OT: I thought popcorn was supposed to be good for you?

Quote:
a medium popcorn and soft drink contained 1,160 calories and three days' worth — 60 grams — of saturated fat.

Eeeks! Stay away from popcorn.... Eat celery sticks instead! :icon_lol:

I only like the sweet version of popcorn anyways. The one with butter tastes too dull.

And is an american medium popcorn equal in size to an european one?

i refuse to buy snacks at the cinema, on the rare occasion that i go to one, i make microwave popcorn and put it in a ziplock bag. then i pin it into my coat. i carry a bottle of gatorade in my pocket. no way would i pay the kind of $$ they charge. it's just rediculous

If you eat popcorn without the 'oil', you will be fine.

:d

There for a while, I heard that alot of the 'butter' that they were serving in theaters was actually made of whale oil. This was a few years ago. As I think about it now, perhaps it was a lie, I dont know.

So many unhealthy things out there in this world....

My wife ran our local Cineplex as the Managing director up until she had back surgerey. They were not even allowed to call it butter. Had to call it topping because there isn't even a hint of real butter in the oil they put on top it......

Contributing to this is the fact that food portions are all "Super Sized" anymore. The bucket of popcorn used to be something you shared with the entire family.

if you read the comments, not everyone agrees with the article.
the only section i have any experience with is pizza. 25 years ago i worked for all the major shops back home.
when i last was there (3 years ago) only the prices had changed, and even those had't risen to what i thought was an unreasonable level. i could still go to the shop up the street and get a large plain pizza for about $7.

i do wonder about one thing though. now that all the boomers are middle aged or older, with slower metabolisms, that could be a factor. 25 years ago i weighed about 135. now i carry around 80 lbs more. maybe because there are more middle aged fat guys like me, we are skewing the numbers

If it weren't for the revenue they receive from the snackbar, most cinemas would go out of business quickly. They sure don't get enough income from ticket sales to begin covering their operating expenses... :pop4:

I can't stand movie theater pop corn..overly salted, overly oily. I like my popcorn air popped, no butter. Just plain, crunchy popcorn. Popcorn like that is a healthy, low calorie, high fiber, fat free snack. The stuff from the theaters and from those microwave bags...not worth eating.

Same here Cheesy. I don't buy their overpriced junk. I sneak my own it too, but I haven't been to a movie theater in 3 years. I wait for the DVD to come out for a movie I want to see.

You do realise the profit they make on a soda..... like 1000% or more on just a small alone. Cost to make a 12oz soda, for a vendor doing it outside of a theater, was 3 cents. Might be a penny or two more today tho.

Cheezy, its been very well documented over the past few years by researchers that portion sizes for many fast food outlets and chain restaurants have at least doubled if not tripled over the past couple decades. I'm glad to hear your pizza shop hasn't followed suit, that's great news. :applause:

Researchers have also found that on average many folks eat at this types of places for at least one meal a day, some two. Obesity is not just a problem in America anymore, this "fast food" lifestyle change in our respective diets as nations, is growing at a fearful rate overseas now too.

This has prompted the CDC to declare Obesity an epidemic and emergency. One of the main reasons for this declaration, the onset of Childhood Diabetes (type 2) in kids has spiked in the past decade. It has been directly tied to the changes in the average American family's eating habits.

All true. However, good luck just finding a 12oz soda anymore. The average 'small' soda is 24oz to 32oz at most theaters anymore. :kilroy:

Probably the most extreme example I have ever seen, was presented in the documentary called "Super Size Me". It's a rather one-sided affair with a negative slant towards the fast food industry, but does have some interesting research presented.

The premise of the documentary is that the film's creator is a very healthy young man, documented by 3 doctors in the film. His plan is to eat at only McDonalds for 30 days to see if it will affect his health. Well, DUH! :icon_lol:

The thing that stood out in my mind after seeing the film, is that he does indeed gain 25lbs in one month. But it takes him 14 months to lose all he gained, even with exercise. :kilroy:

Yup, if you pop it yourself and take it easy on the toppings, popcorn is a very healthy snack.
Myself, I still don't care for the air popper stuff. Too dry for me. I use a Stir Crazy with a bare minimum of usually Canola or Soy oil and my topping of choice is Chili Powder. (Don't knock it til ya try it...it's good!)

