2011 Race Event 1 - Southwest Pacific Tour

I also spent some time today researching the timing of the P-38M deliveries. My conclusion is the same as David's - technically it's probably out, but you could interpret it as possibly being legal. Seeing as it is quite a bit slower than some of the other aircraft in the fighter category, I'd hope it would be allowed. Either way, a definitive answer would be nice - even though there are several other fabulous aircraft to choose from.

The most definitive statement I can find is "The P-38L entered service in June 1944", so the L is in. I'm afraid the M can't qualify, even though it's really cool looking. :)

If you are going to require/use the GI Beans, don't forget your

I still carry mine in my key case. I also have several still in their Kraft Paper package.
I would not be without my P-38.. The one I carry is WWII era (it was from my Dad's stuff) and still opens cans like it was new! The still packaged ones are early Korean Conflict era.
I'll be manhandling a B-17 to these islands.. not sure if I'll do FS9 or FSX.. Ima Thinkin'..

Reporting for duty for fighter class with the Realair Spitfire XIV.
Been hoping to be able to fly that plane in an event for a long time. :jump:

Btw, have attached a small Google Earth file with the airports.

Entry notice

pilot: dcc
plane: Lockheed P-38H-5, 42-66845, '97' flown by Lt. Grover Fanning, 9th FS/49th FG out of Dobodura, Oct 1943
model: P-38H from my "P-38 Triple Play" ver 2.1, with 150 gal tanks

note: May is going to be a busy month for me in real life, so I may not make it to the end of the race

You won't be the only P-38 pilot in this race, David!

I'll be entering the fighter class; flying the Lockheed P-38G-13-LO, "Miss Virginia", from the 347th FG, 339th FS; based in Gaudalcanal. This is the airplane that participated in the famous "Yamamoto Mission" and finished off the Betty bomber that carried the Admiral. I will also be planning on running with the 150 gallon tanks.

Hey All,

I can't exactly tell from the rules. Is this event start and end at the same airport? Or not?

As for aircraft since the Mossie is out I'm thinking PE-2 in the bomber class (max GS as modeled is right at 333 or so mph).

No, it doesn't start and end at the same airport. The requirement is to land at each airport on the list. The order is up to you. It ends when you have landed at each required airport. Your first take off can be at any airport not on the list. Logically you would choose one that's sort of close to the airport you intend to land at first, since that first leg counts, but it's up to you.

I've flown some GAARs and DC3 Airways World Rallies but am new to this type of event. If you don't mind a newbie coming along I'm in hopefully to the end.

I think I'll stick with my trusty DC-3 and according to my initial flight planning I'm looking at 3000+ miles and about 18 hours and some change for flight time. Does that sound close or do I need to spend more time with the maps?

Have the Duenna installed and after a couple of test flights everything looks like it's working ok.

Hi propfan! Of course "newbies" are welcome. The more the merrier! It is, after all, about fun more than a serious "win at all costs" serious kind of thing. Your 3000+ NM sounds about right. As long as you initially take off from an airport not on the list, and then land at each airport on the list, you're good.

Looks like I'll be joining the fun. All set up to fly the Warbidsim P-51B in FSX. Now all I need to do is watch out for those really tall jungle trees that surround all these runways, sheesh! Ed

Welcome to the Outhouse, Ed!

Ed, what Pe-2 are you flying? Can't find one for FS9 out there. Is that a CFS2 conversion?

Ed, if you aren't aware, Jim Keir created two programs that do a bit of "trimming" of that vegetation.

FSX Scenery--Lumberjack, tree removal near runways. This set of files will remove trees near runways for every airport supplied as standard with FSX. Some rural airports have trees right up to the threshold, making them rather tricky to use! There are two versions of this archive, one called AGEXCL3X.ZIP and one called AGEXCL5X.ZIP. The first clears 3 times the runway width and the second clears 5 times the runway width. Both clear 1.5 times the runway length. By Jim Keir.

The RTWR has accepted their use and I'm sure the same applies here. You only need the 5X version

Thanks!!! I will definitely try this, those trees are scary!

Hey All,

The PE-2 is a CFS2 conversion with the flight model "retuned" by some guy named Fliger747. :wiggle: Don't recall the specifics of getting the plane as it was sometime ago - maybe Tom will know. Nice plane - quick and dives like a fighter (but then it was a dive bomber) - doesn't need a lot of runway when you know how to fly it. I especially like the Finnish paint.

well, i've been waffling back and forth
trying to decide,
the Alpha A-20 Boston/Havoc or the GA C-46,
the Commander or the Boston/Havoc.
much as i would like to haul cargo,
i figure i won't get much opportunity
to fly an A-20 in one of these events.
so A-20 Havoc it is, or Boston Mk.III, as it were.

now, if i could only find a South Pacific Theater skin.

btw, Paul, thanks for the AP/Nav panel

Smilo, I know what you mean. There were a few more that I was seriously considering but didn't have an appropriate Pacific Theater paint for from the required timeframe. And my first choice to fly was the WoP PB4Y-2 Privateer, but that didn't get into service until late 1944. Plus this event is more about how you get there than how fast you arrive. The A-20 should work just fine.

to be honest, i'm not that competitive,
i'm more interested in participating.

if i had my druthers,
i'd fly a C-119,
but it doesn't fit in the time frame.
so it goes

the A-20 has been a favorite for a very long time.
i mean jeez, it's in the CFS1 install screenie.
