Have you tried running your version of Excel under W7's compatibility mode?

You may be able to sidestep that issue by switching to one of the Vista or XP modes available.

My old Excel97 was one of the first utility items I loaded into W7 a couple of months ago. I have some very old and very basic spreadsheets that I use on a regular basis and I haven't run into any problems so far.

I haven't had to use one of the compatibility modes yet, but that might be to the simpler nature of both my older version of Excel and formulae.

I'm running the newest version of Excel (2007) so I wouldn't think a compatibility mode would be necessary. The strangest thing is that it seems to be time related. The spreadsheet works fine for a while. I typically do a ctrl-s frequently to save. After a while I get the sharing violation and Excel tries to save it under a temporary name, fails, then tries to repair the spreadsheet. The repair fails and the only way to save it is to copy & paste it into a new copy of the template.

I would hope that Excel 2007 is compatible with Win7, but M$ does work in mysterious ways :eek:)
 
I'm not sure I would rule out anything with W7.

I have some newer utility software and games that don't seem to get along with W7, but yet my Windows 3.1 version of Quickbooks loaded right up and runs like a champ. :)

I would except I do a lot of things with VBA. The templates I use are for estimating rebar. The VBA code handles everything from simple things like cursor movement to converting weights in imperial or metric and error trapping. I can't do those things in Open Office. With VBA, the spreadsheet recalcs things fast, even on jobs where the estimate is broken down into hundreds of separate prices and the takeoff is 10,000 line items. I have some screen shots of a basic version of my spreadsheet here. The full version that I generally use handles pricing and unit pricing breakdowns.
 
Strange, I've had no issues with Excel '07 in Win 7, although admittedly my spreadsheets aren't as complicated as yours. Have you tried some some of the Win 7 forums to see if it's a known issue?
 
No, I haven't checked forums. It's one of those things where I'd rather run it under XP (known quantity) than experiment. I'll give it another shot when W7 is released. I'm setup for dual boot so it isn't a problem to run XP for work and W7 for play. Of course, any incompatibility with Excel and W7 doesn't speak highly of W7's chances with businesses.
 
Always try to keep in mind that a release candidate is nothing more than beta. As catastrophic and terrifying as it is to some people around here, there are those of us using the RTM and can reassure the RC people that a lot of your problems (Excel and otherwise) will go away when you've got a final build.

You may now commence freaking out at my mention of the RTM.
 
Hey! I'm thinking about upgrading my OS from XP to a newer one since I've just discovered my graphics card supports DirectX 10.

However, I keep reading people having 6gb of ram here, and 8gb of ram there. I'm using a laptop with 2gb of ram and a 512MB Quadro 570M graphics card on a 200gb hard disk, powered by an Intel T9300 (2.53Ghz). Is it wise for me to switch to Windows 7 64-bit? Or will Windows 7 have a hard time keeping it's head from going under because I have so little (relatively speaking) RAM?
 
Upgrading solely to get DirectX 10 seems a bit hasty to me. Especially if you're mainly interested in FSX. Ive tried DX10 in FSX and, at least for me, the disadvantages are not worth the advantages over DX9.
 
Win 7 runs great in 2GB of RAM -- as good as XP. (It actually runs well on 1GB netbooks.)

Assuming you use our laptop for other things besides FS, you'll find a ton of cool stuff in Win 7 vs. XP. Well worth the upgrade, even if you don't find DX10 under FS to your taste.
