A Lockheed "Rounder"

just added some black protective leading edges (can also double as de-icing boots if needed/ you add a switch to your cockpits :icon_lol:)

I was looking at Matt's latest canary bird and started thinking, "hmm...why is it I can never find a photo of a Poon with boots?" Surely there are photos showing the de-icer boots, especially on those based on Attu and other cold weather areas. Well a scan though Taigh Ramey's thread over at WIX cleared the mystery up:

"One nice thing about the PV-2 was its hot leading edge de-ice system. It was innovative for WWII and is still in use today. I wonder if the Harpoon may have been one of the very first aircraft to use heat instead of pneumatic boots.

The engine exhaust system had a heat exchanger which allowed hot air to be fed through ducting in the leading edges of the wing and horizontal stabilizer. This hot air was used to melt ice or keep it from forming in the first place.

Our PV-2D was made for the South Pacific and the invasion of Japan and as a result this system was not installed at the factory. even though the ducting in the wings was not in place a nice feature of this system still remains. The leading edges are attached with 10-32 screws (a lot of them!) and can be removed. This gives great access to the forward part of the wing which is not all that common on aircraft of the day."

As Johnny Carson used to say, "I did not know that".

:salute:

Well, we can consider the black leading edge as fine contrasting trim. :)

Okay, I have four variants now:

T=Tanks, G=Guns, R=Rockets, H=Hardpoints

1) Civilian Clean
2) TGR + torpedoes
3) TGH + torpedoes (No rockets)
4) GR + torpedoes (No Tanks)

What am I missing?

EDIT: Restated to jive with the model folders

5) GT (no H)?

As such:

Long range recon.

Maybe these?

2) GR + torpedoes
3) GRT + torpedoes
4) GRH + torpedoes

What am I missing?

Perhaps maybe Tanks, Hardpoints, guns and Guns only?

I think that would be enough, at least for my sim. I reckon if I want a long range variant I'd just fuel up the "civie" Harpoon and creep along at around 180 KIAS or so to get the most range. I do like the idea of having those 2 "fish" in my Harpoon tho.

Wait, no downturned mouths here.

Give me the specific options like I listed above.

List them 1,2,3,4

ok it's gone 2am i'm hitting the sack but here's one last WIP image... going to paint some camera ports into this one and call it a 'pathfinder/BDA (Bomb Damage Assesment)' Aircraft :salute: then i can think of doing some civvy operators i think.... :wiggle:

Sorry Milton.....

I am sorry but I do not understand this/these options. Be specific ... list each one separately please. Take a few minutes to save me hours from misunderstanding.

Sorry Milton, this will probably make more sense than my first post.....

1) GTH + Torpedoes
2) G only

Beautiful work Matt! :applause:

Okay, we have five variants now:

T=Tanks, G=Guns, R=Rockets, H=Hardpoints

1) Civilian Clean
2) TGR + torpedoes
3) TGH + torpedoes (No rockets)
4) GR + torpedoes (No Tanks)
5) G Only

Versions 2-5 include the turret of course.

BB686, as to long range, the Harpoon has a normal range 1790 miles with armament. At 180 kias, that keeps you in the cockpit for at least 9 hours. You want to add 3 more hours to that with tanks?

A long-range PR variant w/tanks and camera ports makes sense, it was a very long-range war in the Aleutians and Northern Kuriles - 12 hours endurance with external and internal tanks sounds good.:salute:

Okay, what about turret, guns, and rockets. A PR was not armed?

Great work by everyone! Can we sneak in a tanked mdl for us tanker freaks? :kilroy: *ducking from any gunfire :icon_lol:
