Lockheed L-1649A Starliner, Version 2.0

For some reason I get this annoying yellow flare from the exhaust. I cut back in the mixture and it's still there. I've seen hundreds of engines in flight and I never saw a yellow exhaust. You be hard pressed to even see a faint blue exhaust showing complete combustion.
Does anybody know how to turn it off on the Lockheed?

In the aircraft.cfg Lights section, look for these lines that control the exhaust flames:

light.5 = 7, 13.758, -18.8, 0.310069, fx_1649A_exh
light.6 = 8, 13.758, 18.8, 0.310069,fx_1649A_exh
light.7 = 2,11.362, -36.56, 1.800,fx_1649A_exh
light.8 = 9,11.362, 36.56,1.800,fx_1649A_exh

Placing 2 slashes in front of these lines should do the trick.

These lights are called out by the throttles749 gauge in the panel.cfg. (Do not comment out the gauge as it also controls other features.)

The gauge invokes the lights based on the condition of the throttle levers.

The yellow comes from the fx_1649A_flameb.bmp in the Effects/Textures folder called out by the fx_1649_exh effect.

Hope this helps.

Oh jeez! You're right Milton. Too many aircraft in me folder and my mouse wheel for double-click is giving out so it scrolls while clicking sometimes. Thanks for correction.:isadizzy:

OK.. that's just plain WIERD! and I know it's Hallowe'en!!

I saw Milton's post: "jkcook,
It looks like you are referring to the L049 aircraft.cfg." so I scrolled back...
saw Helldiver's query but nothing from john...
then John's reply to Milton: "Oh jeez! You're right Milton. Too many aircraft in..."

Went back to the beginning and followed the whole thread... can't see a post from JK that Milton refers to...
are we having residual glitches in the forum still that hide or drop posts??

That's really a wonderful aircraft!!! Thanks a lot :jump:

I have just finished my Lufthansa livery for the Starliner:

I believe the pitch oscillations I was experiencing was due to the vertical speed time constant. I changed it from 2.0 to 1.0, and the oscillations went away.

From what I recall of the many many exchanges on CalClassic during the development process of the Starliner the exhaust stack flames were in fact a real life thing on the R-3350s of the L-1649A.
One of the amusing comments by flight crews when responding to passengers sounding the alarm for engines on fire was to tell them that all is well...and to let them know if they don't see the flames anymore.

I don't know what the colors were since I have never had the pleasure of flying in the real thing.

As for the pitch oscillations at altitude. No such thing for me, in neither one of the different versions.

What are your MP an RPM settings in cruise, and what is your KIAS at the point when the oscillation begin ?? Typically I set MP to 32-35" and the prop rpm to 2200.

Hi Helldiver,

The turbocompound engines of the Super Connies/Starliners and the DC-7 series e.g. were notorious for their flaming exhausts. Those flames caused my uncle's fear of flying: in 1964 he was passenger on a DC-7C flight from Amsterdam to Tokyo and particularly the takeoff scared the hell out of him because of these yellow flames. The nocturnal leg of his journey wasn't a relief for him too because there were a not particularly faint blue flames from the exhausts all the time.

Here are two examples of this phenomenon, one in the dark and one at daytime.

The Lockheed Constellation, as they were known when I was flying them regularly from coast to coast, and not the "L049" never sported yellow flames.
Maybe when they first started but when she had the mixture right, it would be a blue flame. I'm sorry but after many, many trips in Connies, I never saw any yellow flames.
Nor did I see them in any Navy planes when flying with SB2Cs, F4U, F6Fs and F8Fs. Yellow flames would be a sign of incomplete combustion and you'd foul your plugs in a hurry. Your films in daylight the exhaust was not visible.
Where in heck the the name "L049" come from?

Perhaps the Breitling pilots should be told ...

Yep, I've seen many videos and pictures of Connies and they do emit a yellow/orange flame from the exhaust ports.

What in heck do a bunch of watchmakers know about leaing an engine. The next thing we know you'll have TWA pilots winding clocks.

Having same issue. Where do I find this parameter? In the air.cfg under Autopilot I don't see this.

Not sure this is it:

default_vertical_speed=700 // keep this low to avoid excessive VS when A/P is engaged

Normally I do not fly long haul so I do not have planes of this type in my hangar. This one looked so good that I made an exception.

In response to the comments about the VC textures not being based on photos. I prefer it this way. Often when photos are used you get discolorations, shadows and parts where the photo does not fit the model which actually makes it look less realistic.

I did find 1 little glitch though. Whenever I use the DME a black square appears over the left autopilot switches in VC view. Only way to get rid of it is to reload the plane when you used it or leave the DME off. Does this happen on your systems too?
