What Sim???

Mick

SOH-CM-2025
I just took a look at the new resources page and I noticed that the titles of most of the items posted offer no clue as to what sim those items are meant for. I had to scroll halfway down the page to finally find some that presented that information.

With some thought and consideration I could figure out what sim some of the items were for. For others I suppose it might be mentioned somewhere in the description if I were to click and open the page for each individual listing. Doable, but time consuming and annoying.

I haven't had anything to upload since the site modernization, so I don't know if there's a question about what sim in the upload process but apparently not, or if it exists it can certainly be skipped.

I have no expertise in web site development so I don't know if this is a reasonable suggestion, but could a question, or a line of check boxes be added and it made so that the item won't go up the pipe without an answer to the question?

When you upload an item (aircraft, repaint, scenery, etc.) you are presented with a menu where you can choose what category you want to upload to. This is the first thing you see after you click on the 'Add Resource' button. Click on the required category and you will be taken to the upload page for that section. Fill out the boxes with the necessary information, add your zip file and upload.

If you are looking to download a specific type of item for a specific sim then simply click on the 'Resources' tab at the top of this page and then in the top left corner of the next page there is a whole menu under 'Categories', just drill down the menu items until you find the category you require.

You were probably just looking at the main section of the 'Resources' page which shows the latest files, in the order they were uploaded, with the newest files at the top.

Hope that helps.

I also like the new format & it looks quite modern.
I've found it quite easy to find what I'm looking for, once I've explored the options.

Just had a quick look, seems clear to me

On a more general point, im liking the new format now im getting the hang of it

Glad you are finding your way around Ian, but you might want to check your 'Conversations' (used to be known as PMs) as it looks like you have NINE unread!

Ah, I see! But I just barely see. The sim is noted in such light gray against the white background that my tired, aging eyes completely missed it. Now I know where to look.

That's why drilling down in the 'Categories' menu until you get to the specific section you require is often the best way of narrowing the search ... or .... use the very effective search function built into the new forum. If you click on 'Resources' at the top of this page and then 'Search Resources' in the menu bar you can rapidly find what you are looking for with a combination of key words and menu selections.

That's great if you only want to see uploads for one particular sim. Or, it would be great if so many aircraft and sceneries only worked in the one sim they were developed for. I suppose there are some folks who would never consider, for example, putting a CFS2 plane into FS9. I don't know anyone like that but there are probably some.

With the search function you can search in multiple sim categories (i.e. CFS2, CFS3, FS2004, FSX, etc.) or specific types within a sim (i.e. CFS2 Warbirds, CFS3 Warbirds, FS2004 Warbirds, FSX Warbirds, etc.). You can select a single line or shift-click a consecutive group of categories or you can control-click multiple single (non-consecutive) categories. The search engine is very powerful and makes the job of finding files so much easier.

Lest say, for instance, you want a Spitfire MK1, you would enter that into the 'Keywords:' line of the search page and the scroll down to the 'Search in categories:' section and click, shift-click and/or control click to make your selections of where you want the search to take place. When you are happy with your selection(s) click the 'Search' button at the bottom of the page and voila anything found will be displayed.

You can of course select 'All categories' at the very top of the 'Search in categories:' section and it will search the entire database but that might take a while and is pointless if you already know (or can guess) what section(s) the file might be lurking in.

@Mick I darkened the text and made the small text 1 point bigger. Let me know if it helps.

Mick sorry but the new software doesn't do files in multiple categories. There's is no way for us to change that issue or at least no easy way right now. This is what we have.

Well, the other day I went looking for something in the library and I found it. I often had great trouble finding things in the old library, so this seems better.

As for the new releases, the Latest Resources page that comes up from the link in the left column of the home page shows all the latest for all the sims, so that's good.

Something that has me scratching my head is that the images on the upload page are square, and they appear to be cropped from wider aspect pictures so that the noses and tails of the planes are cropped off. I see the same thing on FlightSim. Curious. We'll have to remember to make square images for our uploads. Not a problem, but curiously odd. Or oddly curious.

That is just a thumbnail which is automatically cropped from the uploaded image. If you click on the text link or the square icon it opens up the information page for that file where the image is shown in full.
