Windows 10/11 snafu / content thread

Sdc ; Thank you for that info.:) At least now I will be a blind man with glasses walking through this minefield of Win11. At least I will have some tape to follow ... Response much appreciated.

@SdC When you installed the DirectX Runtime what version did you use and things like that.
When you run the web-installer in the link I posted, it's for all older versions combined. Just select the language and click download.

I doubt it will help in the case of CFS2 as that is on DirectX 7 and that's not explicitly mentioned in the versions. But it definitely won't hurt.

From what I know DX9 was backward compatible to DX6 (CFS1). I think some PCs are now shipping with out DX9 so thing are going to hell in a hand basket for them.

Also if someone feels like some reading I have put this together, Know Bugs and Oddities with CFS2. :)

Yo Allen;
Many Thanks for your tutorial. I've read it, but will need to reread it several times to fully digest all the info.
Although I found a few details that have caused me to respond today.

I have been flying CFS2 since 2005. Starting with XP Pro.
Been installing Windows & Linux since 2007

Installed XP Pro more times than I can remember.
- Win7 Ultimate x64 at least 60+ times.
- Win8.1 about a dozen times (I was an Inner Ring tester for MS on Win8.0)
- Win10 Pro, about 30-40 times
- Win11 Pro, about 15 times (all installs eventually failed due to obsolete, non Win11 compatible CPU)

I installed CFS2 6 times in the various Win11 installs.
3 installs from the disks and 3 times I just dropped in full folder complete installs.

In ALL THESE INSTALLS ... CFS2 RAN FLAWLESSLY. Even if Win11 was not running @ 100%.

Have never found the need to add ANY of the DDraw etc. add-on programs that you suggest.
I don't know WHY? But I do not create scenery or planes; nor build missions .. which is most likely the reason.

I have NEVER owned or run CFS2 on a PC with a "factory installed o/s".
I am beginning to suspect that the crux of the issues seems to be with "store purchased" PCs.

1) UAC (User Account Control)
In a new install (Win anything) the 1st thing I do is SHUT THAT ANNOYING CRAP OFF.
Then turn off "Smart Screen".
Then set Power Options to "High Performance".

2) Not sure if it makes a difference here, but I always set the new o/s to "Local Account" NEVER "MS Account".
Why? Because I value my privacy and do not appreciate having Microsoft "monitor" what I do, where I go on the internet & have access to my personal data & info.
All MS collected telemetry is manually set to "minimum".
I NEVER USE MS EDGE.
Been using Firefox since V1.5 (2005 - my 1st ever download)
It is the safest & most secure browser on Planet Earth.

Again, MANY THANKS for the tutorial.
I plan to deeply study everything you mentioned.

Hi @Dirtman, interesting to read your background on that. I'm a Windows sysadmin by profession, and have installed Windows more times than I care to remember. Store bought installs (=OEM image) are actually what I'm using privately right now, I don't bother building/installing my own crap any more; there's functionally absolutely no difference from a "running a game" perspective if you run a vanilla or OEM windows.

I think the difference is in support for DX7 on newer video card drivers, that warrants the need for DDrawCompat in some (=my) cases. Happyfor you that you managed without it so far, but it's just good there's a fix for people who can't enable hardware acceleration

1. UAC, I certainly don't switch it off. I can't have my main PC vulnerable to drive-by installs from the web; I would strongly advise people who use their PC for more than just games to keep UAC on. Just install the games you need to mess with in a folder outside the UAC protected zone, C:\Games\cfs2 or something. How many times a month do you run installers that pop-up UAC, for it to be so annoying that you rather drop that last line of defense when you are operating your PC with an Administrator account?
2. Local account is good.

I hope you share if it helped or not.

1. I need to find my disks and dust off my external disk drive.
2. Hiede, I have to watch that video a couple more times. The narrator speaks so quickly that my 331/3 RPM brain can't absorb and process it all in one or two passes. :dizzy:
3. I have followed all the other above instructions and installed the recommended downloads, but am still grounded.

On the video Hiede posted, from start to 2:12 is done as the guy can't get CFS2s install program to know he changes to Disk 2 during the install. This may be from using some sort of virtual CD mount program as he man not have a real CD drive or Windows 11 has broken CFS2 installer. He is copying all of the files from the 2 CDs on to his PC than letting CFS2 installer run.

Than he breaks one of are well know rules. He used the default install location. Next he is dropping in the CFS2 No CD patch. After that he uses compatibly mode of XP Service Pack 2 and goes into Change High DPI Settings and checks both boxes. This is new as I have never seen this done before. Not sure what it dose.

Compatibility mode does nothing for CFS2. That guy has bad habits.

By "grounded" I mean the sim ctd whenever I try to change aircraft or start Free Flight, try to load a mission in Missions or in MB.

Our gaming computers are Win 7 and XP,I even have one Win 98 for some older games. All 3 work fine for gaming. My personal computer has Win 11 but I use it for other things. I posted the video hoping it might help someone.

Win 10 gave you some problems with CFS2 and you get a new computer with Win 11 which causes problems.Just doesn't make sense.

Hiede

:ROFLMAO: in those terms, where are you at in the preflight- or takeoff-checklist?
Okay, for clarity: I start the sim and (for example) I choose the Free Flight tab. There I select the tab to change aircraft. The window opens, nothing shows in the preview window and a few seconds later, the sim closes without warning and I'm back on desktop.

The same thing happens when I elect t fly the aircraft, already selected. I see myself on the runway and before I can start my engine, poof CTD. It also happens when I try to fly in Single Missions or if I try to start a mission in MB.

Hiede: 7 works fine as does 10. So far, 11 is a bust. That is a new 11 system, not an upgraded 10.

Cheers:

I knew it was a new system, you seem to get a new one every few years.

Howdy Shadow Wolf. When you are running CFS2, are you in full screen, or windowed view?
