New B-29 Fleet

The islands look great MR. Whatever you do next will be greatly appreciated by all I'm sure.

I take back what I said about the B-29 running out of fuel. Ghostrider has fixed the problem. I made a mission from Chengtu to Nagasaki and back - 16 and a half hours at 55% throttle - and the gauge showed zero only 30 miles short of Chengtu. A return trip to Japan from the Marianas should be no problem.

Iwo Jima

MR,

Here is a pretty good map of Iwo Jima from my little collection of stuff. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to expand to its full size when uploaded. I'll shoot you a copy in an E-mail.

That is looking superb, MR! I am, of course going to have to vote for Iwo Jima with the B-29 airfields!:jump:

I have a special place in my heart for Iwo - my great uncle PFC Thomas Nichols, went ashore right under Suribachi with 2/28 Marines, 5th MarDiv (The "Flag Raiser" battalion) Sadly, I never got to meet him. He's the short guy in the back with the arrow over his head. Looks all of 18 years old. The back of the other picture just says "Tinian 1944."

Bigger / Better

Jag, try uploading this map again, but check the [INLINE] box at the bottom of the upload box - it might give a bigger result.

I tried running the first one thru PSP9 to clean it up, but it pixelizes if enlarged... :isadizzy:

Well, as long as we're talkin' bout new places to park our Supers, let me propose Saipan International Airport, formerly known as Isley Field back in the days of the mighty Supers.

Originally Aslito Airfield, the base was seized by the United States Army 27th Infantry Division on the night on June 16–17, 1944 during the Battle of Saipan. The field was renamed Isley Field after United States Navy Commander Robert H. Isley who was killed on June 13, 1944, while strafing the base.

Once in American hands, Isley Field was expanded considerably to support Twentieth Air Force B-29 Superfortress operations. The XXI Bomber Command had been assigned the overall responsibility of the B-29 operations out of the Marianas bases, and Isley Field was to be used by the 73rd Bombardment Wing (which consisted of the 497th, 498th, 499th, and 500th Bombardment Groups).
The first B-29 arrived on Saipan on October 12, 1944, and by November 22, over 100 B-29s were at Isley.

Iwo Map

SC,

I don't see any "In-Line" option in my upload box.

The file is well over a meg in size, so it's probably automatically reduced by the software for the site. Shoot me a PM with your E-mail and I'll get it to you if you want it.

I will soon have a brand spanking new Iwo Jima island ready to build on. Maybe I should go ahead and jump up to Iwo for the next airfield build?

I already rebuilt the island and airfield at Pagan- the 6th island up the chain north of Saipan. Very rudimentary airstrip at the moment. It looks very cool, though.

JP's mesh really makes show pieces of these volcanic islands.

Iwo next? I think maybe yes. What I could use, if anyone has it- is a good picture/diagram or two of what Iwo looked liked when developed for B-29 and P-51 traffic. Got plenty of her with the Japanese air strips.
Hi Chris,
Would it be incredibly greedy of us to ask you to do 2 sets of runways for Iwo Jima? One basic set with just the Japanese strips (something to invade as it were) and a second full out gonzo B-29 friendly post-invasion set?

Thanks
Gavin

I've got this one Chris. The resolution is not very good but maybe you can spiffy it up a bit in a paint program.

From what I can tell...it names a north field, central, and south.

PS, those shots of the volcanic islands in lod9 look sweet. :ernae:

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all of the input and assistance. The maps and pictures of Iwo are a big help as are the two shots of Isley Field- looking forward to tackling that one!

I am leaning toward making Iwo the next airfield up (redo the Japanese version also)- followed by Isley Field, Saipan; West Field, Tinian; Marpi Point, Saipan and finally Kagman (East) Field, Saipan.

Again, many thanks!
Chris

those pics are fantastic Chris, thank you so much, indeed with the mesh and your fixed coasts, it is just about perfect

what texture are you using for the ocean? that looks very good indeed.

Glad to you like them. I figured it is the least I can do. Don't want JP's Lod9 mesh to go to waste!

