some technical probs

ok so far I'm having a bit of a hard time using regrouping the parts seems I have to use milkshape in order to regroup them and then send them back to Gmax and rename them only major prob is I need to make sure their don't lose the material that it cam with in milkshape when I'm regrouping them is their way to regroup in Gmax so I don't have do this through milkshape seeing it seems that I can't regroup parts in Gmax only milkshape can

BTW here is model I would be almost done if it could be regrouped well enough

seems I found out how to attach and detach stuff in Gmax now so far so good the buffalo MK I is almost there still need to fix the lods I'm just Fixing the landing gear it's kind of weirder than the wildcats gear :p once the main model is set I'll be starting on the lods then regroup the stuff and rename them
after that is the fun part animation and testing the model

after that it's as good as yours to have as open source :p next I guess it's the next set of planes to convert I might as well make a tutorial on how to convert a IL-2 plane into CFS2 format cause dang it's a lot of work to convert these by myself +.+

I appreciate your efforts a lot, that looks like a lot of work :applause:.

But one thing that is puzzling me, as this seems to be a long and hard job for anyone... Why more versions of some of these planes? In this case, we have an excellent set of CFS2-friendly Buffaloes by thicko, and I'm afraid that they are somehow an standard in CFS2 world. When someone wants to use a F2A/Buffalo I think what everybody has in mind is thicko series. They are frame-rate friendly, have plenty of skins to choose from, and indeed look great.

This is only be one example, but there are many planes that are excellently represented in CFS2 and don't necessarily need another version. Wouldn't it be more convenient focusing in the planes that CFS2 is lacking for whatever reason (because they were never created, or only old versions are available, or converted from FS2004 and with a fps problem) and lighten the work?.

A couple of examples that come to my mind are an early Bf 109 (Berta or Dora) or a Macchi MC.200. Both are available only in very old versions, and would be very useful in some of the typical installs of CFS2 (SCW and early WW2 for the 109, and MTO and Eastern Front for the Macchi). I'm sure that anybody could suggest a few planes available in some of those games that would benefit CFS2.

Just my two cents-worth opinion.
 
LOL I guess it's one of those "you should of told me this sooner gags" XP but I think I have only a few justifiable reasons one I guess it's because I'm trying to make an open source file for people to edit the model seeing there is no open resource for most people to use also there are a 4 example I can give

1. is what if they want a plane they can modify but can't seeing they either need to ask permission for the file or they have to build it form starch it's a lot more work trying to build one then to edit one that's all ready made and can also be edited into other versions out there if needed

2. mostly because most planes in CFS2 don't have damage textures set, or brake away parts like these do it be good to make a far more complete plane

3. the fact that you have an open source give you the freedom to edit it for any sim not just CFS2 it can be used for other sims as well

4. if a newer sims rolls out example they make CFS4 (yeah by luck if they do) we at least got something to transfer into


I guess the point is to gave someone something to use just in case there is no other way to build a plane :p

but there is one other reason it's because it was in my list of planes I as going in ABC order I stating with British type planes

I noticed they have a F2A-2 1940 buffalo it looks a bit different than the other MK.I

I was asking about this too what the difference between FU4-1a and a Corsair MK.II are they the same or they have something ells in set

seeing in IL-2 that have a lot of versions of the same plane based on year or model number

example P-51D-20 NA or P-51D-5 NT ?
 
I completely agree with the above. Your effort is astounding but as your model won't have the skin choice of the Thicko model It may be neglected.

There are many planes in IL2 that are not covered properly in CFS2. A few models that spring to mind

Halifax - Alpha and SG models but neither are frame rate friendly
Lancaster - VB is old and Dave Garwood is not Frame rate friendly
Seafire Mk1 and 2 - No mk1, Mk2 is converted and not frame rate friendly, Mk3 is covered by Cryingtoto
Typhoon mk1b early - Alpha model is not frame rate friendly
Wellington - Alpha and Ted Cook versions are not frame rate friendly
Bf109B and C - Only old versions available
Bf109T - None available (Certainly not with arrestor hook etc)
Blenheims - Thickos are very nice but are not FRF enough for large formations
HE219 - Models I've come across are either too old or incomplete
HS 129 - Only Old model available
JU87G - There was one in development but I'm not sure where it has gone
ME 323 - The version I found is an absolute FR Killer! Even with the LOD update

These are only off the top of my head, and some may disagree. If you were to work on a couple I would be more than willing to contribute my mediocre skinning ability to help. Unfortunately at the moment I have far too many commitments in the musical world to learn enough about model building to help with that


Please don't take this as negativity, your enthusiasm and efforts are contagiously energetic, It might pay to apply that energy in a slightly different direction though
 
I see then though I'm not taking it negativity XD I was just thinking converting them all as gmax files anyway for an open source file

so should just go with whats needed then and dump the buffalo then? I'll need a complete list of whats needed then if that's what you guys want then:wiggle:

There are a number of aircraft that have been done that are very good on the eye and also frame-rate friendly - others are frame rate killers.
Some aircraft also recieved an upgrade with the Donationware series - is anyone able to provide more information about them ?
Aircraft like the P-51D Mustang have had quite a few models done, but one that is very accurate and frame rate friendly is still required.

I would suggest to all that a wishlist is made up, JapLance & Ian Astill have mentioned a few that need an upgrade and there are quite a few more that also need attention.
At one stage Peperez was working on updating the list of aircraft available for CFS2 - may be worthwhile if he can add his 2 cents/dollars as well.