You are spot on Dain...except I'll correct ya that "childhood" diabetes is Type 1 not Type 2.
There are more cases of younger people being diagnosed with both Type 1 and Type 2.
1 is where your pancreas quits making insulin that combines with blood glucose to get into your cells as fuel. Without insulin, all that food (sugar/carbs/fat/etc...everything gets turned into blood glucose) just sits in your bloodstream and gradually poisons your system.
2 is where your body still produces insulin to process the glucose, but your cells "reject" the insulin/glucose fuel mixture. The opposite end of the spectrum from Type 1, but in the end it still winds up poisoning your system if you don't control it.

Type 2 usually appears later in life. This usually affects middle-aged or older folks, but is becoming more prevalent at a younger age now too (in many cases thanks to the super-size fastfood lifestyle).
It can many times be controlled simply with watching one's diet...if you don't, you'll wind up in rough shape.

Type 1 is an auto-immune disorder, and usually shows up at an early age, but not always. That's why this one is usually called childhood diabetes.
What specific triggers cause it really aren't known yet...there are many possibilities. At least that's the tale the medical community will tell ya. (let the conspiracy theorists unite! :d)

I was diagnosed as Type 1 a couple years ago at age 35, but looking back on how my body works I know it's been affecting me for at least 5 years before maybe longer...something triggered it to really get severe a couple years ago though. My pancreas just plain "petered out" almost completely so I'm pretty much dedicated to injections for the rest of my life.
Yep, it's been a learning experience!
Yeah, I still grab a burger & onion rings every now and then...but only if I know I'm gonna be moving around so I burn off all that fuel before it sticks to my waist and arteries. Hard work and exercise is still the most important part of using all that fuel you ingest in a big meal!

But...back to the popcorn.
If you stay away from the movie theater stuff, it is a very healthy snack food even for a diabetic. Instead of a handfull of doritos or other greasy chips I head for the popper instead. Less fat, less carbs, lotsa fiber...

Heck, even at the grocery stores or gas stations...
Used to be a 12oz can was the normal. Then it was the 16oz bottle. After a while the 16oz "magically" grew to 20oz. Then 24s and 1liters...
And we all go for the handiest, cheapest package so we wind up drinking about twice as much as we used to "for a quick thirst quencher".

Just to add my .02 cents worth,....no doubt about it, we're turning into a nation of fatties. Especially today's kids. Looking at some old black and white photos of family and friends from the 50's,....nearly every one was on the thin to average size. Now,....the average thin person or kid is the exception. Not the rule.
I'm sure most of you that have 5 decades of living under your belt remember as a kid...you'd go out and 'play' at the local park after school. Or ride your bike. That, until it got dark or knew supper time was coming up.
Today's kids head directly for the Playstation, X-Box,...or computer...ooops! Well, you get my point.
As Moparmike pointed out,...Type 1 diabetes usually onsets in childhood. Some kids are born with it,...others develop it through eating too much...usually the wrong stuff,...and living a sedentary life style. Again,...playing the video games.
When going out today to eat,...if one isn't served an over abundance of food,...he or she feels they're getting gypped. Heck, I do!

You are correct. I was commenting that young children are getting Type 2 these days. That's scary.

And the problem is even with exercise, we're not burning off the extra we need to lose thanks to the larger portions.

We've pretty much gone back to the "old days", when eating out was the rare treat. Make your own, and have leftovers. Amazing how many calories and $$$ you can save. Also amazing how we seemed to forget that over the years. :kilroy:

We go to a movie about 4 times a year...

We sneak in candy, buy popcorn and a drink..

We leave feeling like &^%%R and regret ever doing it...LOL

We all gonna drop someday...
