Graphics settings help

Hi All,
First....I have to tell someone. P3 delivers all that I expected and the devs represented and more. I was going to list what impressed me but it kept ending up like a Spanish Inquisition routine...the three things...the four things...etc. I will say the AI is astounding. I've never seen such weaves and reverses and dips...and it's refreshing tohave my observer actually shooting.
But I digress....I need help because frame rates are killing me. I've set my config from 5,3,3,5,5 to 4,1,1,1,1 and the fps varies little....maybe 15 at best. Until I see an airbase, then it's 3 or 4. In catalyst control center, I've tried high settings to low (let application choose), and tried overclocking a bit with it. Research has revealed claims that the newest round of drivers drop FPS and ATI's opengl drivers are very poor.

I run an ATI HD3850 AGP 512MB, Pentium 4 3.2ghz, 2 gig ram, Soyo Dragon2 motherboard. P2 ran better than this but I don't think P3 is the culprit. I can't help but feel that I've got something set wrong and am open to suggestions. Special appeal to Parky or devs but all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Hey man, from my experience drivers most certainly can cause that exact issue. There's no reason your card should be crapping out like that on you. Unless the heatsink is falling off or overheating like crazy. See what ATI offers in earlier or newer releases from your version. I've had issues with an ATI card in the past due to drivers, changed them and all was well. Just remember to REMOVE the old ones first!

Hey cpirmann..I got exactly the same issues with ATI HD4670 512MB. Maybe it is an ATI driver issue. Will snoop around and see.
Thx Danny btw :ernae:

Try setting your catalyst settings to override application and set your AA settings in there. (Make sure to first set your CFS3.config AA graphics settings to highest setting).

I set it at 2,2,2,2,2 and bringing that first number down (from 4 to 2 in your case) might really improved frame rates. At 4 I was having all sorts of issues and I have SLI 7800 GTX cards at 2, it still looks great and frame rates are greatly improved.

what resolution are you runnning at?

Jeez - what is this P3? I had a 7800GTx - one of 'em - for p2 and it ran it fine at 1600 x 900. My sliders were 5 3332

Good job I have a new puter! unless guys are running with AV- and God knows what processes in the background.
That's probably the reason.

I'm running 7.12 drivers with hotfix. I've read that 7.10 drivers are better I might try digressing. I'm set on 1280 x 1024 x 32 resolution which I've used on P2 for a long time. I can try dropping that I guess. I'll try the suggestions here and let you all know what I find. Looks like I need to resurrect my test pilot...Chester Tester.

I was running the 8.08's and they were fine. I updated to the 8.12 and had problems. I returned to the 8.10's, they're ok. This is for a 3870X2. I've heard the 8.12's were great for the 4800 series.

Your mileage may vary......

Kevin

I know it's counterintuitive, but OFF seems to run better at higher resolutions. I had P2 running on a rig similar to yours at 1280x1024. Someone here suggested I try it at 1600x1200 and voila! Major improvement in framerates. Mind you, I had never, previous to then run anything at that res, my monitors max, but it did help... couldn't tell you why though.

You do mean the 8.12's released on 12/10/08, yes?

Quite correct, I realized my error later and was going to clarify with my next findings. Research shows that ATI doesn't use the video ram in opengl. We'll see what further testing reveals. Tried 8.7 drivers with no change. Turned off all AA and AF but only gained 1 or 2 fps. Still working

Great call Zommoz,I just tried setting my graphics rez as high as it would go and now OFF runs smoother than ever:applause:Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't think my issues at 4 where problems due to speed it was more missing textures.

In either case it looks real good and runs well now.

Ok I am trying that one....interesting.

OMG! Zommoz it actually worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2560x1600 is my max and it is liquid smooth now!!!!!!!! Sweet crap, I'm almost speechless. I was running 1280 X1024 and it was just real good...now it looks great and runs A LOT better.....

This shouold be stickied.

I've had the same experience a couple of years ago when I first was trying to run OFF on a slower computer system and with my faster system I'm finding the same thing.. I think it has more to do with using the native res of your digital monitor. My 22" Acer LCD runs much smoother at it's native1680x1050 x32 bit color then it did when I tried a lower res thinking it would put less load on the card. Alizing and other settings I usually leave on the Navida auto setting.

CP,

Just a shot in the dark, but try running without high res Zbuffer in your CFS config.

Cheers,

Parky

It's amazing how smooth i'm running now at that high setting.I never in a million years thought I could run OFF at these high settings.Oh, and Polovski, now I can see all the damage on my plane and the enemy planes.Simply fantastic:jump:

Good news yah maybe we should put that in the FAQ, I am sure that would make most people double take, but at low res guess the GPU these days are leaning on a lampost reading a newpaper waiting for the CPU.
-it is one of those knowns but seldom said facts about CFS3 crank it up :d