My suggestions for new aircarft off the top of my head are -
SNCASE SE-100, Supermarine Stranrear, Gotha Go 244, CAC CA-11 Woomera, Early model Catalina floatplane, Aero A-101, Meridionali Ro.37 & 37 bis, Heinkel He-45, Heinkel He-60, Kawasaki Ki-64 Rob, Fairey Seafox, Letov S328.

Would have more to add if I went back through my books and old wishlists. Some of the SCW aircraft could also be upgraded as well.

Then there are all of the WW1, the Golden Years, Luftwaffe 46 (piloted version of the V-2), and prototypes (secret projects) to consider adding, not to metion an updated VN fleet and ground forces.

Plenty of work to do for those that are willing, and in my case getting to a stage where I am able !!!!!!!

I guess after the buffalo has been done and fully tested i can start on a tutorial i do say I'll need help and
well i do think i need to fish the Buffalo all this talk about frame-rate has got me thinking seeing we don't know if il-2 models are frame-rate friendly when transferred into cfs2 i guess this buffalo could be our gene pig

also about texture mapping i guessing that if i was able to reconfigure the model i think that the plane can be remapped with anyone's texture set it just has to be compiled to MDL using that set in order to save file size

There are quite a few aircraft for both the Russians and Japanese that have already been done - and aircraft like the Mig-9 I do not recall seeing a decent CFS2 version of.

Also the P-51D Mustang while it has been done with quite a few models the jury is still out on if it needs an updated model - I have used the AWai version myself but there are some issues with the mapping which I found when I did my Korean War skins for them. Others prefer the Alpha which is not Multi-Lod.

Some of the differences on the various versions are noticeable to the die-hard enthusiast but not of concern to the average user, and some of the differences can be solved by an updated Airfile-DP-Paint job. If we are going to look at the various versions to the extent of the various models do we also go the full monty and upgrade the airfiles as well ?

Short of doing a spreadsheet for all of the CFS2 models and conversions for CFS2 and scoring them for detail-accuracy-multiLod it could be a long process to fully work out whats what.

I do think so they have the materiel set but we might have to change the format to CFS2 seeing they use a spacial TGA format much like we do with our extended BMP you have to use a spacial image viewer/converter to see them

I see yeah looks like we have to go through and download a our list of planes and start evaluating what good and what need improvements :p
personal I find it easier to just convert them all but that also a lot of work

I guessing what we need is a large task force of evaluators but how to get them to evaluate well there is only one way of doing this

we need to start a poll or something :p and get the communality to say witch one stays or and witch one needs updating but
to have a poll where you have to evaluate witch need it the most might be better that could help us see what to work on first

and we could go in small portions in ABC order by country and plane name so we don't have to make a huge poll list
 
guess I'll get some work done on the buffalo MK I we're gonna need to see first if it's frame rate friendly enough to be used in CFS2

I know we have a buffalo but we need a gene pig plane to see if it will transfer well enough


EDIT: just to let you now the cockpits in IL-2 is in another folder set it seems it works a lot like CFS3 models I might need to test it out and see
whats set up it has so we can make internal parts too cause I noticed the the ones for the outside model have poor detail everything is box shaped therefor needs to be replaced with the somewhat better cockpit details

ok like usual I like to get ahead of myself and start testing somethings this what i got

yeah It came out like pile of floating scrap metal :p also fond out the position of the plane is off
so i had to rotate it and get rid of the lods, and other junk to test it this is what I got

yeah no landing gear yet seeing I have to animate it and fix the lods and stuff note with or with out the junk it was it still very frame rate friendly even more so with out the junk so when it has the lods and animations added later to it, it will play a lot better just need to make that test next.

right now I'm just checking if it goes through the compelling process so far it did but it's just an un animated
object for right now


edit; funny thing is it can fly XP oh well
 
cockpit probs fixed well sort of

ok after taking a look at the cockpit i fond some probs one there is no cockpit folder named buffalo MkI
i fond out that the have 3 types one that served under Finland? named B-339 they they all so have a the F2A-1 and 2
cockpit the F2A-1 is unused

I decided to go with B-339 cockpit seeing it's close to the MkI but no sooner then that I find another problem
I can't make the cockpit export to 3ds format so I have to go use obj format then use milkshape to fix it there
are some small probs using obj into milk shape but they can be fixed through it as well

so now I got the entire parts to use witch makes me ask another question is it possible to make the interments show
damage textures like getting shot out much like the out side of the plane?

I guess Il-2 got more Russian fans then french :p I'd liked like to make the french planes by hand if i have too for both il-2 sas and sim outhouse later maybe ;D

There are a number of French aircraft available for CFS2 - also a lot that still need to be done to a decent standard, along with aircraft that were in development - many of which had performance that the Allies/Germans obtained years later. Had those aircraft been available at multiple squadron strength and used properly World War 2 could have ended very early especially if Britain and France had gone on the offensive as a result of the invasion of Poland - some of the many what-ifs of history.

Hope the Buffalo keeps your interest up - many people would like to see this progress to a good update of aircraft for CFS2.
Repaints for the SCW update have started.

Just curious. How do you think your reworked aircraft will behave as AI?

Do you know how to change any of the AI parameters or behaviors when performing tasks like, say, landing? What I mean is, can that aircraft in AI mode be 'programmed' to do things like, deploy a landing hook or stop in a certain distance apon landing?