I have completed the masking/landclass rework for 13 of the 14 islands/island groups north of Saipan up to the northern boundary of JP's mesh.

Just have the Hata-Jima group left to do.

Then it will be a mid July 1945 version of Iwo- by July 12, 1945 it had a 9800 foot pave runway for B-29s as well as several other runways and a full tilt P-51 fighter field.

I am also going to make a nice new version of Japanese Iwo, pre Feberuary 1945.

MR

Oh, FYI, those water textures are the stock CFS2 textures.

I know this is totally the wrong thread for this but since we're on the topic of B-29s and building bases for them...

Here is a screenie of progress on Iwo.

I think I finally have an island outline I can live with- a nice compromise between historical accuracy and the constraints imposed by the mesh. Likewise with the land class.

I also have the Japanese airfields "penciled" in. Not gonna get real fancy with them. Just add hard runways, roads and scenery objects and pretty much leave it at that.

The high res version of that map supplied by Jagd has really come in handy.

BTW, big question: anybody know of a black sand "perennial" shoreline texture I can use here? Sure would add to the immersion factor!

Here is the screenie:

I do indeed mean exactly that!

How do I get my hands on the little buggers and how does one make use of them without having them take over all of the shorelines? Place them into the texture folder associated with the bgl's scenery folder?

PS I thought I noticed this shoreline in one of your Tinian screenshots.

Hi Chris, Sorry for the late reply...I took a little .

The vshoresu.bmp in the screenie is a ho-made deal. It's one of several that I've been messing around with. I can shoot it your way via email.

As far as getting multiple shorelines...Jean Bomber would be the one to talk to. Just for an example, I took the vshoresu.bmp made by me and added it to an install with JB's Truk scenery. This is his outer reef area. Definitely two distinctive shores show up.

I flunked out of Ground 2K 101. :icon_lol: Seems my patience for the unknown errors isn't up to snuff.

Anywho, that's the lowdown...

Dave

Hiya Dave,

Yeah, along with many other scenery building skills, JP is way ahead of me when it come to the finer point of working with G2K.

That is a great looking piece of outer reef going on there. Wow. Looking at it and trying to figure just what all is happening there. I'll have to sit down at JP's knee again sometime soon and get some pointers.

If you would email your custom vshoresu.bmp file I would definitely like to experiment with it. I think I will try using it in the "texture" sub-folder associated with the MR Marianas "scenery" sub-folder and see how that works to keep it isolated from the rest of the world.

Thanks,
Chris

PS Got some hard runways placed for the Japanese Iwo airfields.

MR,

I think the lesson I learnt with the waterclass I used on the Andamans, I think the sim reads & loads in a priority order:-

Any textures called for by the bgl & loaded in the "texture" folder of your custom scenery
- if nothing there, looks in the default texture folder & SCENEDB/ WORLD/ TEXTURE folders.

So, if you put a black sand "vshoresu.bmp" in the Iwo Texture folder, it will see this first & use it in the game, BUT ONLY for the bgls called out in your custom scenery - everywhere else it will use the default.:isadizzy:

If you don't have a "vshoresu.bmp" in the folder, but the scenery bgl calls for it, CFS 2 goes looking in the SCENEDB/ WORLD/ TEXTURE & CFS2/ TEXTURE folders, & uses the "vshore.bmp" it finds there.

So, for everywhere else it will load the default beach, but for Iwo it will load the version in the Iwo texture folder.
This allows us the possibility of developing a variety of different shore styles - I'm trying to develop a mangrove swamp "vshore" (no beach, not much surf) at present. The killer is getting the transpency just right so it shows the land & whitecaps only, otherwise you need a neutral sea colour that goes with all the different possibilities. See the whitesand bmp in my recent packs & view the transparancy to see what I mean.

Just to help illustrate ...

screenies show NW tip of Sumatra

The offshore islands sit in my "Sabang" scenery draft, & this doesn't have any custom textures, so the coastlines use the default vshoresu.bmp.

The mainland is from my "Sumatra" scenery draft, & I've mocked up a quick black sand version of vshoresu.bmp to illustrate the difference.
