Graphics settings help

Good advice there......unless of course you have to rob a gas station to do it.

You hit it on the head. That's why i haven't upgraded yet. I might could afford a new video card, but not a new mobo, cpu and video card.
Any thoughts on the geforce 7300gt?

You'd be surprised just how affordable an upgrade like that can be. Might be more cost effective than throwing money at that 7300 only to find out it's no better than your current card. Why not throw me a PM with some top end budget limits and we'll talk.

Cheers,

Parky

Disable Write-Only Vertex Buffers
Disable Write-Only Index Buffers

gave me flashing trees and houses. If you encounter that uncheck it again.

OK thanks Gremlin. For some it may help, but only use that for ATI, and those tweaks are from some time ago too, drivers may no longer support/like that.

I've got a GeForce 7600GS 256Mb PCIe sitting in my closet. It's brand new and I only used it for two weeks. If you find an inexpensive mobo with PCIe that will support your processor, I'll give it to you if you're interested. BTW what kind of CPU and memory are you running? Maybe I can help you locate a decent mobo for a decent price. You'd be surprised how much better PCIe x16 is over AGP.

I've got an Intel Pentium 4 and 2 gig ram. I don't remember the specs on the ram. Thanks for the offer. Gimpy sent me a PCIe card if I ever upgrade. I need to see what that is.

Thanks CJ, looking into the upgrade option. But, this is just silly now. For kicks and grins, I loaded P3 on my Acer Aspire laptop Celeron 530 1.73ghz, 1gig ram, Mobile Intel 965 video and it runs better than my HD3850! I think an Etch A Sketch would work better than this video card.

There may be light at the end of the Aldis sight. I turned off fastwrite and AGP write in the smartgart settings. This is for ATI Radeon HD3850 only. That about doubled my FPS. My settings right now are all 2's clouds on 1. I have rain, vertex and index buffers disabled but NOT the write index buffers. The other checks I set normally. In QC I was getting 26 fps at 2500' down to 13 or 14 when the airfields (5 of them) were in sight, 17 - 20 when dogfighting with the aircraft in visual range. That would sometimes drop to 10 or 12 during fast turns. This was with heavy overcast and clouds as it was supposed to be snowng. Turning my head didn't drop much unless I brough an airfield into view. Had 7 -10 on approach to the airfield for landing. Not blazing by any means, but at least double what I had before. A quick jump in campaign showed the same results. Now that I've got P3 playable, I can test more tweaking and will keep posting what I find that increases performance (if there is any). Thanks to all for your suggestions and help. Now to start saving for that upgrade!:woot:

As you are a long time supporter and contributor to OFF I am delighted to see you are making some progress.

Keep at it .

I'm running it at 768x1024x32 and getting low fps in combat and low level flying. What do you suggest I shall try and set it to?

Need more details Loke?
But put your screen res up to max the monitor will allow firstly as suggested in this thread, via cfsconfig (workshop)

I have a Nvidia GF 6800 GT on 500mb and using a 17" CRT monitor.
I tried to set it to 1280x800x32 first, but that looked odd and didn't help.
Then I tried 1280x960x32, then the sim launched my monitor closed completely down. Had to reboot system to get it back, so I guess the last was too much.

Ok a couple of quick questions and observations, first I ran this at highest res 1950x1600 sliders maxed saw almost everything in shades of grey and unplayable put sliders at 4 an ran quick combat reasonable frames 19 to 25 ish no enemy encountered so im guessing this is not gonna be good when I bump into enemy aircraft first off I am running 2 9600T'S(xxx edition) and everytime I go into anti aliasing options to change it it always defaults back to none...? also I was thinking of upgrading my cpu from a pentium d 3.2 to a core 2 duo 3.0 any Idea how much that would improve i.e am i getting bottlenecked by cpu ram 2(gigs) or graphics mem(which i doubt) and best slider settings?

What slider setting Loke? try knocking terrain, scenery and clouds back 1.
Also find out on the net what your monitor max res is. Don't set it higher than it does for sure! Also monitors often have proper drivers. See if you can find the right one for it (check manufacturers website).

Bungo.. QC defaults to Freeflight (no enemy) check the QC settings and enemies etc before you fly.

Please see the FAQ for AA settings.

I can't believe i'm running at 1900x1440x32, 4x FSAA, 8x Anistropic, on a 22" Viewsonic P225fb CRT and it's smooth as can be.. very strange.. :faint:

What kind of rig do you have?

What kind of rig do you have?

Nothing special. Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R, Intel E8400 O/C to 3.6 with Noctua NH-C12P cooler, 4GB Mushkin PC9200, Sapphire ATI 4870 w/1Gb O/C about 10%, Antec 850W TruePower in Antec P182 case.. Framerates drop into the 20's at times if i'm low in a dogfight, normally up around 35-45.

Hey GaryR: I have close to the same rig, but have not overclocked my E8400 yet.

How much difference does the extra 0.6 GHz make? Worth it?

Also, if you have TrackIR I wonder how bad the blue-triangles are when rapidly panning your head. Mine are noticeable and I am hoping to tweak some things to make these go away.
