BSK Malta Scenery Problems

The files Sandbags.bmp, Oilbs0.bmp and 137b2su1.bmp are all parts of a standard CFS2 install, so should be present – unless somehow they have been accidentally deleted. However, the file Oilbs0.bmp could have come from an installation of the prerequisites for Maskrider’s files, and that version is a different size from the default version – I cannot say whether his smaller version is or is not a cause for the CTDs.

On the other hand, the file Roue_bus.bmp comes from another of Bruno’s files - BSK_Malta_Bus.zip. This archive is a prerequisite for the main Malta archive - BSK_Malta_V2.zip. However, it seems that the contents of the bus archive are rather convoluted, so that unless particular care was taken during installation it is possible that Roue_bus.bmp was not installed, which may be leading to the possibility of a problem at run time.

And, if the correct installation procedure for the bus was followed, then it should indeed be in the aircraft folder as just suggested by Kevin . . .
Yes Ro, but as ValettaNEW seems to be calling for bgls held in the inf/scenery folder, I wondered if that was confusing CFS2.

CFS2 should look for textures in the main CFS2/Texture folder only if those textures are not present in the inf/texture folder - what if that doesnt apply if the bgl is called as a library object?

And as I just responded to Kev, The bus appears on the quayside at Marsa, so it's already part of the Marsa bgl.

John, thanks for looking up these textures.
I'm away over the weekend, but once I'm home again I'll try if installing them causes the CTDs to stop.

FWIW - Some minor conclusions – I have no idea whether these are related to the cause of the flying problems listed in this thread.

The archive BSK_Malta_Bus.zip contains another archive - Malta_Bus.zip – which only needs to be installed if the user wants to fly the bus around their scenery, in which case the actual ā€œaircraftā€ needs to be loaded into the main aircraft folder. This is the only time that the texture roue_bus.bmp is needed, in which case it needs to go into the aircraft texture folder.

There are two versions of the file Oilbs0.bmp in the Malta Spitfire and Operation Pedestal auto install campaigns by Rami – a copy of the default CFS2 file held in the CFS2 TEXTURE folder, and a copy of a smaller version of Oilbs0.bmp in the SCENEDB\inf\texture folder. I have not yet managed to identify the source of this smaller file, other than that it arrived from the prerequisites for Maskrider’s objects library..

I have found a few differences between the contents of the BSK_Malta_V2.zip archive and the two Rami campaigns. The BSK_Malta_V2.zip archive contains a flatten.txt file in the SCENEDB\Malta1 folder, which is not present in either of the campaigns, which may mean that its use in a .BSK_Malta_V2 installation could affect the results of flying there.

The two texture files vrbanksu.bmp and vshoresu.bmp appear in the SCENEDB\Malta1\texture folder and the SCENEDB\Malta2\texture folder in both campaigns, but are absent from the equivalent BSK_Malta_V2 folders.

At the same time, while the texture files vriversu.bmp and vroadssu.bmp appear in the SCENEDB\Malta1\texture folder and the SCENEDB\Malta2\texture folder in both campaigns, the files in the equivalent BSK_Malta_V2 folders are apparently different, despite being the same size as the ones in the campaigns. Perhaps the following list will help to clarify these results –

I have no idea whether these facts will affect your problems flying over Malta, but if you think these conclusions might be related to the cause of your problems, then you can test this proposition by copying the five files in the attached archive into the four folders SCENEDB\Malta1\texture, SCENEDB\Malta2\texture, SCENEDB\inf\texture and the main CFS2 TEXTURE following the directions in the archive, and overwriting any existing files if prompted to do so. I suggest you make a backup of your original files in case you decide to revert to your existing installation.

I have assumed that there have been no problems experienced in flying in either of the campaigns mentioned here.

Hope this information helps in some way,
Ro

Unfortunately it seems it is not the textures.

I tried both UncleTgt“s and Rohan“s, but the situation is still that with ValettaNEW bgl installed I get the CTD, and with that BGL either completely removed or replaced with Mav“s version it works without CTD.

Bummer.

I don't have a MED install, & am still heavily committed in the CBI, but I spent a little time looking through the decompiled valettaNEW.bgl.

Needless to say, I think there are a number of unexplained issues.

The most significant issue is that objects 7 & 8 call for the same GUID, but are at different locations?

Anyway, here's my thoughts so far, & ideas for a possible way through this...

FWIW,
3cities.bgl,
BSK_Marsaxlokk.bgl,
BSK_Marsa.bgl,
Rinella_Battery.bgl,
BSK_Ricasoli2.bgl,
fort_tigne.bgl
and BSK_FtRicasoli.dp all appear in all three of Rami's Malta Spitfire, Operation Pedestal and Beaus In The Sand campaigns.

BUT
BSK3Cities2.bgl,
BSKValetta2.bgl
and BSK_Maoel.bgl do not appear in any of those campaigns . . .

HTH,
Ro

Ok.... the first one i went thru it with a chainsaw...hence ? Maybe no CTD.

This is question mark... maybe bettet?!

Just to highlight the queries regarding Valetta's 3 Cities bgls, here's a MCX screengrab comparison...
1000003167.jpg
BSK3cities2 has Fort Angelo, 3cities doesn't. Apart from that they're pretty much identical.

And the same for Marsa...
1000003168.jpg
BSK_Marsaxlokk is obviously unfinished, with large parts untextured, whereas BSK_Marsa covers the same area, but is fully textured.

Mav, I just tried your file. Unfortunately, the CTD is back... It seems to methat one of the objects is bad.

I didn“t get very far with my own effort this afternooms, because real life caught up with me again. Tomorrow I have to go to work again, so no more progress until after the weekend.
What I intend to do is place the objects as in John“s text above, then fly my test mission, which happens to reproduce the CTD reliably, again and again, changing out objects after each CTD, until I have the bad one.

Here are the layout files for Malta. I think the download needs amending, incorporating fixes as suggested by Mav and John. Unnecessary files like BSK_Marsaxlokk as well as the duplicated Rinella_Battery and BSK_Ricasoli2 should be removed.
There is also the issue of BSK_Filfla which I mentioned on page 4 of this thread.

SKylane, thanks for testing it out.

Think it's time to put this to bed..... in this attachment there's 8 "bgls".... each 1 has had an object edited out, the number at the end of bgl represents the object edited out... there are 10 objects all up in the vallettanew .bgl, i'm asumming the first 2 are ok.

Just rename them org name to use....

Skylane , see which ones are ok?!

Mav, I'm away from home and can only continue testing after the weekend. But I will make some time on Tuesday to check your files with my test mission.
Thanks for your effort! šŸ™‚šŸ‘

The duplication of the Rinella Battery model (7 & 8) is deliberate. It represents both the Rinella Battery and the Cambridge Battery, each housing a 100 ton muzzle loading gun situated north and south of Valetta.

Although there may be a couple of unfinished models included in the package, they aren't called for in rendering the scenery.
