Well at least M$ announces that its being preinstalled into off the shelf computers and the disk will be ready for shipping in August...

So...Its on its way to a retailer and store near you...:kilroy:

has anyone here been using the trial windows 7 until now? how is compatibility with FSX?

i am thinking of going from vista 32 bit to windows 7 64, and was wondering if i will have any performance gains?

I have used it for a while....

I had no problems at all...It is said to have some performance gains. but on a decent rig I think you will not notice it..But there are no downfalls with it and FSX that I have seen....

There may be a carrier add on that is affected maybe...

I have not tried it yet but from everything I read it will (allegedly) be a lot less buggy than Vista and a good match for i7's with FSX especially if running 6 GB of RAM, if memory serves me right - and I'm not getting any younger. I'll still wait until the inevitable Service Pack 1 is released before considering a move, I just got use to Vista64 after a year of tearing hair out and have FSX running as smoothly and reliably as I've ever experienced at present. It appears it will not be a cure for FSX performance or functional issues and those already on a 64 bit OS probably won't gain much if anything in FSX from a switch. Anyway, that seems to be a concensus from my readings at various forums.

I am using the W7/64 and really like it. I have also used the 32 bit with no problems also. I currently have the 64 bit installed and FSX works fine with no problems, matter of fact 95% of the software I reinstalled on it works fine. I have not pre ordered the new OS cus this one I am using is good till 2010 and works fine right now.

I’ve been using the 64-bit version for a few weeks. It’s far, far better than the 32-bit <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />Vista that I was using before. It makes my old rig seem like a new computer when running FSX. I’m never going back.

Ditto,

Running Windows7 64 bit and 8gig of RAM and FSX is perfect. All I need now is to upgrade the CPU and I'll have FSX the best it's ever been. Like Moe, I haven't pre-ordered either as this RC is good til 2010.

Ed,

How's the ground textures loading when flying a fast jet? Do you run any decent 32-bit graphics editors on it, and how are they running?

Thanks

Dag, The biggest improvement has been the textures. I no longer see blurries, textures are crisp and I can look out in the distance in spot view and rarely see any textures having to load as I come closer. A lot more detail in the texturing also. . .I think the first place I noticed that was the rwys. When I moved to 64bit, there seemed to be a slight increase in FPS and the move from 4gig to 8gig has helped as well, but I suspect that a faster CPU (my current CPU is 2.9ghz) will see the biggest increase in that area. I also run the 64bit version of NHancer for the NVidia card I have and it has really performed quite well.

Been running the 64 bit RTM for several days now, with 6GB ram and the 3.7ghz OC. All in all, FSX is superb. Most settings maxed including water reflections, DX10 mode is on and so is light bloom and I'm still getting 30fps over New York City. :)

Dag, I stepped up from XP Pro 32-bit to W7 64-bit. By far the biggest gain I've seen is in Photoshop CS2. It runs like a scalded cat now that I can take advantage of my 6GB of RAM. File open/save times have gone down considerably, as have math-intensive operations like lighting effects. Big thumbs-up from me.

Ed, Datter, Bill, thanks much for the input. I have so many pros now that I will move to win 7. I have an HD4870, I wonder if it will perform good?? I used to run twin 8800GTX but actually downgraded to the 4870. The 4870 gives me better frames than the 8800 GTX in FSX but I still have the blurries. This is probably giving Mathijs' even more weight on his "data draining" theory of how FSX behaves.
My current OS is Win Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

Thanks again

I don't have a 4870 so I can't say for sure how it will work, but until this past weekend, I was running an 8800 GT (512MB) card in W7, and FSX performed admirably well. On Saturday, I picked up a new GTX 285 (1GB) card. Wow, the difference! It's not so much that the frame rates were higher, but they're now much steadier, with almost no stuttering. I find Mathijs's conclusions about FSX and data draining a little dubious, especially in light of my recent experience.

That 4870 will rock FSX..

I have built several with 4890's and they rock too..

I run on two computers each a 3850's and they rock....

Blurries IMO are not from a video card..just needs to set things up better...I have no blurries with any 3850 or 4890 cards...

I liked it but my ISP provided virus checker didn't, upon every boot I had to OK the same sys file upwards of 30 times, and intermittently thereafter. Went back to Vista64 before I pulled my hair out, but when the ISP catches up I will certainly buy the full W7. It was fast, stable and ran FSX very well. There were one or two things I didn't like at first but that was just unfamiliarity.
