AvSim news release posted

This is the most awful news. How destructive can people be and to what purpose. My mind is just blocking.

Have always been wondering WHY those hackers do these kind of things! They are just terrible people! What purpose is in making sooo many people unhappy! :ipepsi2:

Wow, I'm not sure which feeling to go with first. Anger or sadness.
I hope the people who did this receive their dues when their found out.
I'm just dumb-founded as to why this would have been done?
 
I wonder. . .do these folks do this simply for the enjoyment of it. . .just to see how much damage they can do or are they individuals who have had run in's with the governing body for AVSIM in the past and just decide to get back at them in this way?

You do have to wonder what security measures the AVSIM site was employing, and if they felt it was locked down pretty tight, then any site is vulnerable. Bottom line is, if you are an enterprising hacker and this sort of thing is like done for the pure enjoyment of seeing your efforts be successful then eventually any site can be hacked in this way, they'll just keep at it until they break it. Very sad.
 
The ramifications of this are mind boggling. There are dozens if not hundreds of sites that post thier downloads to AVSIM. This means that not only AVSIM but the multitude of other sites that use the AVSIM site to post thier work are shutdown as well. I have a list of favorites I cruise on a weekly basis, I cannot begin to even list the ones that thier downloads are linked to AVSIM. What a shame !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a shame!

Instead of posting curses and possible kinds of detention on the people who caused this damage (it's all been said before...), let me deal with this question:

My first reaction on the downfall of the AVSIM server was to play with the idea to upload some of my recent repaints to flightsim.com right now.
But then I wondered what would happen if all the people who stored their works at AVSIM up to now would react the same way?

Wouldn't the flightsim.com servers suffer from the estimated overload?

I'm not a hardware nerd, but to me, it isn't too hard to imagine that my instant reaction wouldn't be the best on the long run.

What do you think?
 
Flightsim is running slower than normal this morning. I assume they are getting Avsims normal traffic. I doubt that uploads to Flightsim would be enough to cause any problems.

Remember the old saying "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". Perhaps the uploads ought to be spread to more sites to ensure they are preserved permanently.

Not only ones who regularly post, but those who are (were) SOLELY hosted on Avsim. First ones that come to mind are the lovely Rockwell Commanders of Veneaviones.
From their Repaint guidelines: "Uploads shall be done to AVSIM only (www.avsim.com) It is not allowed the upload to any third-party sites. Uploads to..."

As many of the modelers, painters, developers are now in "retirement", have moved on to other things or are defunct, the possibility of replacing hundreds of add-ons may be difficult-to-impossible in the event the file library cannot be recovered.

Word to the wise: Even if you don't like the product, save it for others. "Delete" is a command that comes too easily.

I almost never get rid of ZIP files and took a look at what I've got for FS9 and it is up to a little over 9 GB :isadizzy:

That comes from my mother's side...:icon_lol:

I also have a lot of ZIP files from my CFS2 days...:medals:

If we take into consideration all the files that originally came from Avsim, I would say that perhaps 30 % of those come from them, with the rest being a selection from other sites such as the Outhouse, Simviation or Flightsim and smaller ones thrown in for good measure... :kilroy:

I specialise in propeller driven vintage planes flown during both WW's with just a dab of jets which are worthy of a special appreciation.

A lot of other simmers have their own preferences...:ernae:
which translates into a lot more files other than mine... :kilroy:

Would it make sense (thinking out loud...:kilroy:) if these planes were sent back to the site to help them reconstruct their library... :kilroy:
... along with a lot of other downloaders' saved zip files who have benefited in the past from their kindness ?

Or is this lunacy and I should be taking my medecine in a hurry ???:sleep:

There may be a time for that. It will depend on the efforts to rebuild and the desire of everyone to carry on after the battle. Certainly, if Avsim gets resurrected, they will be looking to reestablish their library - first from the original developers where possible and then from the packrats among us.

This isn't going to be a quick process from the sounds of it, but I'm sure many will be willing and able to help the rebuilding once it gets that far. Of course, one way to track the source of the downloaded files is to look for the avsim.diz file in the D/L.

In the meantime, we're all just going to have to be patient... very patient.
 
I have been patiently waiting for AvSim to get back to running smoothly so I could hit their library HARD looking for anything and everything by Brian Gladden and for anything with floats and radial engines. Then this happens!

Hackers...what can I say that all of you have not already thought?

Loss of a huge library of sim files, covering CFS1 through FSX...maybe even more. Huge huge loss indeed. One that may never been fully recovered from. As srgalahad said, many modelers and painters uploaded only to AvSim, many modelers stated that repaints could only be uploaded to AvSim. With those files being no where else (except maybe on Simnetwork since that site is always uploading files to their site without permission), many many files may never be seen again.
