Who used Bortdafarm's Scapa Flow scenery?

Has someone used the Scapa Flow scenery done by Chris Benson (aka Brotdafarm) and uploaded here by Ian Elliot in 2024? What were the experiences made wiith this addon? Thanks for any eventual comment.

Ive installed it a while back, its a good idea but the texture's of the ships could be more prominent, from a distance they just look like white or grey undetailed shape's, some of the ships are nicely modelled and a good variety, but you dont notice until your almost on top of them

Ian, thanks for your reply. It's just what I wanted to hear. I think the texture files aren't compatible with FS9. Really anoying as the ships are well done. I sent a message to Chris Benson, but up to now I didn't go any reply. It's a bit curious that based on his propre offfer, the scenery should be suitable for FS2002 and 2004. Obviously it hasn't been tested before release. The ships are simply untextured. It’s a shame, for once someone is making an effort to expand a bit the WWI era.

@leuen in the ScapaFlow scenery, note that the impair02.bmp and metal08a.bmp bitmaps in the texture folder are in 256 Colours unlike the remaining that are already saved as DXT3. Anyhow, open the above said texture bitmaps in Martin Wright's DXTBmp and save them as DXT3 type and then reload the scenery in the sim - ought to help, somewhat, I suppose!

cheers!

wolfebee, I appreciate your support and help. I followed your tip, but it didn't changed anything. The objects still remain untextured. Only the wood deck of the Argus carrier has a kind of texture. Really, no idea what the author was thinking!

as @ian elliot puts it and as I likewise can say, it is not necessarily un-textured as much as simplistically textured with a single grey-white? metallic bitmap for the entire vessel and for nearly all vessels (with exception of the deck), with the modelled details not necessarily showing unless you are rather near the vessel

there is also a slightly darker variation of the metallic bitmap meant for other vessels, and so I dunno, perhaps try either using a paint editor i.e. the likes of https://paint.net/ together with Martin Wright's DXTbmp to modify/play around with to darken the relevant grey-white bitmaps as you best see fit and to your liking - levels, shadows, highlights, exposure, contrast - potentially improving/darkening the splodges of metallic grey, or even better, simply use the singular said already darkened metallic bitmap metal08b.bmp in the texture folder for all the vessels - so a simple copy/paste and renaming and replacing the grey-white - impair02.bmp and metal08a.bmp texture files - see if that helps!

Note, the scenery was released for FS2002, way back when, and I am uncertain if Bortdafarm is still around and simming, to respond....

The scenery works well in CFS2, In fact, I did the screenshot in CFS2 for the FS2004 download.

Thanks to both, I eventually will replace the initial ships by static CFS2 ones. At least HMS Argus is available here. It's correct, that the scenery was planned for FS2002, but Chris Benson added Afcads for FS2004 too. So I assume that the author intended to make it usuable for FS2004 as well. BTW, he is still virtual member since May 2026.

@leuen as a further heads-up, should you perhaps re-consider and in keeping with the default spirit, choose to edit and darken - bring out the metallic greys in the aforesaid grey-white texture bitmaps in Bortdafarm's Scapaflow, then note that as both the originals are in 256 colours, they are apparently editable in the default Microsoft Photos in Windows 10.

Accordingly, under the adjustments tab in MS Photos, modify as you best see fit - vis-a-vis moving the parameter sliders until you find (with instant preview) the right amount of grey splashes in the pertinent base bitmap, and thereafter save, and then open in Martin Wright's DXTBmp and save as DXT3 - now you can reload the scenery in the sim and you are good to fly...

edit: per above, attached a set of modified metallic grey-white textures - perchance useful...

bons vols!

Hi wolfebee,

Many thanks for the great effort and willingness to help. As always, BTW. The two files will certainly bring about some improvement, but there are still numerous parts left without textures. The difference compared to the screenshot from the scenery presentation remains huge. So as previously mentioned, I moe added CFS2 ships as static traffic. They use all the positions originally defined by Chris Benson. There are 23 ships in total. Thr HMS Argus here in front.

quick question:
Is the USS Oriskany included in that package as well? I was looking for a standalone addon for FS2004 of the USS Oriskany but couldn’t find any… I only found a USS Wolverine Addon… which does look kinda similar to USS Oriskany… with the same rusty deck…

but does anybody know if there’s any standalone addon of the USS Oriskany?

USS Oriskany pertains to post-WWII era and is American, while the Scapa Flow package pertains to WWI Britain & Empire, circa 1918 --> so nope, not included; included are the WWI era British carriers HMS Vindictive, HMS Argus, and HMS Hermes

For CFS2 (potentially FS2004 compatible with the relevant modifications?), USS Oriskany by Gacek and Lindsay Watt available right here @ SOH https://www.sim-outhouse.org/freeflight/Vietnam_Projects_2.html

Exactly, but no one can remember it, except you, of course! Thanks for such attention.

for sake of interest: the WWII era 1937 Ark Royal GMAX model by Dino Carancini & Maurizio Laurenti for FS2002 - presumably compatible with FS2004 https://web.archive.org/web/20050214091150/http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/rufus_368/cfs2.htm

and @leuen an excellent resource, pertaining to WWII era ships for CFS2 https://simviation.com/lair/cfs2shipyard.htm
