More AF Corsair Repaints

Great link collection!

Here's another one, for a weathered cockpit:

And there's another one with the obligatory honey-photo I never uploded, which I'll do if there's interest:

For anyone looking for some inspiration on where to fly these, based on reality:

Airpower Unlimited, the company that restored the FG-1D's featured in a few of my repaints (Gary Kohs/Factory Fresh, Texas Flying Legends/Kathleen, Olympic Flight Museum) is based at the Jerome County Airport in Idaho.

When the Gary Kohs/Factory Fresh Corsair was purchased by Provenance Fighter Sales, it was based at French Valley Airport, CA, and visited the Chino airshow in 2007 and Nellis AFB in 2006.

The Vintage Wings of Canada Corsair is based at the Gatineau-Ottawa Executive Airport in Quebec.

The Friedkin family/Comanche Fighters Corsair painted in VMF-214 "Blacksheep" markings is based at their private airfield Comanche Ranch, in Eagle Pass, TX (which is included in FSX, but is very basic).

The Naval Air Reserve Minneapolis FG-1D of course was based at Wold Chamberlain Field, what is today Minneaoplis-St. Paul International, but I've also got a photo of another NAS Minneapolis Corsair visiting MCAS El Toro, CA in 1949.

The Olympic Flight Museum Corsair is based at the Olympia Airport in Olympia, WA.

The Texas Flying Legends Museum Corsair is based at Ellington Field, in Houston, TX, but also travels all over the country each year, including stops at Wiscasset, Maine and Minot, ND, and many more.

For the flight dynamics with the stock AF Corsair, I use those released by Fliger747, available here in the SOH file library, the file name: Air File for Milviz_A2A Corsair.zip (or you can simply search for Fliger747 and it will come up at the top)

Those were the flight dynamics which were originally supposed to be released with the aircraft (when under the management of MilViz), but for some reason were vastly modified in the AF release. However, they don't work correctly, as they are when downloaded, as some of the sections of the Aircraft.cfg file have to be changed to reflect some of the changes to the model after A2A/AF took it over.

I hope Tom doesn't mind, but for those who have never used Tom's flight dynamics with the AF Corsair, for the sake of not knowing what to modify, simply install these, as they are all already setup properly and cover all three variants (remember to save/re-apply all of your repaint entries).

John,

I am a bit confused here. The Air File for Milviz_A2A Corsair.zip contains just one air file while the fliger 727 zip contains three air files that are for the 3 different variations.
Which one do I use? The header for in the aircraft.cfg (F4U1-A_milviz_A2A.zip) = Milviz Corsair V 1.04

fliger747_corsair_fde.zip = 3 folders with seperate corsair.air files. :dizzy:

EDIT:

I think I have it sorted out.

The F4U1-A_milviz_A2A.zip contains
aircraft config file that contains:

Milviz Corsair V 1.04

[fltsim.0]
title=Corsair
sim=corsair
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=white
kb_checklists=
kb_reference=
ui_manufacturer="Milviz" <<<<<<<<<<<< Miliviz?
ui_type=Corsair
ui_variation=test

While the fliger747_corsair_fde.zip
Has Three aircraft cfg files (One for each folder or model of the corsair) and reads:
fltsim.0]
title=Corsair 1D 1 <<<< This entry changes with appropriate model of corsair
sim=corsair
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=VF-84
kb_checklists=
kb_reference=
ui_manufacturer=Chance Vought
ui_type=F4U-1D
ui_variation=VF-84
ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop"
ui_createdby="Aircraft Factory" <<<<< Different then ^ file.
atc_airline=Navy
description=Chance Vought F4U-1D
atc_id=167
atc_flight_number=167
atc_heavy=0
atc_id_color=0000000000
visual_damage=0
ui_typerole="Single Engine Prop"
ui_createdby="Milviz"
atc_airline=Military
atc_type=F4U-1A
atc_model=Corsair
description= Chance Vought F4U-1A
atc_id=f4u000
atc_flight_number=v1.01
atc_heavy=0
atc_id_color=0000000000
visual_damage=0

So, I guess the fliger747_corsair_fde.zip is the one to use, yes? I tried this one and when it lands, the tires plant on the runway without a bounce.

