cat with the ship moving
...more latter.
With all the `phibs and boats coming, something for big boat drivers. Its a bit over sized on purpose, I`ve some smaller versions like you see Convairs had in San Diego in back in the seaplane days, and just found some photos of a single seaplane sized stern loading Flying boat handling barge used by the US Navy to schlepp Canso`s and Mariners around. I`m just re doing textures and AIcarrier config now that I`ve got HMS Pegasus, LST`s and LSM`s in sim. Will be in WWI, WWII, and post-`46 British, IJNS, KMS, and USN versions.
