AR196 Project in AD2K

(...)
well, later has come and gone,
and i have run a few experiments.
HOT DAMN, i can make the bottom
of a float appear and disappear,
based on the throttle percentage.

granted, this test was rudimentary,
but i have no doubt that a solution
to a float sitting on the water
and a float up in the air
visualization problem has been found.
now, for the fine tuning.

as far as i'm concerned,
this is a very cool turn of events.

Don't you like it when, amid all the sh*t that keeps hitting the fan, a breakthrough lands on your tired laps?:icon_lol:

Like you, smilo, and unlike Ivan, I can't come-in-and-go-out of a project like that. This is why I do so little these days. I had to stop work on the top jeep because the up-down building of the top hit a wall; too many bleeds to my taste. My thread on SCASM is well advanced - I think I have 4-5 chapters in reserve - but posting here is more and more difficult while my ImageShack "free" account is getting more and more restrictive. (BTW, if anyone knows of a good image server that is not trying to empty your pockets...:kilroy:).

When I get into a project, my "absent-minded look" is a giveaway. And it's not only a look; I had a close call with a truck at an intersection, I was simply absorb by the correct showing sequence of the aforementioned jeep top.

greetings all,
another week of work has gone by the by.
and as usual, not a lot of work on the 196.
although, there was a heck of a lot
of thinking about it.
especially, during that hour and a half drive
to Tacoma at 03:00.

fortunately, there is not a lot of traffic
and i have trained myself to split my brain.
i find i can think deeply about a subject
and still keep focused on driving.
sounds scary, but i know it works....so far.
i have actually, driven to work
and thought to myself, i don't remember the trip.
now that's scary...
i thought i might have been asleep at the wheel.
on another trip, i was deep in thought,
came around a corner and there was an obstruction,
which i avoided. whew, i was awake
and concentrating on driving as well.

so, first thing this morning,
i played with aired a bit.
it didn't take long to give up
and go back to using the stock 190 air file.
this is one of those things that will sit
on the back burner for a while longer.

currently, i'm working on the visuals
for the karman, interior and exterior fuselage,
interior and exterior windscreen, panel,
and soon, gun pod, exhausts and scoop.

i have a portion figured out,
but still have a few minor bleeds.
i need to decide what's acceptable and what's not.
one side wants to get all anal and have none,
the other wants to let it go and move on.
right now, the move on side is winning.

it's so much fun being schiz....:mix-smi:
at least there are lots
of others to talk to.

have you tried photobucket?
i havent used it for a long time, so,
i'm not sure if it will serve your needs.
can't you just upload your images here directly?

----------

about all i can do is, maybe,
think about my other projects.
(i have two that i started and set aside)
i know that if i even open them up,
it will be all over for the 196.
i am well known for not finishing
what i've started...story of my life.
the 196 is an exercise in diligence.
i have been distracted several times,
but have fought my way through it
and been able to remain focused on the task at hand.

i will say that i've learned a lot from the 196
and am hoping that i can use it
when i finally get around to finishing the others.

--------------

yesterday was tedious, but i believe i made progress.
i was having a major problem with the karman
not showing properly with the fuselage
from different view points
and worse yet, showing into the interior.

it seems that i may have figured out
how to do the coding sequence
for the interior and exterior from the aft
gunstation, cockpit and forward to the cowling.

i base this bold statement on a few
successfully completed sections.
i sure hope i haven't spoken to soon.

Smilo,
not stealing your thread... but this is to Hubba
I use PDF995 (see link) and will be more than happy to
turn your tutorial into a downloadable pdf format for all to
keep and reference.
http://www.pdf995.com/

Send me what you have and I will set it up and of course be more
than willing to host it.

Tutorials on forums are great, but hard to reference back to over time,
Your hard work should be stored in a format that can be referenced on
demand.

Just my 2 cents worth :salute:

Dave www.thefreeflightsite.com

not to worry, Dave.
when it comes to changing the subject,
i'm the worst offender.

besides, your idea is a great one!
jump on it, hubba.

one thing you didn't mention
about posting tutorials on forums,
if there's a crash, all is lost.
a prime example is of one hubba
wrote called "sizing it up"
it was a how to resize drawings
to be used for building a model.
it was very informative
and even had pictures in the hubbabubba fashion.

fortunately, i made a copy
before the great soh crash of 05.
i would be happy to make it available,
with hubba's permission, of course.

---------:kilroy:---------
just to get back on track;
today has been a great one for progress.
other than a minor mishap
when i overwrote several hours of work.
basically, i used a copy of a 3DM file
and didn't rename it, thinking it was okay.
well...NOT. the project name was still the same
and when i was finished, i was prompted to save.
well, of course, i'll save it. IDIOT!!!
i overwrote and lost everything i had done.

here's the good part;
i opened the original file, the copy of which
i had just spent hours modifying and lost,
carefully renamed it and redid it all in half the time.
very cool...to say the least.