Gray Eagle,

The Aircraft Factory Corsair, when it is installed, has four separate folders within the SimObjects/Airplanes folder, and these include a folder for AF_F4U-1A, a folder for AF_F4U-1C, and a folder for AF_F4U-1D, being the three different variants. The Fliger747 flight dynamics files which I've attached, only come as one version (to cover all of the variants), but you must place each appropriate set of files in each folder so that they apply to each variant (each has slightly different Aircraft.cfg files because of different paint schemes/models - and that is the only difference).

When modifying Tom's FDE file to work properly with the AF Corsair, the contact points, cockpit viewpoint, and a couple of the reference points (weight and balance section) have to be changed, and that is what I did and provide as attached above, but I also kept the same paint scheme entries as they are in the original product Aircraft.cfg files.

John,

So I did the right thing and used the fliger747_corsair_fde.zip file for the FDE fix. I just wanted to make sure. :encouragement:

John,could you please do a paint from the restored Corsair of the OFM?
I just read about her in a German Airplane Classic magazine.
BuNr92436 of the VMF-213 in duty on the USS Saidor in 1945.

These latest repaints are actually a follow-up to those first two I did, of the Olympic Flight Museum and Texas Flying Legends Corsairs. They all use the same/similar specular map technique, modified VC textures, and modified wheel well, landing gear, engine, drop tank and rocket textures.

John, got a question for you.

Is "Kathleen" an A or D model?

Reason why I ask is that it's a D model, but the instructions direct the install to the A model.

"Place the "Texture.N209TW Kathleen" folder into the "AF_F4U-1A" folder."

In reality, the real aircraft is an FG-1D, however it was restored to look like an F4U-1A or an FG-1A, by fitting a braced canopy to the aircraft and a 1944-period tri-color scheme. The real aircraft also has had one of the early center-line mountings/pylons fitted, as would be found on an F4U-1A and FG-1A in the Pacific, but it also still retains the FG-1D/F4U-1D dual pylons. I have it setup for the F4U-1A model, so that it can have the braced canopy (and the center-line drop tank texture is also setup for the F4U-1A, including mimicking the same oil stain as found on the depth charge that was slung under the aircraft on the center-line mount, following the completion of its restoration). Despite straying a bit from its true identity, it is an award-winning restoration, being one of the top three most authentic Corsairs flying today - all original/period hardware, radios, correct primers and paints, purely stock/original cockpit, all of the period inspection stamps and stencils (the other two most authentic Corsairs flying today are of course the Vintage Wings of Canada (former Gary Kohs) Corsair, and the Olympic Flight Museum Corsair - all three of which were restored by Airpower Unlimited).

Some really exceptional photos of that restoration can be seen here (covering three pages): http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/photos/N209TW:54612:3.html
And here (during its restoration): http://www.airpowerunlimited.net/project/3

Thanks again, guys! Here is another one which should be just about ready to release, a scheme that I've always thought looked interesting. This a Naval Reserve scheme of 1946 through to about 1948/49, so is an intermediate scheme between the 1945 factory scheme and the 1955 Naval Reserve scheme. In the 1946 through about 1948/49 time frame, this is how all of the Corsairs looked within the Naval Reserve Units in the US, operating from bases such as NAS Glenview, New York, Minneapolis, and in this case Livermore, all following the same layout of markings. The stars & bars on the fuselage are painted over (you can see the slight difference in shade of paint, under certain lighting conditions, where the star & bars were), and at this time (1946 to be exact) the red bars had not yet been added to the insignias. Also, just about everything got painted blue (prop dome, landing gear, wheels), and thus it adds a very business-like feel overall.

Any ETA on this one, John??

When discussing the VMF-214 "Blacksheep Squadron" F4U-4 Corsair a couple days back, I was trying to hunt down this photo, but couldn't find it. It however just popped up on Facebook again today. It shows the aircraft flying in formation with one of the Harriers based at Yuma, operated by the present-day VMF-214 "Blacksheep Squadron" (probably something that could be recreated in FSX).

Warhorse, I'll upload that one tonight - I have since made the orange markings yellow, as I believe they probably were instead. It's based off of this original photo and the box artwork for a Hasegawa kit (not much else to go on, besides other B&W photos from the period of similar schemes). I'll be including both 'clean' and 'dirty' versions. Note: some of the late F4U-1D's and FG-1D's had shorter aerial masts/antennae near the firewall location than depicted in the Aircraft Factory Corsair, which is more in-line with earlier period/production - and many didn't have that mast at all.
