I can't stand movie theater pop corn..overly salted, overly oily. I like my popcorn air popped, no butter. Just plain, crunchy popcorn. Popcorn like that is a healthy, low calorie, high fiber, fat free snack. The stuff from the theaters and from those microwave bags...not worth eating.
OBIO
Yup, if you pop it yourself and take it easy on the toppings, popcorn is a very healthy snack.
Myself, I still don't care for the air popper stuff. Too dry for me. I use a Stir Crazy with a bare minimum of usually Canola or Soy oil and my topping of choice is Chili Powder. (Don't knock it til ya try it...it's good!)
Cheezy, its been very well documented over the past few years by researchers that portion sizes for many fast food outlets and chain restaurants have at least doubled if not tripled over the past couple decades. I'm glad to hear your pizza shop hasn't followed suit, that's great news.
Researchers have also found that on average many folks eat at this types of places for at least one meal a day, some two. Obesity is not just a problem in America anymore, this "fast food" lifestyle change in our respective diets as nations, is growing at a fearful rate overseas now too.
This has prompted the CDC to declare Obesity an epidemic and emergency. One of the main reasons for this declaration, the onset of Childhood Diabetes (type 2) in kids has spiked in the past decade. It has been directly tied to the changes in the average American family's eating habits.
You are spot on Dain...except I'll correct ya that "childhood" diabetes is Type 1 not Type 2.
There are more cases of younger people being diagnosed with both Type 1 and Type 2.
1 is where your pancreas quits making insulin that combines with blood glucose to get into your cells as fuel. Without insulin, all that food (sugar/carbs/fat/etc...everything gets turned into blood glucose) just sits in your bloodstream and gradually poisons your system.
2 is where your body still produces insulin to process the glucose, but your cells "reject" the insulin/glucose fuel mixture. The opposite end of the spectrum from Type 1, but in the end it still winds up poisoning your system if you don't control it.
Type 2 usually appears later in life. This usually affects middle-aged or older folks, but is becoming more prevalent at a younger age now too (in many cases thanks to the super-size fastfood lifestyle).
It can many times be controlled simply with watching one's diet...if you don't, you'll wind up in rough shape.
Type 1 is an auto-immune disorder, and usually shows up at an early age, but not always. That's why this one is usually called childhood diabetes.
What specific triggers cause it really aren't known yet...there are many possibilities. At least that's the tale the medical community will tell ya. (let the conspiracy theorists unite! :d)
I was diagnosed as Type 1 a couple years ago at age 35, but looking back on how my body works I know it's been affecting me for at least 5 years before maybe longer...something triggered it to really get severe a couple years ago though. My pancreas just plain "petered out" almost completely so I'm pretty much dedicated to injections for the rest of my life.
Yep, it's been a learning experience!
Yeah, I still grab a burger & onion rings every now and then...but only if I know I'm gonna be moving around so I burn off all that fuel before it sticks to my waist and arteries. Hard work and exercise is still the most important part of using all that fuel you ingest in a big meal!
But...back to the popcorn.
If you stay away from the movie theater stuff, it is a very healthy snack food even for a diabetic. Instead of a handfull of doritos or other greasy chips I head for the popper instead. Less fat, less carbs, lotsa fiber...
