FlightSim.com is OFFICIALLY Offline...

In addition, if you have any of your own Flightsim.com downloads which are not on this site, you are more than welcome to upload them here.

I did two sets of repaints for the Alphasim B-52 G and H models (multiple aircraft in each set). They got some "OK" download numbers at FS.com, something like 600-700 downloads each over ten years. Uploading them here wouldn't be a problem, I save all of my uploads.
The question is, should I? I "think" everyone who was interested had enough time to download them back in the day.
I also don't have a big ego with the stuff I've uploaded, if people want them that's fine. If not, I don't lose any sleep. :wiggle:
So, I'm wondering if SOH would really want my old stuff? I REALLY like the current ability here to post "small" updates and textures directly to a forum post. I think this is a very valuable option.

Getting back to the B-52, the textures I originally uploaded were created using Martin Wright's "tex to BMP" programs. I have since switched over to using FSRepaint because I can use DXT textures as a "paintkit" without having them get "pickled" in the conversion process. So, I'm wondering if I should go through the process of re-releasing all of the old textures and cleaning them up slightly or just reposting both sets or just letting things be and work on newer projects?

Its hard to judge because I don't get a lot of feedback or comments. Its not like I want a parade down Main Street, but some feedback or (minor) criticism would be appreciated.

Guys, let's stop knocking Flightsim. Let it go!
It's not cool any more to keep on dissing them.

Gentlemen,

As the topic discussed is a testy one, we're keeping a close eye on this. Please keep it civil.

I look at other libraries
Flightsim libraries were comprehensive, well organized, and, until recently, easy to search. Avsim libraries are a kludge, very few thumb images ("a picture is worth a thousand words"), searches are literally hit-and-miss (specify "FS2004" and half the results will be "FSX"), and there seems no order to them. Simviation has tons of interesting files, with virtually no "rhyme or reason" to their listings, and apparently if you are not a paying member downloads are at dial-up speeds.

The current situation at Flightsim.com is what often happens when folks violate the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" rule and make changes.
Their modifications to the website were not user-friendly and I think a lot of simmers just stopped visiting the website. I've never spent much time on their forums because... well, I'm happy here. :)

How far back do uploads go. I have some FS2004 uploads that I plan to add. My aircraft upload with the most downloads was for FS98. Is that too outdated to re-upload here?

Our 'official' FS library sections go back to FS2002 but I'm sure older files could be accommodated if required. We go even further back for the combat sim guys, all the way to CFS 1 which is late 1990s vintage!

They had a few of mine over there, but after I uploaded them here first. Mostly some piston engine civil aviation stuff that seemed to be a better fit over there. I uploaded everything here. Including the stuff I'm not proud of.

I was a member of the forums at FlightSim, AvSim and Simviation. Got banned from Simviation though. They didn't like my opinion of the pay to download thing. I got over them a long time ago. FlightSim was easier to find stuff than AvSim though.

Willy, thanks for your uploads, even the stuff that you are not proud of!

I've always supported the freeware guys & appreciate all the work that they put into their 'creations' & download most freeware stuff that I have even the vaguest interest .
Our hobby is built upon the backs of freeware developers & their work MUST be preserved.

SOH is becoming the library site of choice, in this regard, as seen by the preservation of Garry J Smith's 'Ford Tri-Motor Project' software as well as all the GAS's (formerly payware) FS2004 & FSX/P3D add-ons.

The fact is, that FlightSim became the most important library. For FS9 anway. Here the numbers of files as per last November 26:

MSFS2024 3 files
MSFS2020 867 files
Prepar3D 1,590 files
FSX 32,315 files
X-Plane 6'806 files
FS2004 89,661 files (!)
FS2002 23,380 files

The numbers speak for themselves.