Hi Dave,

I already use PDF for some of my works. A good example would be the numerous PDF documents coming with AAC_Ripe.

Thanks for the offer, I will ruminate that one for a while.

That was a good one smilo. What was very flattering was the fact that you used a GIF of mine for your screensaver! I was blushing when you told me that!

By all means, do it! You have my blessings (that's even better than my permission). I will even get a copy for myself as, although I kept everything in a folder, it is like Ali Baba's cavern.

One think I like with forum threads is that it permits feedback and let you post GIF animations. Unfortunately, my account at ImageShack no longer let me upload GIF. As for SOH attachment, my PC freezes every time I try to get more than one picture per post. Something to do with java apps and my old W98SE not seeing eyes to eyes.

And the thread reply editor works only half of the time, I hope it will for this post...:kilroy:

i heartily agree that publishing on a forum
opens the door for feedback,
which is a good thing.
but, after seeing so many
good things go by the by,
i think it is important to archive them
in several different places for safe keeping.

i will have to search my various hard drives
for the sizing it up tutorial.
then, if Dave is interested,
i will get a copy to him for his site.

sorry, i can't be much help
with your access to this site.
BUT, i may be of assistance with your attachments.
might take a bit of work,
but i think it will be worth it.
do you think you can email them?
if so, i could add them as replies to your posts.

where there's a will,
there's a way.

btw, what does the edit comment mean
in your post above?

_____:jump:____
hey, check out your post above
for a quick test,
i added an attachment

For a moment, I thought that the editor was going berserk.

I do understand the need for keeping archives, that's why I try to write my tutorials in TXT format and make copies of the pictures I used. The problem is that I often make last minute changes, not in the TXT, and the indexing of pictures tends to get blurry...:icon_lol:

As for the note; look underneath.... (I left it blank on purpose)

oops! Before, it would state that the post was edited. I think that one is now gone.

mine says,
if it is "optional", then why does it leave a blank space when not used?
i guess that disappeared after i edited in the 196 picture.

if you can get me your images,
i would be happy to attach
them to your posts...with in reason.
what ever that means.
i don't want to see
you stop providing useful information
because of an upload problem.

i was thinking, there is always
the media fire account
where you could upload them
and i could move them here.
that's a bit convoluted, though.

we can make something work.

196 news...spent the day
screwing around with air files.
what a pain
i just want it to sit level on the water.

not a heck of a lot of progress today.
just the usual bumps in the road.
all to be expected, really.

for some reason, the program wanted to play games
and i had to start over a couple times.
thank goodness for backups.

so i spent a few hours screwing with the air file.
what a waste of time.
i ended up searching through my ac stash,
found a few tricycle geared ac,
grabbed the air files and tested them in the 196.
none of them fit the bill exactly,
but i settled on one that the floats sit level.
at this point, i don't care if she sits above the water.

for a week or so, i've had a problem
getting the wings to show without bleeds,
especially from the tail view.
today, i tried something different
and they show perfectly.

i am ecstatic!! :greenbo:

other than the fact, that now,
i have a problem with the floats and frames,
i'm very happy with the results.
it's always somethin', isn't it?

here are a couple of the latest screenies.
this time, i guarantee that there is no illusion.
there are no bleeds,
no matter what the view angle is.
all the control surfaces are functional,
but the turning prop and spinner
are not currently installed on this model.
my little assembly experiment
seems to be working, although,
there's always a glitch, somewhere.

oh yeah, at this point, the MDL is 158kb
for the version pictured here.

progress report

what i neglected to mention in the above post
was that there was an overlap problem
with the floats.
so it goes.

that was corrected this morning
and prop/spinner animation was added.
there is still a very minor prop overlap,
but at this point, i can live with it.

major rework was done on the floats
this week, and animation was added.
so now, she sits flat on the water
and the bottom of the floats appear
when she gathers speed.
it ain't perfect, but i am pleased with it.

getting the float framework to show properly
will be next on the list,
along with adding the accessories,
float rudders, exhausts, intake scoop,
gun pod, tail gun, and so on.

then, there's the interior.

no...i haven't given up,
gone on vacation or retired.

i've spent the past week or so
dissecting and rebuilding the float to fuselage
struts and joints so they will show properly.

the work has been very small and detailed.
i often wondered if anyone will notice,
but once started, i had to finish.

i've also completed the intake scoop
and the right exhaust, which will be mirrored.

i still have the gun pod and the tail gun and mount.

now that the float frame struts are done,
i need to break them down
and plug them into the model.

gosh, i sure hope it all fits together correctly.

one thing i've noticed this weekend,
the coding and sealing/glue process
seems to be going a lot smoother.
it would be nice if i'm starting to get the hang of it,
but we all know how quickly
that kind of confidence can change.

sorry, no screenies

With both those done......should be no problem with an Aug.23 rd delivery :jump:

Peeing in my pants, someone call my nurse.

lol, KEEP COOKIN' MY FRIEND

Dave
