P-47 Progress Thread

So much detail ,it is mind blowing ! What a labor of love for such a wonderful warbird as the P-47, my all time favorite aircraft !
 
Wow , that is detailed! Been a while but I remember complex animations can be nightmare in Gmax . If you get truly stuck you send me the relevant parts and I will take a look at it.
 
i can send you some money to get the work done. i'll pay you for it. Your passion and great love inspires me. Coming in to a bunch of money from the VA. will gladly pay you to finish the work !

But unfortunately I can't accept that offer for several reasons,; first of all it wouldn't be fair to all the other people that selflessly shared the fruits of their hobbies with us over time. Without their efforts we wouldn't have ETO, MAW, Korea etc. And all the community's CFS3 contents published for free over the years aside, I feel that Ankor's shaders are predominantly responsible for where CFS3 is now. And those are free too.
Secondly, the P-47's modeling and texturing may be my own but the air file isn't my doing and over time I received much help and support from more knowledgeable people than me. And eventually I hope that Daniel will wave his RSM-wand over the model and add some extra systems and realism to it.
In the third place, it would mean that it's no longer a tinker tanker pastime but a job. That would entitle you to customer rights, even if you don't want/mean to excercise them. And even if you wouldn't be by law, it would feel to me as if you were.

So, as much as I appreciate the gesture, I have to politely decline. But rest assured, I'll keep working on it :D. (But if you really want to part with your hard-earned savings, please consider donating during the next donation drive to keep your favorite hangout in the air (but I am sure you do/did(y))). Hope that's still OK with you, mate!?
 
Some new (and better) parts for the tail wheel lock mechanism; I finally managed to create a helix object that didn't crash gmax. Now there's a proper spring instead of a tube-that-would-be-painted-as-a-spring (but I may need to revert to this solution, as I haven't tried the helix ingame). The spring is of the correct gauge and has 39 coils, almost exactly like the blueprints prescribe (39 3/4, to be exact, but I had to make it fit the hooks too :p).

Of course, the spring isn't really stretchy because CFS3 doesn't work like that. Instead there probably will be two spring models that will trade places, depending on the position of the lever (which, for modeling purposes, is in a non-existant 'center' position. It should be either in the 'locked' or 'unlocked' position in the final version).

I'm sure I've seen an animated spring in one of the CFS3 cockpits. I can imagine that if you made it as a lot of unconnected rings set at an angle, then it could be animated from the installed length to compressed length.
 
Joost, how can you expect us to fly a P-47 with a tailwheel lock spring that only has 39 coils instead 39 3/4?! The nerve of some people! :p

Seriously impressive work and attention to detail! This plane is going to be amazing!
 
Wow! Especially the inflight scenes are very good. AI stuff? If so, this is one of the better applications of that Frankenstein's monster (;))
 
I checked out the guy's YT channel and also watched this video:
. I am truly impressed!! It's no longer the grainy war fought in black and white but it's as if you can almost touch it. The airbase scenes (both aerial and on the ground are fantastic) are very reminiscent of that 90s Memphis Belle movie (or the other way around): No CGI yet. That was a good find, MM!
 
Guys (and girls), what again is causing this error in the gmax exporter: "Error count indices more than 65535"??
I am creating a new object in the P-47's cockpit that causes this error on exporting. I tried exporting just the new object itself (roughly 15.000 polys) and even then I get that error. Now I haven't reduced the object to its visible polys only but would that be the solution??
