Making Solomons Rhumba Mesh Compliant

MaskRider

Tiller of Soil
Hi Guys,

After seeing UT's post about his awesome rework of Rabaul to Rhumba's mesh I am inspired to post a progress report on the Solomons rework.
Its going slowly but steadily. I started with Renell and Bellona, then up to San Cristobal, Malaita, Floridas and Russells. Currently Guadalcanal is the center of attention. I wanted to get that North Coast just right including as accurate a rendition of the rivers that flowed in and around Lunga and Koli points as possible. I am just about finished with this part of the job. A few more small tweaks should do it. Next will be redoing the landclass values in and around the airfield locations. Then- the airfields themselves. I am probably going to remove a runway from Henderson and add a new runway at the location of what was called Fighter III. Sliding the old airfields over a little won't do the trick. They will need to be rebuilt from scratch. These new ones will be a tad less elaborate and dense than the current versions. Should be a definite improvement.

I will be doing a nice rendition of the unfinished Japanese field, too.

Here are a couple of screenies of current state of affairs on the North central coast of Guadalcanal. The runway locations are roughed in.

Cheers,
MR

Way to go Chris!

Nice rivers - if you create a separate "river delta" scenery layer, you can use ez landclass & (some, not all) Pactex "river delta" textures to create a more realistic dedicated river look that will blend with the other default textures. It's the same method as the one I used in creating the Caroline atoll sceneries.

But texture work (eye candy) is for later - first get the LWM polys done....:173go1::running:

Hiya Ut,

That sounds very intriguing and I admit that I am not exactly sure I understand the technique you describe or how to achieve the results you are suggesting. I will get your Caroline scenery loaded up and see if I can dope it out. I have often looked at screenshots of your scenery and wondered how you go about achieving the truly remarkable results that you do. Thanks!

Thanks for updating the Solomon Islands MR.

Those darned rivers on the north coast have always been somewhat of a mystery with many improperly named on maps and in battle accounts. It all probably stems from the lack of map coverage when the Marines hit the beach back on August 7, 1942.

Hiya Jagd,

Oh, my lord yes, it must have been a nightmare. The place is criss-crossed by these rivers and hundreds of little tributary/creeks- all of them winding and looping back on them selves. I am sure that during the fighting it must have been darn near impossible at times for one group of guys to accurately describe to another group of guys just where the heck they were.

I am only including the larger streams in this scenery- the streams that are included on most of the West-Point type battle atlases for Guadalcanal. But if one looks at the location in GoogleEarth the maze of little tributaries and old bypassed river loops still containing water are readily apparent.

Cheers,
MR

Below are the maps I used to get clear detail on the streams as they looked at the time of the campaign. Overlaid these on top of GoogleEarth captures- which were inturn overlaid ontop of my original SRTM Water_Body.shp file project map in G2K. The first two maps come from the US ARMY, Center for Military History (CMH). Forget where the 3rd came from- maybe the same place.

MaskRider,

This truly outstanding (not to mention exciting) stuff you guys are working on. Keep up the good effort! :salute:

Hiya Rami,

Thanks very much. I will keep forging ahead as smartly as these dusty old grey cells and creaking bones will allow!

Thanks for all your efforts keeping fresh straw on the deck and the ash bins cleaned out down here in the basement!:salute:

This is great news. Thanks so much.

I've been working on USMC Aces in the Solomons so this will surely be used.

Glad to here it, Talon. Also, as I pointed out earlier- an effort will be made to make these new Guadalcanal fields more frame-rate-friendly -> campaign-friendly. I hope. ;^)

MAPS

MR;
I think that third is the battlemap shown at the same place as the others. I did find some maps with all the rivers listed but it is a little rough one for me to magnify to correlate what features define what river.
Here are some charts I found.

I did find this posting that defines the difficulties and includes some relevant info concerning the island.
http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USMC/Guadalcanal/USMC-M-Guadalcanal-1.html

Specifically it states starting on page 15 that NO reliable maps existed of Guadalcanal! All there were were some nauticals to guide traders. It continues to describe the terrain. Might help some.

Here is a site I found that might interest you.

Maps prepared by the Japanese Army pre-during WW2. Problem, it is in Japanese!

It is the PIA again. I re-found the topo with the rivers marked here; http://www.nps.gov/history/history/...ontent/usmc/pcn-190-003117-00/images/fig4.jpg

BTW;
This site, beginning here, has a whole chronology, with maps, of the campaign. http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/npswapa/extcontent/usmc/pcn-190-003117-00/sec1.htm

MR

MR & Worthless your Welcome as always!:salute: Those other charts addys I had posted are by the Australians and are nautical charts with some elevations and alot of depths indicated. I am sure you will remember how to read them! If you want anything else I will see what I can find as I sit here and remend after the doctors have been rumaging around inside my shoulder again. These guys really need to put a zipper on this thing!
