F7F Tigercat SOH Project

Grumman F7F-3P Tigercat - Living Warbirds: Steel Warriors

Awesome video of a real flying F-7F tigercat.

I love the sound of those R2800 engines.

When/if this comes out for FSX I plan on using Pratt &Whitney R-2800 Radial sound set created by Gary Jones.

Oh Camarillo,my home town airport. This video make me home sick.Great video!

J

Glad to know where this was filmed. Wish I could of lived in that area.
Looks like there are awesome airshows going on just about every day.
Looking forward to the FSX version of the F-7F.

:jump:

Well, based on the reading, sounds like you are then approaching the realism.

Milton,
I took your new creation for a test spin at KNQA (Millington TN) and she flys great.
I like the attention to detail especially those red wheel hubs and the tire treads.
Question, will there be a Navy livery or just USMC? Also, would like to see the start
up smoke effects added or is this something I can add to the aircraft.cfg file?
(smoke_effects)....

The freeware Alphasim Tigercat panel/gauges (FS9) DOES work (for the time being).
Thanks for letting us all (Beta) test it out. :salute:

Hello-
I copied the startup effect for Milton's Howard 500 ('grumpy howard', or something like that) and renamed it 'grumpy tigercat' so I could eventually tweak it- and then added the appropriate line to my aircraft.cfg file... it doesn't belch smoke out of all the exhaust stacks, but it still looks nice... Once I study the nuts & bolts of the effects file a little more, I may try to dial it in better...
-Mike Z.

That's the way to do it Mike.

AZ1USN, for the effects, you can do as Mike is doing. Copy this effect (or the A26 one) from the effects folder and rename it, then change this statement in teh aircraft Effects section:
startup=fx_Cranky_Howard changing its name to whatever you wish.

Then change these statements in the effect wherever they appear in Emitter sections:

X Offset= -0.810, -0.810 // horizontal offset from engine location
Y Offset= -0.110, -0.110 // Vertical Offset from the engine location
Z Offset= -1.250, -1.250 // Fore/aft offset from the engine location

The flames are a little different Z location than the smoke but you can adjust accordingly.

Once you save the new effect, you should be good to go.

As for paint schemes, the F7F is an SOH project, not a Milton Shupe and Team project. I have completed my phase doing the exterior model and temporary mapping, and Fliger747 has done the flight model. Others have created temporary textures for our WIP flying enjoyment. Later, when the interior model, panel and gauges are done, the real mapping for textures will be completed and the texture artists can have a go at doing whatever paint schemes everyone desires. :)

not to get off the topic of the start up smoke or paints...but man that video brought back memories of the F7F airtankers from when i was a kid...they faught fire here where i live .saw and heard them often..man i miss that soound..and that of the S2....i love turboporps to..raw speed...but nothing beats the sound of a twin radials

Thanks, Milton-
I kind of figured that was what I needed to adjust- Those X Y Z co-ords are relative to the engine locations that are defined in the aircraft.cfg file, right?

Here's how she looks before adjustments... -Mike Z.

You are correct. The location of the startup effect is based on the engine location in the aircraft.cfg, then the XYZ offsets take over from there.

Thanks, Milton-

Mike Z...

I like the paint job on your Tigercat. Where can I find that. Is it compatible
with Miltons F-7F?
:wavey:

A little lost here

Ok...I got the part about changing the name of the startup effect to grumpy_tigercat
Now were and what do I do with the info below.
X Offset= -0.810, -0.810 // horizontal offset from engine location
Y Offset= -0.110, -0.110 // Vertical Offset from the engine location
Z Offset= -1.250, -1.250 // Fore/aft offset from the engine location

I didn't see an effects folder for the F-7F.

(I was using the Howard acft.cft file to cut and paste into the acft.cfg
of the F-7F acft.cft in the effects section. From there on...I got lost. Sorry.

Thanks for pointing me to the F-7 repaint.

1. Create a copy of the effect and rename it for the F7F - Done right?
2. In the aircraft.cfg, change the effect to the one you will be using - Done?
3. Now open the effect and make changes in the Emitter X, Y, Z offsets to match up with the F7F engine locations. There will be 2 for smoke and 2 for fire, I think.

EDIT: Attached is a quik Effect setup I did for smoke; I killed the fire part. Download, unzip and put the fx in your Effects folder. Then use this statement in the aircraft.cfg:
startup = fx_msf7f_start

Replace or comment out any other startup=statement you may have.

Ahhhh.. Much better, thanks for the file and the extra tutoring.
Late last night the light bulb came on and I think all along you were
trying to tell me that after renaming the startup smoke effect then
(using notepad) open the renamed "fx" file and enter the X/Y/Z data.
I did all that and it was a PITA as there were numerous emitter entries
(I used the howard smoke "fx" effect. And, after doing all that, it was NADA.
I think I may not of "//" out the other startup entries. But, it works great minus
the flames. Again, thanks for the attachment. Looking forward (like the rest of us)
for the final release. :salute:

Happy that you got it going. :)

Effects are a pain to test because you must restart the sim after each change to get the changes loaded.

I removed the fire because the F7F effects will have the exhaust fire built into the gauges I think.

Just to let everyone know, we are building a temporary VC for the F7F-3 with a droppable 300 gallon belly tank for the RTW race. PRB is doing a panel for it so we can release it to the general public.

It will be a couple weeks getting it ready but here are some WIP shots. The package will be released as an "Unfinished Works" and the VC is temporary until N2056 frees up to do a proper one.

Here a few shots with my temp gauges. PRB's panel and gauges look much better.

If that stuff is clickable and textures and gauges will be added to the final 'temporary' product, that'll be enough for me! :ernae: Cheers Milton!

The WIP shots look very good. Flat panels for pasting gauges, switches, and radios would be fine. 3-D gauges are nice, but eliminate the possibility of making a custom VC panel.

I concur whole heartedly. Nearly every plane I download ends up with a set of Reality XP gauges. Just as smooth (if no more than 3 vc entries in the panel cfg) as 3d gauges and more fitting to my kind of flying.
