Mission Builders Thread

Mebbe dis tread could be a Shtickie or sumpsing!?

If so there are two sticky threads no longer needed they are

1. ETO 1.02 Update ...the 1.02 update has been eliminated with the 1.2 update.

2. CFS3 Modders and developers thread

Firestorms

1.2 includes two facilities that will recreate the firestorms caused by British night bombing on German cities and industrial targets.

Firestorm - this facility contains numerous scattered fires of many various sizes with very realistic smoke that climbs to several thousand feet. This facility also includes a glare/flicker effect which will cause your bomber to reflect the light of the burning fires all the way up to 25,000 ft. The fires and smoke are clearly visible from 20 and 25 thousand feet.

Firestorm_small - smaller version of Firestorm without the high illumination/flicker feature.

These two facilities can be used in multiple quantities to creat large burning areas at night. They can be placed on top of the built in buildings in the terrain and be used in conjunction with facility Bomb_Explosions.

These would be most normally be used when you want to simulate a player in a bomber stream coming late to the target after it was already ablaze. The player can pick out the target at night up to 10 miles away with these fires.

Weather and Wind in ETO

1.2 contains new weather files for mission building.

Variable weather
There are several new variable weather files that make the weather change from one location to another. The MB can select from England, foggy, cloudy or rain with France Clear, or England Clear and France with bad weather. Italy and Corsica have variable weather as well.

Specialty Mission Weather
Operation Leader and Operation Dragoon have variable weather that changes from the area of the task force to the target area. The weather features wind for carrier launches of sufficient strength to launch a fully loaded Hellcat or Tarpon with no wind present in the target area. The mission builder can use these mission templates and delete other items and keep the localized wind to make entirely new missions for carrier escort missions, convoy cover and anti sub patrols and have the wind available for carrier launches.

Carrier Wind and runway Crosswinds
1.2 provides the MB with 4 preset wind weather files for use in doing carrier missions and crosswind takeoff and landing missions. These weather files are labeled
Low Cumulus Wind 3
Low Cumulus Wind 6
Low Cumulus Wind 12
Low Cumulus Wind 20
This wind will be present in the entire mission and is not localized. This wind is all blowin from 270 degrees. To plan carrier takeoffs simply select one of the drop deck carriers and face it on a heading of 270 with the speed at .01 for the first and 2nd WP. You can then place your player aircraft on the deck for a carrier takeoff at mission start. The mission must be edited in notepad to put the aircraft at zero speed and altitude.
Crosswind takeoffs and landings can be achieved by selecting airfields with the desired runway headings IE a runway heading of 360/180 will generate a 90 degree crosswind. You can make your own wind weather file by simply taking one of these files open it in notepad and change the wind headng and strength. Be sure and change the subtitle located in the xnml file as well as the exterior file name. the wind will be 180 degrees reversed from the heading in the file. A heading of 090 in the wind file generates a wind coming from 270 degrees. Be sure and upload the new wind file with your mission.

ETO Spawns

1.2 provides a wide range of aircraft spawns for your use in building missions. To utilize these spawns simply select facility and from the drop down menu select mission_target_facility_ 8 or 10 or 12 or 20.
the numerical factor 8 thru 20 dictates the distance from the player that the spawn will activate. Select "spawns once" and if you want the spawn to be hidden from the player check "hidden". There are aircraft spawns that can also serve as mission goals and are name accordingly. As you gain experience you can begin to build your own spawns. There is no need to upload the spawns you use in a mission if they were in they were included in the 1.2 install.

ETO Specialized AI Aircraft

For added immersion 1.2 offers a range of specialized AI (non player)aircraft that can be placed in missions, some examples are:

B-17s with assembly and recall flares, B-25 assembly flare ships, crippled B-25 with engine fire that fires a red distress flare signaling wounded on board.

There are also contrail aircraft included which are designed to be placed and are limited to high altitudes that will produce beautiful contrails in the sky above the player as eye candy. By mixing bombers and fighters you can create wonderful long lasting swirls that look very real as in the battle of Britain.

In conclusion I have tried to offer up some of the more significant new components but there are more than can be described in this thread.

Also to improve the function of the players wingmen you may want to sometimes designate the formation as "recon" the wingmen will then do anything the player (flight leader) asks them to do. For example the Player can send two wingmen to intercept fighters while sending the rest down to hit the ground target. Even though the mission goal may be a ground target this enables the player to use his wingmen at his discretion and task them to hit either ground targets (if ordnance is installed) or intercept attacking fighters.

I hope you will find this thread of some use in your mission building and will prove to be a shortcut for you to locate and use the various new features of ETO 1.2.

For the more experienced mission builders feel free to create your own facilities, effects, spawns or other items and mod any of the exisiting 1.2 items or effects for your custom missions. Be sure and upload your new items along with your mission with a clear read me for the player. In the event you need a new aircraft with a special skin contact Capt. Winters for possible permission to upload your new aircraft based on an existing ETO model. We will always try to accomodate reasonable aircraft requests that are well done. Rob will help you insure that your new aircraft meets the ETO standards we require, and the necessary permissions are granted. We are hopeful that many of the new items/aircraft that are developed can be used in future ETO updates.

Best Regards and have a lot of fun with your new ETO 1.2 install. We built it for you to use, explore and enjoy.

Best Regards

James

Thank you on behalf of all of us.
And Steve..again thank you for those pearls.

Nonato

Nonato,

Thanks you for all you have done and we are looking for more of your exciting missions with the new 1.2. Let me know anytime you need help with one.

Best Regards

Steve

Does the crosswind @ take-off slow or disperse once yer aloft?? (I hope)

Pop,

The wind will be present throughout the mission unless you make it localized with coordinates which can easily be done. You can even have different winds at different locations just like the clouds. The carrier wind in Operation Dragoon and Operation Leader are restricted to the area around the carriers and are not present anywhere else in the mission. It is also possible to build wind that is restricted by altitude and could be placed in a Bomber mission at say between 15,000 and 20,000 feet but zero on the ground.
