[WIP] Laos 1968 - Lima Site Pack 1

Wow

Mark,
As 1 that has spent alot of time flying in and out of there,i have to say you nailed it. Looks just like i remembered it. Nicely done sir!!!

DL,

the first pack will cover the immediate area around Long Tieng, then I'll move up to the PDJ or better all of the military region II, V and I, to cover the north. The first pack is rather small because LS-20a is very complex and time consuming. The smaller lima sites of other areas are faster to develop and the successive packs will contain more of them.

There are many good books on the subject, in fact, reading them inspired me to do these sceneries. I think I have most books that were written about the "secret" war in Laos in the aviation context. Right now I read the Raven Chronicles, which present an immense load of information, expecially about Long Tieng. I also researched at the University of Texas which hosts a lot of declassified CIA and Air America material about the subject. Anything that sticks to my brain and can be used as reference to the scenery is considered in the project.

Cheers,
Mark

Just wickedly exciting good news, Mark. Nice that you're doing some of the Laotian RP areas - between the MV F-100, F-4, and their upcoming F-105, as well as the existing A-4, F-8, and other FSX gems, the SEA will be a great destination for them - thanks to you for this.

Cheers,

dl

Oh wow, what a praise in such an early stage :) Thank you so much, this is very encouraging.

Sent you a PM!

Cheers,

My Ant T-28 came with a Lao livery, one that the Ravens flew, if I recall right!
Ditto on Marcel's Porter, although that model never flew in Laos and the dash will look modern. But it will be a treat anyhow.

Cheers,
Mark

In my T-28D model I have AD-496 which looks like a USAF SE Asia camo, but I was looking for a Royal Lao AF like Vang Pao's guys flew. You know the one with the dual elephant Lao logo on the fuselage. Does one of these repaints exist anywhere? It would be a nice tribute to the Hmong pilots.

On Marcel's Porter, I guess Air America might have been flying Fairchild Hiller Porters but Marcel's will have steam gauges and King radio so at least it won't be a glass cockpit and that's OK with me.

As for Marcels PC-6, I didn't know it is modeled with steam gauges! Great to hear! But I really must say I also love Piglets version. It's the Fairchild model and I fly it every other day in the moment.

Cheers,
Mark

Ah yes that's the one I was looking for!:applause: Mine is the payware T-28D package. Is yours the B/C package?

It's installed in the D package here, the texture designation must be texture.513531 or texture.521204 not sure. I'm also not sure anymore if it came with the package, but I don't have any reference that it was a seperate download. PM me if you want it!

Today I modeled the compound of the King's Palace, which sits on a little hill on the slope of the south western ridge of the Long Tieng valley. In the books it was stated that there were a couple of howitzers in the front yard of the palace facing the opposite ridge, they are duly part of the scenery. The sight from the palace was awesome, it overlooked the whole scenery of the bustling airfield and town. I will make a 3d model of the palace in the coming days to complete that part.
I also started to scatter little huts along the town roads. The large L shaped building is General Vang Paos villa and headquarter, on a fortified compound. The prominent ridge in the background is called "Skyline Ridge".

Way to go!

Mark, what mesh are you using for this gem? Is there any chance that it might be compatible with FSGlobal Ultimate Asia/Oceania? The main reasons I bought this mesh was to enjoy the rugged mountains of Laos and southern China.

Vora, the scenery is built upon FreemeshX Asia, which uses SRTM 3.0 LOD10 / 38 meter data. If your mesh resolution is anywhere in the range of 30meters I'm sure it will work. If it deviates too much the scenery can or will look utterly ugly.
That is because in this scenery the ground around Long Tieng, from the hills at the end of the runway, all the way down the valley is "terraformed" using the height of FreemeshX as a unique base reference.

Cheers,
Mark

Ultimate Asia allegedly has LOD 12 in Laos. I have Global 2010 to fall back to, but I don't know what LOD they have there.
Could you please give me the coordinates and direction for the screenshot above? I'd like to make a comparison between these meshes and your shot with FreemeshX.

Mark , your scenery design is so innovative and artistic and realistic . I could go on and on and on . We are all really looking forward to it . :applause:

Rich

Thanks, Rich!

Still working on the scatter huts. I have to increase the diversity of the 3d models in textures and sizes, and shapes to achieve that chaotic and austere look the Long Tieng (or Cheng, as locals spell it) village had.

This view is from the Air America /CIA pad.
