Local Legend 19: The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor

Well, nice, but the odd thing is the variant. The model actually depicts a D-2 version of the Fw200, i.e the late civilian version of the Luftwaffe C-variants. Only two aircraft were build in 1939 and never actually delivered to Lufthansa. These were D-ACWG "Holstein" (S/N 0020) and D-AMHL "Pommern" (S/N 0019). A third one - D-ASVX "Thüringen" - was planned, but never completed. The two completed ones were given to the Luftwaffe. "Holstein" became NA+WN and was eventually destroyed in a bomb attack on 13th April 1941. "Pommern" became F8+BU and was destroyed on the 22nd September 1944 in southern France.
So, the selection on the varaint appears somewhat odd and may potentially only be explained by the existance of a similar, recently restored Fw200 in Berlin, Germany (https://fw200-restaurierung-bremen.de/category/allgemein/). However, that actually is a C-3 version, which had an emergency ditching in Norway.
So, while I personally would have preferred an A-variant (the original civilian version that flew non-stop from Berlin to New York in 1938 - albeight with extra fuel tanks), I somewhat understand Oliver Moser falling back onto a more available model. There, I would probably have preferred a C-version over the rare D-2, but anyway. Another nice aircraft to fly in the sim!!
 
Gosh, that looks lovely. I would have liked the military maritime patrol version, but that is really gorgeous.

I just looked at the liveries, three different paints, one of which is bare metal, no airline markings at all. Given the politics surrounding that era, I suspect Microsoft was treading very lightly and expect producing a military version would be too much to ask.
 
Beautiful looking aircraft! I have a question for creators though, is it possible to model gravity pushing down on an aircraft model? I see so many aircraft in this sim to appear not have any weight compressing shocks or putting slight bulging on tires when rolling or stationary. I think if it's possible, it would add a lot more realism, thoughts?

Exactly my thoughts Bob. Especially annoying seeing a large tubeliner hit the runway with no shock compression. But we may be a minority. MS still doesn't have decent water physics with all of the seaplanes available, or a flyby camera. No expectation that this will be corrected in MS2024.

Yep, all the above. I would love to be able to create my own pilot characters too, much like you can in other sims but those you mention are my biggest peeves.
 
Believe it or not some time ago i saw screenshots of a WIP MSFS aircraft model that featured bulging tires. It looked fantastic. Dum enough i didn't pay too much attention to it, didn't copy the screenies :stupid: I don't remember the aircraft neither just that it (probabely) was GA. Screenshots... not a video. I figure bulging tires to replicate significant weight on them in a screenshot is one thing, seeing it on a taxiing aircraft is another...

I remember talking about it with Milton and he had a go at it but it never really materialised, simply not possible (pre MSFS that is). Since i saw the screenshots of these bulging tires, possibly about half a year ago, no GA aircraft sporting bulging tires has been released, atleast not to my knowledge. It might just be MSFS2024 for us to see some weight on the tires and oleo's....

The basic tire animation can fairly easily be done with a circular skin mesh animation tied to rotation and compression sim variables
The challenging part in FS would be to factor in aircraft attitude. The bulg will be more forward when the aircraft touches down during a landing as if it would be when parked. That's esspecially true for taildraggers.
Though, thinking of it, thatcan be done either, just that whole thing requires considerable ressources, both processor and programming-wise.
 
Back on the Condor....it got a lot of stick on the official forum for flight model, textures and particularly the wierd black prop blur, visible from the cockpit.
Luckily I'm away for a week so can't buy it for a while, by which time verdict should be in.
 
I like it so far, but yes, the sooty-black prop discs are dreadful, particularly when viewed from the cockpit. I know prop discs seem to be an issue with a number of aircraft in MSFS, but the Condor's problem is so obvious I wonder why it was released in that state. Other than that, I'm enjoying it, and absolutely greased my first landing, at Edwards KEDW.
 
Yes, all it would take would be to darken the alpha channel of the prop disc texture. How dark (transparent) would depend on an individual's choice/preference. I haven't purchased this aircraft myself, as I don't think it would get much use on my end.

If there's a civilian version of a certain plane, that's what you're likely to see from MS/Asobo, since this is ostensibly a civilian simulator. They will do everything they can to keep their ESRB "E" rating.

Actually the one with red stripe already reminds the Danish plane a bit.

True, I suppose. I had been perfectly happy with the 'no weapons' policy until the Condor came along. Ah well, at least we have something.

I would think having anything associated with WW2 Germany is a bit dicey. Even the Redwing LZ129 HINDENBURG, does not have the historically correct Nazi flag on it, instead it has the earlier flag of the German Empire.
 
I just took it for a kinda local hop, the fuel management is pretty interesting, being the "start" and "cruise" and "travel" tank sets.
Hopefully the guys that do awesome liveries for these planes comes through with a good Lufthansa and a hack maritime patrol WWII paintjob, the basic skins are pretty minimal and not in a way I particularly enjoy.
