My memory must have completely rotted away. With about 1400 hours flying "F"and "G" KC-97s The only smoke I recall is on engine start. In flight, the scanner would be checking the engines and if he saw smoke he reported it immediately. We could tell how bad it was by his tone:
No worries: "#3 smoking a bit "
Some Concern: "We got SssSmoke Cumin outa #3"
Oh Sh_ _: Capn, That smoke just turned WHITE!!!!! You gonna ring that bell???

Find it in the "new"section of the warbirds library. I will do a PK base for use with this type of aluminum if anyone is interested? No markings of course.
 
@Maj Kong -- that has the ring of authenticity to me. Any other remembrances of things past, please tell. (Note you can comment out the smoke gauge in the VC section of the panel.cfg and have an entirely smokeless version.)

@Rick -- yes very much interested in a no-markings paintkit.

@Gray Eagle -- Reverse has been in there since day one. For a test, have her sitting on the runway. Throttle 10 (none). Release parking brake if set. Call up Shift-4 Monitor > Engines > REV and mid click to arm. Check REV turns bright. L-click. Check REV starts flashing. She should begin to move backwards immediately. Adjust throttle for more speed. The Water Rudder key has been programmed to set this in motion, too, but also only after 'arming' REV via Monitor. At which point in the procedure does REV fail on your setup?
 
Yup. Has a ways to go as stated above..

It handles like the big boy should. Took a few short flights and loved it.... CHEERS for this one.....
 
A question regarding the sounds in the panel folder. The flap call out works when activated from the monitor but not from the keyboard buttons, same with cowls. Is there a way to make the sounds work with the keyboard? Also I have never heard a brake squeal.

If you were one of the four (five if a Radio Operator was on board) in the Cockpit it could be a bit tight. The Cabin bulkhead (hatch entering the cabin. was called STATION 230. Aft measurements for the KC began 50 INCHES ahead of the nose, so that bulkhead (STN 230) was actually 180" from inside the nose. Plug in instruments, Engineer's panels, Nav, and Radio Op positions, seats for everyone, + the "bathroom" :banghead: it was tight.

THEN:two of the folks up there smoked cigars constantly.

The "F" model had JP-4 /AvGas tanks lining the flight deck with a narrow ramp leading to the rear. Really a nasty little run to the emergency exit wearing a chest chute and seat life raft. Even worse in Alaska with all that extra clothing and Mukluks (spelling?).

Don't mean to bore you, just recalling a few things. Believe it or not: Slow and fat as it was it was still a very nice ride. The B-47 ,on the other hand, was beautiful and fast but about the worst crew-friendly plane ever built.

Maj Kong, not boring at all. Somehow detail such as the cigar smoke gets the 'feel' across like nothing else does. I would have assumed it was all a strictly No Smoking area, especially in a tanker. But then the closest I ever got to one of them was 50 meters, on their approach to rwy 09R at Tempelhof. These reminiscences by a C-97 instructor FLight Engineer are also a great read:

Terry, yes theoretically it is possible to have the callouts for keys and joystick buttons. I had that originally, but then found it strange to hear "cowl flaps cowl flaps cowl flaps" when opening cowl flaps to position 3 (not to mention 8). If I (or anyone) can think of a way how to cut the verbosity, I'll reconsider it.

TacPack users, I now seem to have a TacPack-capable model (with a bit of help from the folks at FSDeveloper) which lowers the boom on setting COM1 standby to xxx.9. Please drop me a PM or email if you want to test it in your sim as I don't have TacPack myself.

I've tried to get the props to reverse as per directions but when I apply throttle, it just goes forward.

CTRL + W is activated in my FSX, I press those key and then left click the REV and no reverse movement.
What is a Mid + enable mean? I see a info bubble with that info when my mouse pointer hovers over the REV button. I don't see a bright red on the Rev either.

The "F" button next to the REV works like a charm, I click on that and all engines stop in a heart beat.

Well, it's not what I suggested. Forget (for a moment) Ctrl-W. Instead mid-click REV. Does it turn bright? If no, something's wrong. If yes, L-click REV. Does REV begin to flash? If yes, she should be reversing. Or topple over if parking brakes are still set ...
So many factors come into play here that it's difficult especially with radials to say what goes wrong. Knowing at which point the procedure fails will give us a clue hopefully.

Okay, My mouse has a mouse wheel in the middle and so when I pressed it I then noticed that the REV light does indeed blink and when I Left click the plane will backup.

So, all is sorted. Bottom line is I did not push down on my mouse wheel so that the REV would activate.
I noticed that I have to do the same procedures to change direction from backwards to forwards.

TBH g-e.. I'd hit the middle mouse button to arm it loads of times but missed L-click to activate. Having read Manfred's explanation above.. I found as you've done that it does work. Shoddy operator error!!:dizzy:

All good guys. Because the Monitor routine has become so natural to me, I tend to forget that it's not self-explanatory at all.

And now, Gray Eagle, you will find that once REV has lit up you can also use your water rudder for toggling it on or off. You want it on a key, and a joystick button is even better, when you have your hands full trying to come to a quick halt on a short runway.

g-e.. yup.. drop me in the erring bit too!:very_drunk: I'm still having great difficulty navigating using NAV. I've spent the afternoon going round in circles and still can't see what's going wrong. I even went back to the default Cessna (that's how desperate I was) to try a similar route!! Making a plan using flight planner (IFR-VOR).. it tracks fine but this is intrinsically a GPS flight. I'll keep at it until I die trying or a lightbulb flashes on:dizzy:
