Flightsim.com up for sale

Alphasim did the Kuznetsov with a couple of Sukhoi's. I think that package was called 'Sukhoi Flankers' or something. (drop a PM if you want)
We've already had that conversation, and thanks again. :ernaehrung004:
The IRIS Kuznetsov for FS9 is more of a rumor. Again, most of me thinks it didn't exist or there was some kind of hassle with Alphasim and they removed it from the FS9 package. That doesn't mean that I've stopped trying to find it. :wiggle:

Those odd-ball files are the most interesting to find. I often just scroll thru the libraries to see what catches my eye.
Avsimrus has a huge bunch of unique aircraft.

Loosing any library is quite sad. There are so many sites that have gone.. Garry J Smith's site comes to mind.
I collected a library of files spread across 6 portable drives. Many from vanished sites.
Then, (long story short) my laptop, in it's bag, with all my drives was stolen when I was in hospital, after loosing a fight with a mini bus.
So much was irreplicable. Thankfully, I have found a site or two where I did find those 'missing' files.
Apparently a member is working on their archive for downloads. Maybe just maybe, we can "harvest" some of it to have it here?

Cannot 'harvest' without permission from the original file creator.
Quite a few have said, in the Readme, as to what site their file can be uploaded to.

And given the fact that the OG Creator may be unreachable, no longer in this 'plane' of existence, etc. it may be best to 'get them while you can'.
I suspect that one day soon, their File Library will cease to exist, and whatever doesn't make the Migration will be lost. :(

Situations like this is where I hate "join walls" as I would say just wayback their whole file library but nope. I get the need for join wall to keep the bots at bay but damm it sucks RN. This is why I really don't care if other reupload what I have made/edited as long as they don't paywall it.

This was a conversation we had at FreeFlight back in the late 90's.
Especially with freeware, if we (as a community) didn't respect the wishes of the file creators the hobby part of it wouldn't last very long.
The concept of using "practical" logic with freeware (and even payware) can quickly become a slippery slope. For example, who gets to define what "abandonware" is and how do we deal with it?
Unfortunately, there were file creators who didn't think of what would happen in 2025. Flightsim and (even) AVSIM would always be there. IMO, we've been dealing with a gradual slide to only payware with some repainting permission. Otherwise, you pay your money and you take your chances. :indecisiveness:

That reminds me of my favourite track from the first Queen album I ever bought way back in 1975!

Ah, time goes by. Remember "The Emperor's New Clothes"?

A couple of months back I responded to proclamations of "we are going to respect the legacy of flightsim.com" by noting if they were going to preserve the site I would think they'd like us to know who they are so we can thank them; by insisting on anonymity they could be planning on raping the site and don't want anyone to know who to blame. I hope I am wrong. Time will tell.
This infuriated those ...people.

Fast forward two months and remember their statement of respecting the legacy, etc.
'In less than two months you have dumped the flightsim store (sending those people scrambling for support of their purchases); announced your intentions of eliminating the libraries by shuffling them off to some anonymous third party who promises to host them in archive form ...as long as convenient; and changed everything else on the site except the name itself. The place now looks exactly like flightsim.to; exactly what did you respect? the domain name?' They also announced an automated system of removing threads/posts when five years old to keep the site "fresh". The only people being treated nicely are those showering mellifluous praise on the new owners, so remember to genuflect when you log in.

There is an old Arabian proverb, "The man who would speak the truth should have one foot in the stirrup".

From what have I been banned? There is no flightsim.com. LOL (FTR, I've been there since '98, haven't changed a bit, and never received any "points".)

BTW, someone posted a link to a youtube video of someone lamenting the probable loss of those libraries, a thirty year collection of files for all flight sims dating back to FS5 days. True, there are not a lot of folks downloading FS5 files, but they shouldn't just be tossed out.

Exactly the same with me, jgf. I’ve received two warning notices for ‘abusive speech’ and I didn’t make one single comment. Now banned ‘indefinitely’. Seems ‘Maverick’ doesn’t like FS9’ers…at all. Or even a small amount of criticism no matter how politely it was put.

You know what they say maverick, if you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Flightsim.com seems to be run by the reddit kids now. I doubt it will last long.

Mate, if they're tossing out longstanding members like yourself, then I think we can safely say that "The end is nigh".

BTW, this guy calls himself Maverick? Really?? :D

This specific reality of 2020/2024 is what has been why I just have not made the change as of yet. I stay with FSX, not because I don't want to change, but because it allows me a deeper engagement with the sim (repaints, scenery, forgotten/lost airports, etc.) and installing on multiple home computers. The time will come when I purchase either 2020 or 2024, just waiting for a good sale price.

Agree, as far as a deeper engagement with the sim goes.
As far as 2020 & 2024 go, ... not for me, for the above reasons.

Thankfully, FS2004 is still very much alive, as seen within the forums, and with new downloads happening. Not as frequently as before, that cannot be expected of a 20+ year old sim.

OK, aren't we past the "why don't they this, that, or something else stage concerning flightsim.com?
Whether one likes or dislikes what one site or another does, should have no bearing on THIS site.
There are things about SOH I like, and other things not so much.
But it is what it is, and therefore I remain and participate.
Same with any other site.
I feel that lamenting changes at a site other than SOH accomplishes nothing helpful to either site.
We justifiably should welcome anyone who joins this site, and I am glad they are here.
But their experiences at another site, based on that sites administrative decisions, I feel has no place here.
JMHO

I've been a member here for some time, SOH just wasn't a daily stop like flightsim was. Whenever my most recent registration was, it was due to my having forgotten the previous one, lol. At my age I get up and go to the bathroom and by the time I'm there I've forgotten why I went.

The same discussion rages in the race sim community, with people asking why so many still use 20 year old sims when there are so many new ones. And the response is the same - that old one gives all the features you want in one well balanced package, all the newer ones excel in one or two areas but are deficient, if not completely lacking, in others.
