War On The Sea.

I think it's one of my favorite Pacific theater strategy games I've played. Centers around Guadalcanal, but the map covers a much larger area.

I've played the campaigns from both sides several times. Different strategies each time. My favorite part is planning out torpedo runs like these.

Ah, Ok ! Thanks Forest ! It's not like you can 'fly' those Turkey's, can you ? Just external view animation ?.....

Thanks ! (y)

Correct. All the aircraft, ships, & subs are controllable, but only from external. For the torp runs I preset the attack altitude and attack angle, spread, & formation and let them alone. I'll sometimes stear them away after the drop to get them out if the AA as soon as possible.

Thanks, Forest ! Once i had a similar sort of game but the thing i liked most about it was the 'Museum Mode' with which you could just have a look at the ships from fairly close by. Does this WOTS game have something like that too ?

Not in this one. You can zoom in fairly close, but that's just about right as the models are not to the level of super close inspection. In fact, my only complaint about WOTS since day one is that all of the aircraft that historically have twin guns in their turrets, only have one barrel showing. You can see that in the screens above.

There's a new, similar title coming from the resurrected MicroProse, Task Force Admiral. I've been following the development for a couple of years and it looks like a dream for those of us who enjoyed the tactical parts of "1942: Pacific Air War." (Though this one, again, doesn't let you actually fly the planes.)

They're launching a Kickstarter soon for a physical edition with 90's MicroProse-style box and manuals. It should have a lot more details on the game:

Tons of screenshots and information about the game, posted over the last 4 years, on my favorite non-sim gaming forum (like S-O, mostly old farts who still fly sims and play games):

I just added this one to my Steam Wishlist. Thanks for the heads-up.

It's on there with another upcoming Micropose title, "Sea Power: Naval Combat In The Missile Age". Vigilantes, Corsairs, & Phantoms, oh my!
I would own it already, but I'm waiting to see if they pull off the saved feature that they say is on the way. The lack of that kept me from really getting into Cold Waters.

It's interesting that those of us that have been simmers since the flightsim golden era of the early 90's still hold 1942: The Pacific Air War in a special place.

Thanks Forest, that's a pity. Certainly with todays technology it must be possible to create stunning looking battleships and such just to look at 'em as they defy the storms on the high seas. You know, CGI like in movies but now we get to play with 'em ! ;-)

I bought a Apple TV subscription just to see that WWII movie at sea 'Greyhound' with Tom Hanks as Commander. They build just the bridge of his Fletcher-class destroyer USS "Keeling", the rest is CGI. Some time ago now. I don't think it turned out Tom Hanks' best movie but the CGI i thought was extremely well done and very overwhelming. I won't stop looking for something like that to play with on our precious computers ;-)

Might never happen of course. The average customer of this kind of games wants explosions and sinking ships and all that. I'd just enjoy looking at perfect models of 'em on a perfect simulation of the sea in all kinds of weather. I DO have my perfect digital aircraft models now so that's one thing. (i still can't believe what i see here on my monitor sometimes. Makes putting up with the annoying MSFS2024 bugs and omissions just about bearable. Hehe )
