P-38

Here are the latest exterior shots of the P-38J. The exterior has been vetted and approved by David Copely and we're now putting the final paint on the VC!!!!

Then, it's off for coding... and a surprise on that front awaits!

Just a question, is that supposed to be glossy metal or painted grey?

Either way, it has the same speckled look that the corsair had that turned me away from buying it.

You're not allowed to buy this one. And no, I am not kidding. I would rather you keep your money and your opinions to yourself. But, if you can't do that, and I am pretty sure you can't, then please, keep your money. You don't deserve this model. Thank you.

Nuff said.

I'm sorry for expressing my opinion and asking a question on a forum...

Seriously? You won't even answer a single question? I've been looking forward to a P-38 for a long long time. Guess I'll be waiting even longer by your request. :mixedsmi:

Peace out. :stop:

i hate to say it but the Kat has an point the mettle textures look like corroded Aluminum. its a white mettle that has a nice silver colour to it like the engine in my avatar when its new an polished. i know for a fact that it is not suppose to look like that im hopping those are just pre textures and not the real ones.

well - all that aside - I am a fan of all of the P-38 variants in any finish.

looking forward to it I am

..you gotta wonder about the most vehement cries for 'realism' either in simulated flight or simulated finish as this is not 'reality' but simulation ...

as Robin Williams once said..."what IS reality anyway?"

yes but there is an expected standard we all come to expect from something we pay for. im just stating they dont look right and im just trying to be helpful

Tough crowd here, but it always has been. Make a shiny aluminum plane and you’ll get complaints that it’s not dirty enough. Make it look dirty and you’ll get complaints that while it’s “dirty”, sort of, it’s not the right kind of dirty. Or it’s too dirty. Can’t win!

I think I get what Kiwikat is getting at, and I may even agree. Not sure yet. With such a great looking model, and with textures being replaceable, the “speckled”, or “corroded aluminum” look of these particular textures won’t keep me from buying the plane.

Looking good, KC!

Sir, based on your obvious 17 years of experience in WW2 planes, I am dying to know what you base that statement on. Have you ever seen a P-38 in person?

Here's what I know about aluminum...and I grew up with it. When it's polished it looks like this...

The Milviz version is painted. Is it really this hard to figure out?
I lost track of the number of sheet metal shards I pulled out of my feet when I was dumb enough to go thru the Garage bare feet when I was a kid...:icon_lol:

the only P-38s that were polished aluminum were the XP-38 prototype and the 13 YP-38's. When Lockheed started putting out unpainted P-38's (during the J production block) they were not polished and had a very dull finish. Some of the plain aluminum '38's in museums are too shiny.

Here's a photo of your's truly in front of a nice bare-metal unpolished aluminum P-38

Guys, as it is a render only at this point, there are no alpha channels to create reflection. I'm not part of the crew or anything, but I'm certain alpha channels are part of the textures when put into the sim. This is what all reflective textures resemble without alpha channels. When you combine the diffuse textures which you see present, with alpha channels, bump mapping, and specular maps, which can all only be seen within FSX, it should look positively spectacular. The metal work looks similar to that of the currently flying P-51D Twilight Tear, and P-51C Princess Elizabeth.

I really dig the great effort employed on the texture work and model work...definitely first rate job, keep it up! It is great to see another product being developed with "Happy Jack" Ilfrey markings besides!

See, that is the kind of response I was looking for from Colin. Not "I don't want your business". :running:

Thanks John

Various alloys are used in aircraft skins and all look different, and weather differently. Think of this as an artists interpretation of the aircraft, in bulk. If ya don't like it feel free to make your own. This is not a get rich quick scheme for these guys, any of them. There used to be a really weathered hulk of a p-38 behind the "terminal" at Port Hieden in the Alutians. Hopefully swervice examples looke a bit more spritely!

Certainly warbirds are not represenative examples of operational, or even new WWII era aircraft and should not be interpreted as such.

Cheers: T.

It must be hard to pour such a huge amount of effort and love into a model like this, and have someone's only response be to point out where they thought you failed. I mean c'mon, look at this thing! That's a gorgeous bit of modeling, coupled with some stunning textures. Maybe it's because I'm a modeler myself, but I realized immediately that these were 3D renders and not in-game shots, so I didn't worry myself about the specularity. That's driven by exporter settings and extra bitmaps that aren't going to be visible in a render like this.

Not down on you personally Kiwikat, just pointing out that modeling for this crowd requires a thick skin. It'd be nice to give a little :ernae: for the great work displayed before stampeding straight for the :173go1:. Nobody develops FS stuff for the money, it's almost all for love. It's nice to give a little of that back to your friendly neighborhood developer now and then.

I don't fly a lot of warbirds, but I've always had a soft spot for P-38's. This one is most definitely going in my hangar.
