Installation guides for ETO and Rising Sun

You don't put anything in the bat; just change the target file. For example
ahh I see! sorry, I misunderstood. well the issue is that the file remover .bat doesn't actually reference any .exe.. the file removers for all the other updates were .exe themselves and the closest to a solution I found was 1) for windows 7, not 10 and 2) assumed that the compatibility was being set for starting a .exe. I've set everything I can to the correct compatibility setting.

I just know that it's either something trivial or would requiring reformatting the hard drive
isn't there some way to set commands in address lines in shortcuts?? gah I've been thirsting to get this to work for so long, it's so tantalizingly close
when I try to run CFS3 ETO Expansion Update Rev 1.50 File Remover.bat without admin authority it seems to find the things it's supposed to remove and it scrolls by really fast saying "Access denied" after every line. if I run it with admin authority it just says "access denied" a few times and then it says it can't find CFS3 ETO Expansion ORIFs Re-Install Cumulative Rev 1.40.exe in C:\Windows\System32 which seems like the wrong place for it to look, since it's in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\CFS3 ETO Expansion and then it shuts down. the things that flash past in the non-admin start are definitely still there. I just want to play with my cool toys D''''''''''':

I went ahead and removed the referenced directories manually (see: https://sim-outhouse.org/sohforums/threads/win-10-bat-compatibility-for-eto-1-50.164700/post-1389217). ETO 1.50 installed without issue. Once I discovered that I had apparently forgotten to update the directory reference for 64-bit in one of the swapper files, I've been able to play the 1943 campaign as RAF and US. But it crashed randomly in the 1940 france campaign while on mission, presumably due to broken references as per https://sim-outhouse.org/sohforums/...-on-warp-revisited-in-eto.163547/post-1374166. but now today for no apparent reason it can't load the '43 campaign anymore, it's saying it can't find airbases?? It worked fine an hour ago...

following the instructions in the readme for reinstalling the ERA files and being careful to select spawn first and then era, the install seems to be in better health - before I only ever saw the attack in the west loading screen, now I saw the 1943 one. but my old save still seems to be broken.. and still CTD in '40 campaign missions.

Still having trouble installing CFS3 PTO Rising Sun. Get a message the it could not find cfs3.exe . What am i missing in the steps. Thought i followed instructions. Been many years since i tried from scratch. Running windows 7 64bit premium OS.

hmm I haven't done PTO only ETO but I think I had that error when I had fucked up the master startup .bat?

Got it working ! Had a corrupt file in the app data file. Replaced and all works perfectly now. What joy to have it back up and running !

I have a lot of experience with computers and multiple installs of CFS3, and I have never been able to get the PTO theater swaping system to work correctly. I finally turned three of the theaters into dedicated installs, and gave up on the rest.

The Major posted this in 2016. Does anybody know how he accomplished this? I can't get the theatre swapper to work either. the default Pearl theatre works fine. this is on Win10, installed in the default location-C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun

I have it installed without any issue, and have had to reinstall due to hard drive failures a few times, the important thing to make it work is the paths outlined in the bat files.

There are 2 sets of bat files that need to work to get the theatre change done right, all paths shown below are for my install.

1. The Rising_Sun_Theater_Selector.bat in your main CFS3 game directory.
There are multiple lines (7) in that file that need to have the correct path to your application data folder (not your game install folder) - for example
C:\Users\yournamehere\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun________

2.
In your appdata folder (the one the path above points to) should have 7 bat files -
2avg_uisel
2midway_uisel
2pearl_uisel
2philippines_uisel
2png_uisel
2sino_uisel
2wake_uisel
At the bottom of each of these bat files you should see
:SUCCESS
PAUSE
D:
CD "D:\CFS3\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun"

Make sure that below "Pause" the correct drive where you game is installed is shown, in my case its D:
Then below that make sure after the CD command your game full install path (not your app data folder) is shown, in my case its D:\CFS3\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun
This needs to be the same in all 7 of the above .bat files

Next a file check
In your appdata folder as well as the 7 bat files, you should have -
6 X "theatre name" _uisel.xml files (these are the not currently in use theatres)
1 X uisel.xml file (this is the current or last used theatre)
as well as a few other files, not important to theatre changing

Inside your game folder, the global_layer folder should have
7 X .bat files (no pathing in these)
7 X _gsl.lib files
7 X .xml files
7 X _global_layer.csv files (+1 ship_locations.csv file)

Please check these above things and come back if you have questions

Also, even when PTO RS is correctly set-up, always check LOCATION before trying to fly.
Sometimes (maybe when changing theatres) the LOCATION will show
the city ID (alpha-numeric) rather than the actual city name (alpha).
Simply click on the LOCATION to fix it. So remember location, location, location!

I tried reinstalling RS from scratch and discovered the root of my original problems.

It wants "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3 Combat Flight Simulator 3" as your vanilla install location.

Mine was "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3 Combat Flight Simulator 3.0"

Never caught the subtle difference before.... :dizzy:

It would install, and partially work, but not entirely.

I also found out the hard way that you can't have any of the RS related folders open on your desktop when you run the Theater Selector batch file or it will corrupt your install.

I get corruption when I change RS Theaters about 20-25% of the time.

It manifests as a few of the folders failing to be swapped and renamed, and it's never the same ones twice. I've scoured through the 42 different sub-routines and they all follow the same pattern without any typos.

Right now I'm thinking it's related to how fast the bat file runs through the code versus the read/write speed of the drive, but that's only because I can't imagine anything else that might be randomly going wrong.

I'm getting better at fixing it, but boy is it annoying. Probably why I've always preferred to just turn them into free standing installs instead.

Thanks Major, for the conversation.
I may have more than one issue.
I'm not an Admin on this old salvaged work computer, only a User, although I do have alot more power than on my "real" work computer. I think that was causing "permission Denied" during the BAT file runs.
I went through and turned off the Run as Admin on the BAT files, game exe, etc, also changed the security settings on main install folder and subfolders, some of the check boxes were blank for "users" yes it took awhile! Now I can get Wake to startup, but the ocean is green and full of trees, its really awesome to have a tree growing through the deck of your carrier!
The other theatres will show the proper splash screens but will crash right when the game should start. BAT file now flashes several "file not found" every time, and very fast as you mentioned above, even when changing back to Pearl, which still works perfectly.

Very interested in a how-to on this--"preferred to just turn them into free standing installs instead"

Thanks, sometimes the splash screen being wrong is my only clue that things are corrupted again.

The file not found message is actually part of how the bat file was written. Each rename command for any given file or folder is duplicated, so the second time it runs it should produce an error because the name has already been changed by the first pass. I suspect that this was done as sort of a double check to reduce the occasional corruption I described above.

I've been looking for ways to use these error messages as an integrity check to alert the user and prevent the game from starting in a corrupted state.
