Bloom from Russia

BTW, these effects depend almost entirely on the capabilities of your particular video card as far as I can tell. These are DX filters.

Ok, this program has a lot of usefulness. Essentially what it is doing is adjusting the pixel light intensity based upon the surrounding pixels. Another way you can see this is when using the menus. You see it adjust the coloring on the fly.

Now, is this true bloom? Yes AND no. If for example you have the sun silhouetting the spar of an aircraft, the light will not necessarily "bleed through." However, there is the possibility this can be tweaked.... which is what I truly want to do. I'm going to dig into this some more.

The nice thing about this, is that it essentially simulates how the human eye interacts with light environments. What I mean is that when you are focused on a very bright object, other objects become seemingly darker. If you walk into a dark room, your eye will become accustomed to this particular level of lightness, so they adjust. This is what it does thus far.

Where this could be useful is when flying at night. I'm sure I'll need to adjust it further to make it do that. I'll keep playing and see if I can come up with some awesome profiles.

Well it is Bloom, but its not true HDR, and theres a big difference between the two.

Yes, you are correct Alex. However, bloom as we know it in FSX is NOT simulated in the same way as with this .dll. I never mentioned HDR. Bloom is nothing more than a simpler filter, aimed to simulate what HDR accomplished. A great example of what the difference between bloom and HDR is, is by playing Oblivion.

Guys, when I mean "bleed through", this is what I mean. The picture on the left is FSX default "Bloom." The image on the right is with this utility. There is no "bleed through."

Perhaps we understand each other now?

Here is a video visual demonstration of what is happening:

Ok!!! YEAH! This can ABSOLUTELY be done!!! This .dll is absolutely BRILLIANT!

There is a whole section in the .ini dedicated JUST for bloom! I just accidentally washed my whole screen out in a white glow.

This opens up the possibility for all sorts of effects, such as speed effects, etc.

Look at this screenshot I JUST took using NO FSX bloom! NO HIT ON FPS!!!

This to me proves that indeed FSX was trying to render bloom with the CPU rather than the GPU. There is so much potential in this utility, it makes me sick.

This is by far one of the best tweaks ever for FSX regarding visual quality, essentially giving the video card the power to provide graphic power to FSX that compares it to other great titles on the market.

More to follow. I got some tweaking to do!

Great video Cody :friday:
and Rog thanks for the HU
I made the same change in the ini file as you its better
now to fool with it

I certainly cannot take credit for that video. I actually saw this yesterday. What a coincidence that it just so happens that I stumbled onto this post!

Great video to demonstrate the potential of this .dll, Cody. I will note that this tweak works well with my 8800GTX 786 videocard, so Cody, it's not just for 9XXX cards and higher. Good news for me:wiggle:

I do realize a slight frame hit and am tweaking the .ini to tune this better, but it's worth it for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with, and thanks for the work on our behalf.

With the default bloom you will also get a refelct effect of the surface of bare metal aircraft; is it possible to simulate that effect with this module?

First short test looked promising with the DC-2, though IMHO the F-16 turned too dark in bright daylight. The darker sky looks great though. Maybe time to do some tweaking over the weekend.
The option to simply turn it on or off by pressing shift+F12 is a nice touch as well!

One little thing though: I use FSScreen to take my screenshots, but when I use the printscreen key ENB saves the screenshot as well in the root FsX folder. At 5 Mb a piece that could fill my disk quite rapidly.

In FsX I use the "V" key. It saves a bmp in the default photo folder. Irfan converts them to jpg and then I delete the bmps.

What I'm trying to figure out is what other effects FSX is supportive of before delving headfirst into all of the bloom settings.

Apparently field of depth works... what that means, is that if you are looking at the panel, the outside world will unfocus, and vice versa. I'm still tweaking. Initial tests DO show it working. This would be a VERY useful tweak for those with a trackIR.

Ok. This is the preliminary results. I'll post a "how to" next after I tweak it slightly more. Results are excellent, and FPS isn't too bad but there is some loss.
