New FSX P-38!

Some of you may remember me a few years back as the guy who did the Sky Unlimited P-38 series. I also did a bunch of work in IL2 and im sure you have been seeing my work in other aircraft for many company's. Also, im sure you have been reading about Milviz's P-38!

No, this isent yet ANOTHER P-38, this IS the Milviz P-38. Or MY new FSX P-38 im working on for Milviz. Colin is FINALLY letting me post about it, and I wanted to share with EVERYONE!!!!

So here is the status. The external is almost done. Just tweaking the skin and getting it in-game. Its looking GREAT! As thats going on, im wrapping up the cockpit. Modeling is done, and I got some base color in it. I wanted to show everyone a test render, and get some feedback.

Please note, this is a test render. Im trying to get a feel for the color pallet, and some feedback on color matching. Also its a good test for the dirt mapping. What your seeing is rendered with nice shadows and reflections, but that stuff can and will be baked into the skin, like my other projects *caugh* cats and hogs *caugh*, and will look close to this in FSX. Also, there is no text or gauges yet. That will be painted in after baking.

So please, give me some feedback on the color's and dirt. I am also running all my work through DCC to get his expert feedback. This is a representation of a vintage warbird, so no new radio's or G.1000 guys ;) Time to pull out your knee board.

Hopefully soon, I will have some pix of the external in-game so you guys can get a good look at her.

Texturing wise this looks awesome. One small not on the control wheel. Here's a closeup shot on this wheel as being used apparently on the later versions. Model wise it isn't 100% correct I think?

Taken from Squadron Signal's Walk Around series.

And the earlier wheel, kind of cool looking eh? No chance we'll get to see any earlier models? Pwetty pwease? ;)

Thanks for this early preview. Again it looks pretty awesome and let's hope you'll achieve a similar look in a final sim version! :ernae:

The left switch on the yoke is for dive brakes. That will be modeled on the L models. This cockpit is for the J.

Very, very, very, very very, very very, very excited!!!! Did I say I was very excited?:icon_lol: Can't wait for this one!! Looks great to me.

Awesome news. The Hellcat has some of the best VC textures I've seen, so I'm glad this is getting same treatment. I wish more guys did baked lighting. The dirt mapping, look and feel in the Hellcat VC is masterful, and by the looks of it this appears to be about the same, so looking A+. I'm not aware of the "hog", or what that might be, but so far this one is looking to be as nice as the Cat, and that's saying a lot. As much as I hate to say it, I hope the rest of this package will do these textures and model justice, because I felt the totally awesome Hellcat textures and model were spoiled by substandard everything else. Anyway the VC looks amazing so far.

Gibbage: Glad to see both you and DCC working on this project. Yes I well remember the previous P-38 and your work In "'IL". FSX provides an even better pallate for the artist, though along the path one must dodge the ocassional slings and arrows.

Cheers: Tom

It looks just like a P-38! :jump:

I always liked the SU P-38s, even better than the AH ones. I'm sure they will be even better in FSX!

Gibbage,
Since MILVIZ isn't doing a P-38E/F/G/H model, could you PLEASE include an early variant :ques: :engel016:

Color is very nicely done, Gib....it has a flat finish to it that doesn't overwhelm the cockpit...

Looking forward to this one!

Thanks guys.

About the early models. Market and demand dictates what we do. If sales do well on the J/L, then im sure Colin would have me do the F G and H's. Currently with Aces (my former employer) down, the market is a bit iffy, so this will test things out.

Basically, im saying this. If you want a early model, buy 3 copy's and have all your fiends and family buy 3 each ;) Heh. Just kidding! 2 each is fine...

As for some of the other things im doing, in what little "off" time I have from Colins whip cracking, I am working on more IL2 aircraft for fun. I just did a B-25J 8 gun solid nose strafer thats already in-game (working bugs out) and will do a P-38 F later.

Also, im doing video tutorials on how to model aircraft for flight sims on Youtube.

I'm with Panther on this one! The early war 38 is my favorite. Something to tool around the Solomon Islands with and land at Henderson Field.......that would be nice!!

I have a personal fondness for the late-war big mouths myself. I have spent most of my life around Jolting Josy/23 Skidoo, and even know Steve Hinton and his son personally. But you cant help but fall in love with Glacier Girl the moment you set eyes on her!!! DCC can also attest to this, that she is the MOST immaculate aircraft I have EVER seen!!!!! Not a single rivit out of place, or warped panel. She looks BETTER then what she did hot off the Burbank factory floor. Simply amazing.

The biggest problem is, that there are simply to many changes from the J/L to the F. Once they went from G to J, its a new beast. Also the cockpit is almost totally differant. Back in the days when we had 5000 polygons to work with, it was easy. Now the demand for detail has made big sweeping packs rather hard to justify. Again, it all depends on market.

Here is a question. How would you want the early models?

A. Free add-on (CANT happen, just to costly in time)
B. Paid add-on (extra in addition to the late models)
C. A seperate product.

Again, im not promising anything. Im just trying to get a little market research and feedback from the users. Sometimes its just better to ask, then assume, but most people are never in a position to ask the customers what they want.

Ah Gibbage,
I appreciate you doing this but......nevermind, it's just not worth it...

- And as you said, the market in a large drives what you build...

I do realize that it would require a virtual new model from scratch....No need to do so
onna' count of a few requests...

Besides, we can always still fly the early models in FS2004 :)
