2011 Race Event 1 - Southwest Pacific Tour

I wish to enter my dilly into this dally....

I will be flying the bomber class with the B-17F. With mention of shorter fields, this a/c does have tundra style tires for grass landings, i would think that a roll off the runway for a few more feet wont necessarily be a bad or devastating thing, perhaps a longer grass landing to the side of the pavement might be in order to let her roll out...

time for some test trials to see what she 'can' take for punishment with landing on adverse grounds.. she does land smooth... a nice a/c. might not be the fastest, but she can get along...

EasyEd, that gauge you were asking about in your post is a gauge by Glenn Copeland. Look for the file kildrft1.zip on flightsim.com to get the instructions. If you do a search on his name you'll find some interesting things he put together.

I plan on trying to use the drift7.zip file by Dave Bitzer. Probably a good thing I'll only need it for a couple of legs or so.

You mean the flight-slide-rule thing? Absolutely! We're trying to make the navigation a little more difficult than following the red line on the GPS. I initially wanted to outlaw drift gauges, and groud speed gauges as well, but decided at the last minute that might be pushing it a bit! :)
i hope this hasn't already been addressed;
is the RKG Fuel status gauge acceptable?
i can see how it wouldn't be,
but it sure is handy for those long flights.

We seriously considered banning that and similar gauges, as well as gauges that simply tell you your drift angle. But, for thus event those all those gauges are ok.

:wavey: Howdy!

I guess it's about time for me to commit to what aircraft I will fly in the up coming event. I will enter the bomber class flying, what I just had for lunch, A TURKEY sandwhich. Will be flying the MAAM TBF-1C.

I would vote for the dismissal of such gauges... Just me... Not a problem if they ARE allowed... Not for the sake of making it difficult for racers, but more-so for making us get the 'feel' of what pilots had to cope with in the days before gps and fancy navaids. I loved the MacRobertson race; NDB and an E6-B. it was great to see how well I did after an hour and a half of plotting to make sure i got the navaid where it 'should' be when i get in range... Just like pilots did then to get from here to there...

I don't mean to sound sappy, but I love the fact that we have to 'work' for our pudding when flying these period events... And we eventually learn something about rudimentary/early navigation.

Ive got my E6-B ready to go... (I suppose I may be cheating a little in 'getting' my wind info to use in the tool for course correction.... so I'm not judging anyone by any means, i jsut say we go old school and have fun with it... I know Austin (salt_air) is gunna be workin that sextant!!!)

One of the things we've found about the TWI windrift gauge, is that it's not that accurate. The farther you go following it, the more off course you can be. Ask Moses, I think he ended up in Buenos Aires when trying to cross the S. Atlantic to Natal using it.

I just figure it to be just a hair above Dead Reckoning. I've got it installed but don't use it half the time.

well, Ed, i have to agree with you 100%.
my problem is, i don't have an E6-B
and if i did, i don't know how to use one.
also, if i did have one, i don't think i could learn
how to use it in a week.

i've spent the day planning my route
and just for grins, i flew a leg.
being as i don't know the A-20
as well as i should, i am glad i did.
and i am glad i had the fuel stat gauge.
without it, i would have been in the drink
long before i reached my destination.
as it was, i throttled way back
and made it with 38 gallons to spare.
it sure was nice to hear
that ADF ident kick in at 75 nm out.
whew

i am still a bit undecided about
using the gauge in the event.
we shall see how it goes.
maybe i'll put it in a popup window
and just use it if i get really scared. :icon_eek:

i've got the TWI wind drift gauge,
but have never got it to work properly.
so i guess i'm sol there.

my next question is regarding
the Shift+Z longitude/latitude readout.
what do you all think about that?
i guess it could be justified
by calling it the navigator's readings.
i don't have a sextant
and don't know how to use one, anyway. :isadizzy:

all that said,
i think this is going to be
a heck of a lot of fun.
i am really looking forward to it.

it would be nice if we could
fly together on the SOH server,
but i guess it would be tough
not to look at where one is on the map.

Smilo, if Flight 19 follows it's usual methodology, we'll probably be on the server for this. I know I will be, but I've also got an extra stop planned just for fun.

Another thing is that it's possible that we could all be flying different routes. I've already got mine set up a flight plan and ready to go.

there's no doubt
that we'll be flying different routes,
but it would be fun to make contact now and then.
i'll be looking for ya.

i made three flight plans
and finally settled on the one.
i hope i made the right choice,
although, everything is subject to change.

so, an extra "just for fun" stop, aye?
let me guess,
there wouldn't be a carrier involved,
would there?
somewhere around N04 E129,
maybe?

Here's my FS9 entry. Lets see if I can make it to the CPO mess on that carrier Willy is headed to without bending this plane more than it already is...

Which one? There's 3 of 'em along my route. I'm intending on a lot of coffee and donuts. :icon_lol:

This will give me a chance to go back to a favorite - Dave Copley's P-38.

I'll be in P-38J-15-LO "Marge" which did much of it's active service in the area of this event.

By and large navigation doesn't look to be too difficult - until the long leg toward the Philippines.
