MS FLIGHT Updated Site!

"Never say never"....old quote.

I didn't say "never", I said "ever"

I can easily imagine MS implementing an add-on "app" store similar to Apple for the i-Phone, i-Pad, etc... MS gets a bit of the pie every time an add-on sells. Surprised they didn't do something like it earlier.

...and freeware will be scanned thoroughly before getting approved.

The horror, the horror...

well at least we know one thing ... it'll have a sterman in one shape or form included :bump:

...and photoreal trees.

To me it looks like a real cinematic sky at the beginning of the video with a speed-cut to some kind of pre-rendered video.

What makes you believe that? It's been plainly stated now in at least two official sources that it is a PC only title...

(emphasis in RED mine)

That seems pretty unambiguous to me!

As a software developer working with the MS environment, I'm quite adept at reading between the lines in any MS announcement.

With “Microsoft Flight” we’re approaching the virtual flight genre from the ground up, with the focus on the universal appeal of the experience of Flight. We believe the simplicity of “Microsoft Flight” perfectly captures that vision while welcoming the millions of existing Flight Simulator fans. The new “Microsoft Flight” retains the full fidelity simulation longtime fans have come to expect while offering all players a whole new look and feel, a wide range of new game play and challenges, persistent experiences and social connectivity.

They are redesigning the interface (the whole new look and feel bit), while maintaining the flight dynamics ( The new “Microsoft Flight” retains the full fidelity simulation). So, what changes are you expecting to make that are not incremental but leap-frogging? On-line play? It already does that. Any change will be incremental.

For me the phrase is "We believe the simplicity of “Microsoft Flight” perfectly captures that vision while welcoming the millions of existing Flight Simulator fans." That means something to attract new people to the franchise who are not flight simulator fans. Those people don't like to bother pushing switches and setting the prop revs before taking off. All they want is to jump in and fly. I know a lot of them. They love the arcade feel of Ace Combat or Hawk. If you are going to make an arcade mode (which I think is possible) then what better place to use it than in an already established online market as XBOX Live.

Heck you have The Sims for XBOX 360, and that was a PC only game too. Why not a console flight sim?

These are speculations and will miss the target by at least a hundred miles, but I feel that MS is aiming for something like that. MS will say anything you want to hear, but it will do anything it wants even if it contradicts itself.

You have to ask yourself: Why is Microsoft trying to calm me by saying nothing is going to change, when all they needed to do was just announce a new version of Microsoft Flight Simulator that now will be called Microsoft Flight? Why the firemen if there is no fire?

I think - but this is just me - one of the most interesting questions is how much backward compatible it will be to FSX. I mean, look at all these wonderful aircraft and sceneries we have now. On the other hand, if you want to have a real improvement in scenery (--> outerra !) and things like flight physics, you have to break with old methods. Oh well!

I just hope they don't choke the addon designers by channeling the sales through their own system (like steam).

I also hope that they build the new sim with a successor to CFS2 in mind.

Cheers,
Mark

Don't shoot me for being contrary, but it seems to me there's a significant upside to a Steam-type network for add-ons. Yes, we'll undoubtedly have to sell them for less, but there's a potential for reaching a vastly larger audience. One of the biggest drawbacks about the current system is the fairly small pool of users we're reaching with scenery, planes, and so forth. Exposing an add-on store through the game's UI could greatly extend our reach.

I'm still optimistic about Flight where third-party devs are concerned.

At the end of the day, we still don't know what we don't know. I reserve judgement until more information is released. It does look pretty, though.

Well, we both are software developers working with the MS environment, yet still see two opposite points of view. Only time will tell who's crystal ball is the more accurate. :ernae:

Well, I went to view the site and got hit with a drive-by update from MS :monkies:. I have a sound assigned when any folders are opened

and as I'm viewing the vid my computer is going beserk - like a virus is being installed. Check things out and find it's a silverlight install which

can't be removed - no prompts to accept/reject, no nothing - why does MS continue to do such stupid things...... Leaves a bad taste in the

mouths of competent computer users.

Hey! :wavey:
Nice to meet a fellow developer that has to deal with M$ on a daily basis. We'll see later who was more accurate.

Let's see, Aces was shot down, and we moaned and nashed our teeth. Now MS is previewing a new flightsim, and we are bemoaning the fact that we don't know what it will be like.

As far as I'm concerned, if I don't like it (after reading the reviews [after it comes out, mind you]), I won't buy it. I'll just motor on with FSX.

But it could be great! The "unwashed" are not going to be happy with crappy graphics, poor performance, or "unrealism". So, maybe it will be a positive step forward. Maybe not, but then we have FSX.

(Oh, and I do realize one of the great pleasures of being a PC simmer is speculating about, trashing, and "fanboying" about new simulations on the horizon!) :icon_lol:

I am not anticipating much, but we will just have to wait and see.. If it turns out to be good, then great! If not, then maybe it will be time to walk away.

i do not disagree with that statement one piece
i use railworks through steam and its a good way of operating
and i can still add freeware and payware from other vendors

I'll also wait and see. However, If I can't make a plane and add it to the sim, on my own without needing any one else, I will not buy and just stick with FSX. Or X-Plane, if the eyecandy ever rivals MS.
